Canada’s Eric Staal is helped off the ice by teammates Ryan O’Reilly (right) and Claude Giroux after being kneed by Sweden’s Alexander Edler during quarter-final game action Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the world hockey championship in Stockholm, Sweden.

Team Canada captain Eric Staal was injured Thursday in Stockholm during Canada’s quarterfinal match against Sweden at the world ice hockey championships.

At 15:52 of the first period of play, Sweden defenceman Alex Edler caught Staal with a knee-on-knee hit while Staal tried to corral a rebound on his backhand after his inital shot was blocked by netminder Jhonas Enroth.

After rolling on the ice in agony, the Canadian forward left the game with assistance.

Edler, who plays for the Vancouver Canucks, was dealt a five-minute major and a game misconduct after the infraction. He threw his stick in frustration as he left the ice.

The first period of the game concluded in a scoreless tie. Canada scored in the second frame to take a 1-0 lead.

Staal struggled to put weight on his right leg as he left the ice. No official announcement has yet been made regarding his status.

Staal, the only member of Canada’s 2010 Olympic squad at the event, has three assists in seven games played for Team Canada in the tournament.

  1. I'm from Canada and I'm not gay unlike you. The Swedes have always been better than you that's why they are 11-2 in gold lol

  2. Well in canada you are good only in ice hockey. By the way are you displeased because gay sweden win you `?

  3. too bad they spawn some of the greatest players that have every skated, shut up you racist plug

  4. Yeah and he deservs it. Im only a bit angry cuz they dont go by the rules when its a Canadian player doing something like this.
This is 3 games /watch?v=Ad8amQlXKa8 and edler got the whole WC and Olympics.. Fuck Canada and their damn reffs

  5. Well the canadians lost the game because of that hit so there's that. I'm not sure about Getzlaf's punishment but they don't really need him to win in the olympics, their team is that good.

  6. And you are sure that Staal whould save Canada in that game. So its ok to take out players from a team that wont win anyway? Canadian logics..

  7. Just to be clear, I'm finnish. Staal wouldn't have saved Canada in this game but if Getzlaf hadn't gotten that penalty then maybe they wouldn't have lost, not at least in that way since the face off wouldn't have been in their end.

  8. well anyways I still think its fucked up that Edler got this long suspension when Canadians gets 3 games for the same thing,
And I dont think that Edler is good enough to take a spot in the Olympic Team, But still. Hes chance got taken away from him

  9. Well he should have thought of that before he did what he did. And it's not ultimately up to the refs to decide how long the suspension is so there's that.

  10. No you are right my bad, Im not defending Edler at all he got what he deserves lets hope that they will judge equaly who ever does this kind of hits from now on…. there´s that.

  12. Actually they took 1 game away from the suspension, it was originally 5 games and he already sat out 2 games. So that makes 2 games in the olympics.

  13. Im just saying that canada doing everything to win so maybe it was not just the hit he cried for ….

  14. Check this shit up.. how many swedish player and other worlds players have they not SENDT to hospital!! Canada should not cry.. their.. no.. better

  15. Matt Dumba did a nasty knee-to-knee hit on purpose on Erik Karlsson today in an exhibition game between Sweden and Canada just before the U-20 World Championships. Edler got a 4 games ban if I'm right. It'll be interesting to see what the canadian gets…

  16. Its not about "crying" he deserves that penalty if u play hockey like me and it happen to u it hurts so fucking much
    (Im finnish)

  17. Its not about "crying" he deserves that penalty if u play hockey like me and it happen to u it hurts so fucking much
    (Im finnish)

  18. Had this been the reverse, all the canadians would say that it was a clean hit…
    Disgusting.
