When Disrespecting An NHL Captain Goes Too Far

#nhl #hockey #torontomapleleafs

In this video, we break down the biggest news of the NHL off-season & how the Tampa Bay Lightning seemingly ‘disrespected’ their long time captain Steven Stamkos. Let’s take a deeper look as to how this affects both teams on & off the ice…while potentially changing the way NHL teams construct their roster in the future.

  1. For me its the disrespect shown by announcing the Hedman contract right after Stammers Nashville contract is made public. Basically the same and it just feels like Tampa didnt want him

  2. Personally, I don't think it's as much about the fact that they didn't resign him as it about how they went about parting ways. The contract they offered was pretty insulting, but when you're MVP of sixteen years, the last ten of those with him in the captaincy, and you choose to not resign him AND maintain radio silence about all of this…that's a bit much. The fact that there was no video tribute, no tearful farewell from the Bolts, not even just a passing mention of how monumentally important he was to the team and it's coherency, not even mentioning how crucial he was to their last three cup runs? That to me speaks of not just poor player management, but also of an ignorant approach to public relations and the image they are presenting to the public and all of their future players.

Granted, maybe I'm too emotionally invested in this and I'm making mountains out of molehills, but my gut tells me that I'm not too far off from the truth.

  3. I wish the lightning could have worked something out with him. But have to look at the facts. He became a liability on the ice from a defensive standpoint. Take a look at the numbers when he was on the ice in five on five situations. His plus minus did not warrant a big contract unfortunately. I was brokenhearted as any Tampa fan at him not being there anymore. I will be still be rooting for him except when the preds play the lightning

  4. I understand everyone's feelings to lose one of our best players. But we have to face facts. The Tampa Bay lightning has absolutely no defense in front of the best goalie in the league. Although I don't agree with all the trades this GM has made. We cannot afford to pay $8 million a year to a player who is at the end of his career. We have to look forward sooner or later. The Tampa Bay lightning paid this man over 116 million in his career. At no time was he treated poorly or given any type of lack of respect. I cannot imagine that he is unhappy with the outcome. And lightening fans shouldn't be either. In the last 4 years the Tampa Bay lightning have won two Stanley cups. It is almost impossible to do that and yes he was a very big part of it but clearly the last two years he was minus 12 at the end of this season. The lowest player on the team. That is because we have no defense and that is what the general manager is trying to get fixed. He now has 8 million a year that he can put towards defense. It is time for the other superstars to step up keep our scoring respectable. And I think we should wish Stamkos nothing but luck. Except of course when he plays the lightning.

  5. how can you say that he was arguably tampas best player (10:50)? maybe you like him a lot but it is like you said evander kane is the best player in edmonton

  6. It is sensible to be ruthless when constructing a team. But once you win Cups, the calculation changes substantially. If you let go of a franchise cornerstone, and close friend of the remaining core, you’re asking for trouble. Hard to picture Tampa finishing stronger than they did this year without Stamkos.

  7. I don’t understand the anger lol 8×3 and 3×8 are the exact same amounts, he’ll be 37 after this contract and maybe retire, the lightning contract is team friendly, and keeps him paid until 42 with what I think is a much better chance at winning a cup in Tampa sure he may miss out on maybe a 1 year deal at like 4 mil but the guy makes more in sponsorship than he does from the team 😂

  8. im a die hard wings fan, but Stammer not a bolt no more? thats just crazy… When you think Tampa Bay Lightning… Its Stammer that first comes to mind… so what now?! huh??!

  9. I live in Tampa Bay and I've always believed the Tampa Bay Lightning's GM was basically a freaking Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz remember the line in the movie If I Only Had a Brain

  10. I am a huge stammer fan, (not a lightning fan at all) and I hope the preds win the cup next year while the lightning take a spot as a bottom feeder. Same to VGK

  11. So, you gonna talk about the insanity that is the Oilers hiring Stan Bowman of all people to be their GM? I feel like a video on that shouldn’t take 6 or 7 days to make (unless you’re on vacay, in which case, enjoy that as much as possible, we all need a break sometimes)

  12. That’s how it is in every single job. We are nothing but numbers. They take all they can from you and throw you away when they’ve emptied you.

  13. Im a Avs fan but post importantly a Hockey Fan. I keep up with both Florida Teams because our Family is back and forth from Florida to Maryland non stop because of Family down south. How Tampa’s Organization took care of Victor H but did Stammer so dirty, is head scratching and mind-blowing. Preds made some big moves to put themselves in good position to get out of the First Round of the Playoffs. I still dont think it’s going to lead to some Fairy Tale story for Nashville but they definitely should be a lot better and Tampa probably will take a step back.

  14. The Joshua/Lomberg combo? Why? Of those 39 combined points, Joshua scored 32 of them. Lol. Like, I get it's weird for Stammer to be offered less than 3rd liners. Just felt the comparison here was weird. Especially considering Stammer is 6 years older than Joshua. Whatever, just not sure why you felt the need to combine their numbers. Could have just said "Lomberg got 2mil for 7 points" and the point is made and isn't obscuring the stats.

  15. Honestly I was hoping he would have went to Detroit. Having stamkos, Kane and Raymond all on the same line. That line would be unstoppable

  16. There's been quite a few of these weird situations where mediocre-rated goaltenders go on crazy runs. Jim Carrey, Blaine Lacher, Patrick Lalime, etc. Then they fade into obscurity.

  17. Ive been a Lightning fan since innauguration day and this wasnt a surprise. We shipped St. Louis. We dumped Lecavalier. If Stamkos wanted to stay, he might have considered not airing the laundry on day one of camp. And again through the season. No player is bigger than the team, and this is a team that has always been ruthless when it's time to move a player on. That doesn't lend itself to fairytale endings, but it has lent itself to consistent success.

It's also incredibly amusing that all the "tut-tut" comments and videos are coming from outside. Like, disproportionately so.

  18. I'm a flyers fan and am embarrassed at how Bobby Clarke and some fans (not all, but most) treated lindros and his concussions. The guy always got targeted, never got calls from the refs because he was massive and could fight. His big flaw was he would always skate with his head down. But if he got the calls from refs that most superstars did back in the day, there's no doubt in my mind his career would've been way more remembered and there's a very strong chance he would've won a cup.

  19. SO Tampa just was like, hmmmmmmm who do we trade? THE FACE OF THE TEAM FOR 20 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Oh wow first video watch on this channel. Great video! And I love the idea, sports psychology Is truly fascinating. but especially hockey due to the stoic nature of the sport.
