Trouba can’t really block a trade

Based on Brooks’ article, fans are speculating that Trouba can block a trade to a team that isn’t on his no-trade list simply by telling them that he won’t report.

But that wouldn’t be enough to block a trade.

Here’s why: There’s 2 likely ways a Trouba trade could go down. 1. Cap dump in exchange for assets. 2. A legit trade with assets coming back to the Rangers.

In scenario 1, the team receiving Trouba doesn’t care if Trouba reports, if anything, they are better off. They just got free assets without any cap hit as Trouba’s contract will be terminated.

In scenario 2, the team receiving Trouba can trade a conditional 7th rounder that turns into a higher pick if Trouba (reports and) plays 5-10 games. If Trouba doesn’t report, it’s a lost 7th rounder. The Rangers can attach a 7th rounder going the other way to make it risk-free to the other team.

In each of these scenarios, both the Rangers and their trading partner will be happy. If there hasn’t been a trade yet, it’s likely because they haven’t found anyone interested in taking on his cap hit even in exchange for an asset, and nothing to do with Trouba reporting.

  1. correct, good analysis. if Trouba doesn’t report to the team, then he straight up won’t be paid and his cap hit won’t count toward the books (I’m pretty sure it won’t count towards the books, I don’t see how it would)

if I’m Drury I’m selling to buyers that they can basically get an asset for free because of this (alleged) empty threat from Trouba. of course the logical fear is that he actually *does* show up to play for this other team, because his brain starts working again and he realizes that actively walking away from $12m base salary for this would be very dumb

and if NYR doesn’t want to go down this route, there’s still waivers and they can save a little over $1m

but at the end of the day, it’s basically too late at this point. NYR has virtually missed out on all of free agency because of this crap. there’s still good players available (Roslovic, Caleb Jones, etc.) but they missed some nice fish who were *extremely* affordable (Lizotte, Sherwood, Brannstrom, Bryson, Motte, etc.).

so much for Drury being cutthroat

You are 90% correct. If the rangers are trading to a team that is looking for a cap dump that would work not because Trouba contract would be terminated. Because even in that scenario the receiving team still gets hit with a cap hit for whatever the rangers are not covering for his salary. Otherwise teams would dump players all the time. Thr issue is that Trouba has 15 teams he is willing to go to. How many of them are open to a cap dump??

there should be a fucking way to renegotiate contracts like in the NFL. I personally like Trouba and his game – especially as an our 3D – and if he were paid 5m or less, he’s here for the rest of his career.

It’s a frustrating situation because I know the Team wants him, Drury probably wants him, he wants to be here – it’s just the cap number. That’s all.

So maybe Detroit was a thing, but Trouba had them on his no trade list, so Drury needs to cook some more with his available options. Things are just getting started. There’s plenty of free agents left, and plenty of possibilitie. Rangers would need to replace Trouba with a decent defensman, or what’s even the point to move him right now.

Im curious what’s going to happen with Lindgren. It’s been really quiet.

It sounds like Drury asked for the list early (Prior to the draft). Rumors started about a trade to DET. Trouba released his 15 team list on July 1st (he didnt release it early as requested, which is his right to do). He likely added DET to the no trade list to block the trade

The more beliggerant Trouba acts the less I want him on the team. You are being paid millions of dollars to play a game, and you also fully knew what you were doing when you signed your contract. You can handle being away from your wife temporarily if need be.

I almost think in Drury’s mind that with how little you could get for the money at this point it’s not worth the hurt feelings. Haven’t seen anything indicating they’re still working the phones.

That is a lot to say on a subject that’s probably not true.

Detroit wanted a dman. They spoke with Rangers who were looking to trade Trouba and/or walk from Gus.

Rangers asked for his NTC list early to see if they could get it done. Most likely Detroit was on that list. So Detroit decides to just sign Gus.

    End of story imo.

  9. i just dont see how he can return next year. Will management not care if the captain gets booed every home game? maybe not, but who knows

Trouba has 8 million reasons to report if traded. I doubt he’ll give that up.

  11. Currently, there are 15 teams that have over $8 mill cap space. Probably every team is on his list.

The next team on the list is the Rangers with $6.8
