Hextall was just a passive clown the whole time. He’d never have taken Michkov.

  2. Briere has a plan and is working it.

    Hextall never had a plan.

  3. & I’d argue not everything Hextall did was bad

remember when he got fired & had 20 million in cap space after cap hell because of Holmgren then Fletcher decided to go out & put us right back in the same position?

the difference now is we have patience & GOOD drafting

The writer on Twitter has such a hate boner for briere I had to block him

Just made they didn’t do anything this offseason. A team that was in a good place in the playoff doesn’t sell Sean Walker. If Risto didn’t get injured I’m sure he would have gotten traded.

Moving 32nd OA to a 2025 1st is not “baffling” as the 2025 draft is deeper and statistically will be in the 20’s than 32

The difference between hextalls depth with briers depth is that our depth is actually good. Laughton, Poeling, Hathaway, Seeler are all good depth players

Hell poeling is 25 years old. Bought low and found a good player

Selling roster players the only guy I would really want to see traded is TK. Everyone else I’m fine with keeping unless you have an opportunity to try for an elite player. Because the long term contracts in Coots and Sanhiem are probably unreadable. Farabee, Tippet, Frost, Cates, York, Drysdale, Zamula all young players. Why trade them now?

Him railing on drafting when he also admits drafts can’t be properly asses until years later is hilarious. Luchanko was rated like 20th by the media. Nothing like O’Brian. Laberge had concussion issues which was unfortunate. Rubstov couldn’t stick in the nhl. But no one drafted around him hit either.

Hextall overrode his scouts and took Patrick. Briere trusted his scouts and pick Luchanko

The flyers believe the problem around the Hextall era was development. They beefed up development. Briere has been the gm for 1 full season now. No Gm is perfect but Briere has done a good job

Unfortunately, Hextall’s micromanagement approach failed him miserably.

There’s a whole lot that I disagree with in that article, but I think something that gets missed when talking about this lackluster offseason is that none of the potential 1C’s moved.

Zegras, Rossi, Necas are still on their respective teams. I don’t know if they’re available, but if they are or become available (or another potential 1C does), Briere has 3 first round picks to help him facilitate a trade before next year’s draft.

This article is a disaster. If you are going to say “literally nothing” don’t follow it up with evidence of literally something.

u/flyersnstuff makes an excellent point. With those three players still on their respective teams, either they aren’t really for sale or 30 other GMs are doing “literally nothing.”

  8. LOL, Briere is on the job for a year and “ZOMG He’S jUsT lIkE HeCkStAlL!!111”

“other than a baffling swap from 32nd this season with Edmonton’s first in 2025”

First clue that this article is kinda poo-poo. Briere is taking a gamble (with no risk) in a DEEPER draft. Is it really that hard to understand?

Amazing article. I agree 100 percent. There is no aggressive rebuild, other than Michkov no top end talent and no reasonable prospect to obtain top end talent. We are a perpetual bubble team and Michkov isn’t going to change that.

I’m so tired of people trying to use Nolan Patrick as a way of justify the bad drafting arguments.

There’s no way to know the kid was gona get career altering concussions when he was ranked top 2 pick of the draft.

Lacklustre and vague comparisons, imo. I think a few sourced pieces of information would go a long way in strengthening the authors position.

Briere said they wouldn’t be active in FA this year and has stuck to it. The orgs plan is to spend next year when a lot of $$$ comes off the books. And even then, I don’t expect them to be big-game hunting unless there’s a FA that they think is a must have going forward (similar to Hathaway, but top 6). Danny acquired a third first rounder for next year, so the rebuild is still top priority here.

Hextall’s biggest knock against him was his refusal to cooperate with others (Clarke, Holmgren, Barber, etc) or to give them leads on what he was planning on doing. This was great for Hexy because it meant very little leaked from the organization at the time, but it was bad for Hexy because it alienated people in the organization that held higher positions and ultimately lead to his firing. I think the Patrick pick rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, even though the pick was deemed safe by most in the NHL, we know the scouts+ wanted Heiskanen.

Truth is, it’s too early to make this comparison in any meaningful way.
