Beau bennet? Seems like he could never stay healthy and never lived up to the 20th overall pick we took him at.

  2. slow_joke

Man there’s so many to choose from, but I’d say based on him being a top 10 pick, Pouliot is the best answer.

  3. OGSynergy37

Craig Hillier. Or if we wanna go wayyyy back, Gord Laxton & Steve Rexe

  4. shrapneldub

Pouliot over Forsberg is kinda crazy

It’s Pouliot. He was a much higher draft pedigree than Beau or Esposito. He was supposed to be the heir apparent to the recently departed Gonchar as a mobile left handed defender who can lead transitions at 5v5. Beau got hurt which sucks, but it became apparent like 5 shifts into Pouliot pro career he lacked the juice. Couple that with supposedly just not putting the work in down in Wilkes? Yeah it’s him.

I would go Dome or Pouliot, for different reasons.

Pouliot was a higher pick obviously, and his pedigree right up until he turned professional just screamed that he was gonna be a player in the NHL, so the fall off from the expectation was insane.

On the other hand, Pouliot at least managed to carve out a short career in the NHL, unremarkable though it may have been. Dome was a phantom … he was a wasted pick in the truest definition of that term.

Count me in for Pouliot, but it’s literally by a hair.

I feel like Kapanen should get an honorable mention, only because they ended up spending two 1st round picks on him…

    Angelo Esposito without question

  9. jbergman420

How is Letang a bigger draft steal than hall of famer Mark Recchi, who was drafted later. He’s not. The subreddit really struggles with recency bias.

Fleury most overrated? In all of Penguin’s history?

  11. Rook22Ti

    Another vote for DP.

Between him, Morrow, and Mike Johnston, I hate the Portland Winterhawks now.

  12. dave6687

Kapanen. Cost us TWO first round picks.

  13. resumethegloom

Pouliot, but shoutout to Joe Morrow

  14. xInfaRedd

    Tangradi.

Edit: Forgot they got him in the Kunitz trade.

  15. Supervisor3000

Get out of here with the MAF slander. I won’t stand for it!

  16. Kurt4012

Pouliot is the only answer. Man was he disappointing.

  17. Fit_Use9941

Idk man taking Crosby over Ryan Parent was probably a historic draft bust for this franchise

I like Stefan Bergkvist for this one.

First round pick in 1993, 26th overall. Played a grand total of 7bregular season and 4 playoff games with the Pens where he had 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points and 11 PIMs

He played a bit in IHL Cleveland before heading back to Europe for an unremarkable career

Lots of recency bias with Pouliot picks, but he’s been hanging around the NHL for a decade. I’m going with *Stefan Bergqvist*. 1st round defenseman picked in 93 that only ever played 7 NHL games over 2 seasons. He went back to Sweden after 3 seasons spent mostly in the minors and didn’t even have a great career there. He bounced around minor European leagues for his final 3 years and retired at 27 or 28 years old while failing to get games for a 4th tier Swedish club.

  20. Cultural_Reality6443

Craig Simpson 1985 2nd overall played 3 seasons put up 40ish points.

  21. kazzman74

I want to say Pouliot, but then there’s Konstantin Koltsov who was a 1st round pick that only lasted for 2 seasons

  22. The_1_Narrator

Best fighter/enforcer should replace best physical player

  23. capt_meowface

Alexander Daigle was supposed to be “the next Lemieux.”

  24. Milan Kraft has to be up there. Or Morozov when he wasn’t playing the Devils 😄

  25. LosManosFuertes

Beau Bennett comes to mind as a sleeper pick in this category.

  26. vferrito

Whoever is making this list is mental AF. Konstantin Koltsov worked his ahh off game in and out and was very young with his time in Pittsburgh. There were A LOT of worse players. I’m not even going to get into calling the 2nd Most Winning Goalie in History “overrated”. Like, what?

  27. HanTrollo710

Chris Joseph was a 5th overall pick and was pretty awful.

  28. LocalEmotional6109

stall, for second overall and becoming such a mid player, was a pretty big bust
