JT was 3rd in goals scored last season, often on the 3rd line. He has another $11 Million coming this year. I can see the Leafs giving him 4 more years at $ 6 Million. BTW — Marner was sounding very "Maple Leaf Forever" yesterday as well. Looks like the Core 4 will last longer than the Fab 4 did.

The Leafs really blew the messaging here. This should always been stated as a “passing of the torch” and not stripping of the Captaincy. Austin is in his prime and the time is now, Tavares is the leader to show him the way. Tavares is a class act and I am gaining more respect for him as time goes on.
they should have made Matthews captain years ago, its always been his team. But i will say this, Johnny Toronto has been a great asset and if you look at his points accumulation in Toronto , its been above average at 433 points in 6 seasons.
If he signs 4X4 he’ll instantly be my favourite leafs player. Domi, Tavares (possibly) setting an example for Mitch.

I dont think its hate for JT, it's worry. With the likely hood of no Marner Trade and possible extention as well. Any deal for JT that doesn't bring much cap flexibility. Means more of the same for the foreseeable future.
And if there is flexability it's likely going to be eaten up with a Marner and likely Knies signing. And with all these players with NMC or M-NTC. Its hare to see where this team as currently constructed can get better.

The hate fir Tavares is his lack of offense in the playoffs.2 points in 7 games this year against the Bruins.I don't why he would be considered a great leader he's gone to the 2nd rd once in his career.

There's no hate for Tavares the player. But him coming to the Leafs when he did at a very team UNfriendly 11mil per season completely derailed the rebuild.

6 years at 4.5 million AAV….more years = lower cap hit.
If they sign Tavares a new contract be before camp probably a over pay at 6-8 million

Tavares is a great player, hopefully he re-signs at a decent cap hit and yea. No reason for him to go.
