That leaves a big ol pay day for Matty then..let’s hope it’s long term and not a bridge.

This is exactly the time to lock up a guy like Matty – had a “down year” and the cap is going up?

Skinner? Not going for a winger who can score via trade, like Laine? This franchise is not serious about winning. Big reason why I didn’t renew my season tickets.

I think this years FA signings were far better than last years signings. In Ron we trust. Is it October yet?

really? Chandler Stephenson is the “big move” thats supposed to get us back to the playoffs?

Oof that’s not a good thing to hear

But what about the fact we need to clear up space in the cap? Wouldn’t players possibly being traded out be considered big moves?

I know that’s just our speculations, but I feel like we’re missing something….

I’m curious as to what the trade market is looking like. Based off of the limited information available, it seems that there are sky high asking prices on guys. Would have loved to see us make a move for Laine, Zegras, Necas, etc. seems very unlikely with how much we’ve spent, the cost of acquisition, and then what we would need to move to create the cap space. It feels like we are still a move short

Ron and company has done great work drafting and has been deft in trades…but his free agency acquisitions are eeeeaaaaagh.

Do I think the team has gotten better? Yes.

Do I think the team has gotten value for how much it’s better? No. I don’t believe these players are worth the 94 million dollars over 7 years for what they bring to the table. Especially when the biggest need has not been addressed and apparently will not be addressed: goal scoring.

So here is how Kraken currently look in terms of cap space:

9 forward and 6 defense 2 Goaltender under contract not counting Wright or Evans (~$10M cap remain)

    Wright and Evans total ~1.78M

$8,247,143 remain to re-sign Tolvy and Beniers.

That would be 21 rostered players.

TLDR: A trade or two needs to happen, especially if there is a possibility that some of the AHL regulars that got 1 way contracts will have a chance to make the NHL roster.

Unless there is a trade he is working on in the shadows for someone, this is pretty bad news.

Needing to massively improve on scoring, we give out a 7 X 6.25m contract to Stephenson whose highest goal total is 21, at the same position of our two premier draft picks in Wright/Beniers. Not even considering Gourde, who likely leaves deadline/after season. You’re basically telling one of your “face of the franchise” in Wright/Beniers, they are going to be playing 3C for the foreseeable future. Awful idea. I really don’t like this addition, for the team/fans sake. I hope I’m wrong and eat my words.

Moves the needle a bit more towards “maybe we should fire the GM too” camp for me, as someone who has been a fan of most of his moves.

Montour I kinda get. The Kraken have been one of the best teams defensively for the last 3 years, but that has come mostly from an entire team of “responsible two way players.” Having a great defense as a team doesn’t necessarily mean all your defensemen are great. If we were going to shuffle the forwards a bit in search of some more offense, you probably need fewer mistakes from the blue line as the help you get from the forwards diminishes a bit. Upgrade the blue line so you can be more aggressive up front — alright, I can see it.

The Stephenson contract has a pretty high WTF level for me though. That contract seems like it’s basically destined to be a disaster. I don’t think he’s a particularly bad player by any means, but holy overpay batman. His basic stats weren’t stellar, his analytics are worse. Analytics community seems basically unanimously down on this one, which is usually a bad sign because those guys love to argue. When I think about his immediate impact, I think it’s likely it doesn’t move the needle appreciably. When I think about where this guy is going to be when Beniers/Wright hit their prime, I think it’s almost a certainty that his contract hurts us.

It’s really hard for me to imagine this was the best move available. Hell, bringing Wennberg back would have been a better move than this. SJ got him at 2×5.
