NJ Devils Trading For Yaroslav Askarov and/or Rutger McGroarty?

New Jersey Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald has had a busy Summer to this point. He finally acquired a legitimate goaltender in Jacob Markstrom and has made the 2024-25 NJ Devils HEAVIER, EDGIER, MORE VIOLENT!

Some fans have expressed disappointment that Fitz failed to land a Top 6 forward.

Some fans have expressed disappointment that our “goaltenders are old”, and have questioned who the future guy is.

In a recent Sportsnet article, Ryan Dixon talks about 2 names that appear to be on the trade market.

Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov of the Nashville Predators and forward Rutger McGroarty of the Winnipeg Jets.

Both of these guys are highly rated prospects looking to play in the NHL.

Could Askarov be the Devils goaltender of the future?

Could McGroarty fill a hole in the Devils Top 6?

I discuss all of this and more in this video.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. I’m pro Askarov. I don’t want Rutger. He’s going to be pricy. Plus I miss our speed identity. We need to get back to that team with grit. Rutger = no speed 😢

  2. Provided the price is Right, i'd be a Fan of going for Askarov, And seeing as NSH Is sorta going for a win Now mode with a Older team, Would it be potential we could do a Deal for Askarov that might involve Palat in the Trade? Reuniting him and Stamkos, seems like Could fit?

Askarov with Our future D Of hughes, Nemec, Silayev and Casey, Sounds pretty good (Which would make up our.. second Second Heaven >:D ) , and we have Marky for now who Can easily hold net for that while.

also Ace! i hope youre Okay out there, I hear the weather is CRAZY Hot.

  3. Brother Ace, I wouldn't read too much into trade rumors, they're mostly click bait this time of year. I think we've brought in enough new faces that chemistry is a question mark that we need a visual answer to before jumping on some hot commodity. You're 100% right about Daws. I think season after this upcoming one we'll see if he's ready for the spotlight. He didn't deserve to have the pressure that was dumped on him this year, especially when we just decided not to play defense. This may be a hot take but I think Noeson is capable of top six minutes even if we didn't pay him for it. I think Dawson had a sophomore slump last year and he'll be better this year I hope. I say we get a good read of what we got before we start looking at solutions to problems we don't have. Much love!

  4. id be ok with getting either or both but id personally never trade casey for mcgroarty. to much of a risk especially when casey could potentially be a piece for a win now player in the forward group at the deadline. if the devils do trade for askarov i think we will have a goalie log jam. i do think askarov is capable of contesting allen out for the backup role this season which is why i think we will have a log jam, but thats not a bad problem to have for the team as a whole. askarov is going to be a big time goalie. how big? well that depends on him. but i also dont want to forget about Yegorov either, the kid was the #1 rated goalie in this years draft for a reason. and he managed to get to that point on a team that was very bad defensively, meaning he carried his team often. so the kid has serious potential as well. so i think because of that askarov is more of a want over a need, but id still do it if i could just because askarov is 100% more proven than a player that was just drafted and itll create a good problem in net in the future if both live up to their potential.

  5. Fitz should try to ship Palat for Askarov . I know Palat’s contract is not attractive but Trotz has been very generous recently and the idea of having Palat and Stamkos reunited may be a catch .

  6. I think pursuing Askarov would be the smart play here. I wouldn't want to give up the farm for the kid, but Askarov shows a hell of a lot more potential to be a true franchise goalie who would have a spot to step in within a year and poised to take over sooner than later. I could see moving Casey and one of the goalies in the stockpile for him.
My concern with McGroarty isn't his playing skills or speed, but his attitude. He seems to be expecting to be thrust into a starting NHL job right away and not be seasoned in the AHL, and he's not THAT good of a prospect to have the leverage to demand going right to a starting top 6 job without earning it. I don't want to have a pain in the ass player in the roster like a Pierre-Luc Dubois that ends up being a headache rather than an asset to the team. I was into the idea of going after him at first but the more that gets revealed about his expectations and what his agent has put out there in terms of the kid's demands, the more I'm soured on risking that type of player being part of this club.
