The Calgary Flames continued their rebuild, not retooling by making another trade just ahead of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and heading into free agent frenzy by trading away forward Andrew Mangiapane to the Washington Capitals.
There was rumours and speculation that forward Andrew Mangiapane who will be entering in his final year of his current contract heading into the 2024-25 NHL Season might have indicated that he wasn’t going to re-sign with the Calgary Flames. Like what the current brass has done with general manager Craig Conroy at the helm has been trying to acquire assets for players who are expendable and may indicate that they won’t re-sign with the Calgary Flames when becoming an unrestricted free agent. Carrying a cap hit of $5.8M also made him expendable and this trade would potentially open up a spot to bring someone in via free agency or a current prospect filling a middle six forward role.

Not a bad return for someone who was originally drafted in the sixth round back in 2015 and this was a straight up no retained salary trade. Calgary Flames free up cap space and potential roster spot while the Washington Capitals still try to stay competitive while still having Alexander Ovechkin on the team and seeking the NHL Goals record.

It’s hard to see the team get dismantled but at the same time optimistic when you see some of the guys they drafted.
