Potential Free Agent Names the Wild Should Consider! #minnesotawild #nhl #mnwild

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we go Ballin on a Budget ahead of Free Agency starting on July 1st! We take a look at secondary free agents (not named Jake Guentzel, Steven Stamkos, Sam Reinhart or David Perron) that the Wild should consider if we operate under the parameters that they have to get somebody! We start with Adam Foegele, fresh off of his best season in the NHL and a solid contributor role with the Oilers. We look at where his statistics would have ranked on the Wild roster, and how he could provide some needed even strength scoring. We also discuss Daniel Sprong, David Perron’s teammate. We discuss other free agents such as Danton Heinien, as well as the physical play Dakota Joshua could provide. We finish with Chandler Stephenson as one name that can bring a bit of winning pedigree if the Wild want to go that option!

  1. I honestly hope Guerin does literally nothing in free agency. Every depth guy you add takes a spot from a rook. 2024 is an absolute throw away season so why add a Perry Kessell or Perron when you could give a rookie on-the-job training? If you're just looking for bodies to fill roster spots re-sign the slappies (Lettieri Luchina and Shaw) and stick them in Iowa until you need them when Zucc Hartman and Foligno sustain their annual injuries.
BUT, I sure Guerin will play pretend GM and make a move or 2 to make it look like he's doing his job. Wouldn't be surprised if he adds some kid from MN again to check that "one of us" box.

  2. While I agree with Travis on not adding an older player, if something that makes sense comes along within budget, then go for it. As a GM, your objective is to always improve the team. The Wild were 39-34-9 with a team that probably sustained the most injuries league-wide last year.
The Foegele option is interesting as he played all 82 games this season, same for Sprong, another good consideration. Heinen – being a center helps as any center can play wing but not any wing can play center. 17 goals for a million bucks, great value. Joshua would be another perfect fit, a bigger body, 18 goals sweet. Being +19 is also a strong indication he plays D. Stevenson is a little high priced for a -9 player pushing 30. Off your list, Joshua would be my pick…

  3. I don’t understand the Perron disdain. He’s a right handed scoring winger with decent size. The whole reason he is in the 1 year deal range is due to his age. A 1 year stop gap for the forward prospects to develop further. He seems like a perfect fit.

  4. Love your stats criterion, as arbitrary as it is. That said, do not spend more than 1M$ on FA. Save and keep it in the safe, we'll need it starting 25/26 season.
