I think this is something some people saw coming even if we didn’t want to acknowledge it with Vinik selling off pieces the past few years.
Looks like Vinik is staying on for at least a few years, so that’s good. I hope the new owner is as good as him, but I’ll be grateful for what he’s done for the team and the city either way.
Besides, can’t be worse than the Yakuza.

Nooooooooo

I like that it keeps Vinik in control for a few more years, but otherwise it’s hard to see how anyone could be a better owner for the team and the area than he was.

Good or bad?

Vinik is about to get PAID.
Good for him. New owner who wants their own cups let’s go!
Tremic
He bought the team for 170mil, and selling for 2 billion. Crazy smart guy
Wayf4rer
Honestly, can’t even be upset with it. Vinik bought the team and completely transformed it, he deserves to see a return on his investment and the investments he made into the community.
ACMop
On the bright side, someone spending $2B on a team is probably going to give a shit about it and it can’t be as bad as the pre-Vinik era
Basil_Normal
Glad Vinik is staying on for a few years, but we really need to hope and pray the new ownership group is good. Organizations with bad ownership have virtually zero chance of being successful

A billion more than the most recent sale???

I get it. But it still sucks. The golden years are coming to an end.
As soon as I heard about the divorce I figured this day was coming. At least, Vivik is sticking around for a few years.

Congrats Mr Vinik on cashing out, on the bright side we could’ve had worse news today like two RFAs being offer sheeted lol

I’m stunned as I and a group of hard core fans met with him shortly after his purchase. His story was this was his dream for decades to own a hockey team and the Bolts were his choice. SMH in disbelief that he’s throwing in the towel. Maybe in the end it was all about the money and the story he told us when we met as a group was not a true statement. Sad day for me but the memories will be forever. WallBangers forever.

I hate this offseason so much

I don’t know much about Ostrover the guy who is buying the team other than he’s a wall street guy. Which honestly can either be really good if he’s like vinik and wants to invest in the team and city or it can be like a stu sternberg and only be in it for profit and be really bad there’s really no inbetween.
I’m willing to give him time to settle in and see what his plan is down the road but its nice that vinik is sticking around for a few years.
ADrunkMexican
I hope he retains control of the team for the forseeable future. He’s definitely made his money back for sure.

Interesting.

I mean… This might be a bigger blow than the Stamkos news. Vinik is literally the reason the team and this city is where it is. I get it though… Buy low Sell High. The divorce probably didn’t help.
Happy Vinik will stick around but I hope the new owner doesn’t forget the community, start pinching pennies, and take away from the amazing organization the Lightning are.

Anyone got any information on the rumoured purchaser Doug Ostrover? There doesn’t seem to be much other than this one CTInsider article: https://www.ctinsider.com/business/article/douglas-ostrover-ct-forbes-billionaire-blue-owl-19405682.php
