I hope I’m not eating my words but I think this has a chance to be a really great value contract as the cap goes up. According to puckpedia there is a 12 team no trade list but it doesn’t kick in until the last 2 years of his deal. Good deal IMO.

LFG!!! I’ll be honest, after the down year I wish we could have locked him up for 5-7 years at ~$5.7 million AAV, but I’m just glad he’s sticking around for a while. He’s definitely capable of being a $7mil star. He’s got to step up now and earn it. He has flashes of brilliance; but we need him to play with the confidence a man with his skill should be.

Honestly I’d be banging my head against the wall if we didn’t manage to lock up Beniers for 7 after handing out those contracts to Montour and especially Stephenson.
I think this was a smart move. He had a down year last year, but it’s really more the norm that even high drafts are a bit shaky their first few seasons. It’s always nice when they don’t, and are impact players from the jump and never regress, but that really isn’t how it usually goes.
There is some risk here, obviously. But the reality is that salary cap isn’t nearly as important. You can do things to fix salary cap. What you can’t really do is get another 2OA draft pick. If Beniers actually does end up being a bust, the team is a little bit boned anyway. Bridge deal might let you avoid the cap hit, but the salary room is kinda meaningless if you don’t have anyone worth paying.
I just don’t see a lot of downside here. We were already pretty bought in on the guy just by virtue of drafting him. Might as well lock him up now and at least have the potential of him being an excellent value in 4 years. And realistically speaking I really can’t see him not at least playing up to a middle-6 5mil/yr guy level anyway.

I wonder why 7 years, instead of 8? Unless I’m wrong, it’s longer than he needs to reach UFA status (I believe 5 years gets him to the 7 years he needs).

I guess I’m the only one not enthusiastic about Beniers. His precipitous drop off in his sophomore season brings into question his durability and the fact that he’s less than physically ready for this league.
Dude is 6’2″ but only 175lbs and teams quickly learned to just beat him up and he shrivels. Oleksiak was pretty much the only guy willing to drop gloves to protect him and it was disheartening to see Hakstol let his team get pushed around game after game. Kraken need an attitude like the Dallas Stars (see Jamie Benn) where you fuck with our talent you get a bare knuckle sandwich. I’m *not* a fan of NHL fights but there is a place for it and Beniers is the prime example.
He either needs to bulk up *or* we need to start protecting our skill players, which hopefully will come after dumping Hakstol’s soft coaching style.
TLDR; Beniers will continue his struggles unless he gets protection or he bulks up.
