Tanev is a 14 year veteran who turns 35 in December. Treliving had signed him to a 4 year deal in Calgary. ($4.5 Million x 4) Stay at home R Hand shot.

So im pretty sure theres a rule against signing him to an 8 year deal and wink wink having him retire. This deal wont be longer then 5 years.
What this allows them to do is get a head start on Tanev. They can send him the MLSE Jet give him the Shohei Ohtani treatment show him around the faciity and have a face to face with him before the crayness of free agency happens.
He can't sigh 8 years. He would have had to be with the Leafs last trade deadline to sign 8 years. Max 7 year contract allowed.
