Surprised Scott Laughton is still a Flyer? Is Danny Briere’s quiet offseason a good thing?

Scott Laughton was rumored to be on his way out since last summer, but with the draft in the rear view and the NHL offseason slowing down, the highlight of Laughton’s July has been a photo shoot with Gritty.

Will Laughton ever be traded? And after yesterday’s show discussing the disappointment of a quiet offseason, Charlie & Bill discuss the possibility that Danny Briere’s quiet offseason has so far avoided the big mistake.

  1. A good GM makes trade to upgrade the talent. Hextall, Fletcher and Briere have never made any major trade where we gave up a great player and still won the trade.

Here is an example of 2 trades Russ Farewell made during the early 90’s rebuilding:

#1 Farewell Traded Ron Sutter for Rod Brindamour. Ron Sutter was still a great player at the time but was 6 years older than Brindamour. So we got younger and Brindamour turned into a great 2C behind Lindros.

#2: Farewell traded Tocchet for Recchi. Tocchet was a 40 goal scorer at the time, but was 5 years older than Recchi. So we got younger and Recchi was 100 point player.

#3: Clarke then traded Recchi for Leclair and Desjardins. We all know how that trade turned out.

Briere is doing the exact thing Hextall did as they aren’t taking a chance and making a big trade. Konecny should be traded for a younger player just as Tocchet was moved in the early 90’s.

If we wait for draft picks to develop, then don’t build a team that is going to finish in the middle of the pack every year. That is what Hextall did and what Briere is doing.

  2. People today overlook that part of the reason they acquired Lindros was because they were in the planning stages for building what would become the Wells Fargo Center and they wanted a superstar on the team when it opened to help sell tickets. Much like what The Phillies did with Jim Thome 10 tears later. When the Flyers group broke ground on the building Forsberg hadn’t even played an NHL game yet.

  3. Laughton should have gotten the C but it would have given all the hockey media old heads an aneurism

  4. Really don’t see those kinds of trades anymore where star players switch teams. Now it’s maybe a star for a bunch of picks or whatever.

  5. The Flyers can't make a trade without another team participating. And since July 1, there have only been 9 trades across the NHL by just 15 teams, and only 1 trade included a 2nd round pick, with 0 1sts being traded.

  6. Have to cut Danny B some slack. 1 point out of missing ploffs, Foerster showed he has another level, Tippett on a new contract, Farabee do or die year. Can’t blame him for wanting to see the young guys one more full season.

  7. I'm glad they haven't made big moves yet. We don't know what we have yet in these young guys. Once the dead contracts & burden on the books is cleared, we'll know better who's staying & who's valuable, then we can spend wisely to get what we need. There's no rush. DB & Jones are playing this wisely.

  8. We keep putting so much emphasis on Michkov and his development, for good reason. But the team as a whole has to develope. There are talented players on this team, they need to continue to develope over the next few years as well, not just one player.

That's probably why they hold on to character guys who holds each other accountable and play above their talent level. And probably why they like Tort's coaching style.

This is a really pivotal year for this team, it's really exciting to see how they respond coming off last year's finish.

  9. Michov needs to get with team now start talking with teamates to get on same page sp they know how to think
What he expects so they can bond together

  10. Eric Lindros and those teams are why a lot of people my age are Flyers fans. That was a vert special time, and I personally wouldn't change it for the world!

  11. I think Laughton might be a good bottom 6 guy to keep around. He plays hard, not afraid to do the dirty work, and has skills. We'll have to see how it plays out.
