  1. As a caps fan, I’m going to say that I think a coach like Carbury is more likely to get the most out of PLD than the likes of Torts, Bowness, or McLlelan could. That being said, this trade is either going to be great or absolutely horrendous for the caps, there will be no in between

  2. This is exactly where he needed to go: a team that is close to having to rebuild/re-tool with Ovi retiring soon. PLD should fit in a lot better with WSH. Hopefully the Kings can sign Byfield and Roy easily with the extra cap room then gun for a top 6 right handed shot like Marner/Necas/Stamkos (even if two of them are a stretch).

  3. I somewhat understood the trade initially but then giving PLD 8.5 for 8 years without playing a game yet was baffling. Now we can extend Byfield without worry. Thank you Washington šŸ™šŸ¼

  4. As a Caps fan I'm content with the move. Although I firmly believe that Kuemper will bounce back next season, you cannot be paying your backup goalie 5.25 million a season and I understand the desire to cut ties. The Caps had a big hole at top-line center, (ideally Dylan Strome should be a 2C). Dubois has a lot of term so there's certainty about his contract, (unlike someone like Ehlers, another player the Caps were targeting). Obviously, tons of risk for both sides, but I think that it's a move both teams needed to make and they were the only trade partners for one another who could swallow the contracts in play.

  5. There's a chance that this trade works out well for the Capitals, but most likely it's going to cripple their efforts to rebuild after Ovechkin and Carlson retire. Dubois has the upside to be a #1 Center, but he's probably not going to play that way. I would still prefer Strome to be the top line Center, and not Dubois. Although I have to admit that Ovechkin – Dubois – Wilson is a big and fast line. It would have two guys prone to being lazy on defense, though.

I don't think the Capitals will do this, but I think the best move for the Capitals and Dubois is to put him back at Left Wing, and put him next to another French Canadian in Hendrix Lapierre. The Capitals have plenty of depth at center, and they need wingers. The Capitals have plenty of top 6 or top 9 forwards, but they don't have anyone who belongs on the top line. Ovechkin, Strome, Dubois, and Wilson are all solid 2nd line players, but none are good enough to be a top line forward. Lapierre and Miroshnichenko are NHL ready prospects, but they look to be solid 2nd line players, and not top line players. Leonard and Cristall at least still look like they could be top line forwards, but they're still at least a year away from being NHL ready.

If the Capitals do want to use Dubois at Center, I think that means that they're trading their RFA McMichael, which is a bummer, or that they're trading Dowd, which makes sense because he's older and he has one year left on his contract. I thought that McMichael and Protas did better in the first half when they played together (and with Mantha) than they did after Mantha was traded and they were often separated. McMichael, Protas, Mantha was a solid second or third line. Dowd and Malenstyn played well together on the fourth line. The Capitals have fantastic depth at forward on their roster and at Hershey. They just don't have any top line caliber forwards.

The Capitals' main problem was not their 2nd through 4th lines. Their two main problems were their poor top line and their poor performance on their power play. Dubois has the potential to change that. But unless he surprises us, he won't play to his potential, and he'll give the Capitals more of what they have plenty of – solid second line caliber players.

The Capitals are paying Wilson and Dubois like they're top line players, but both guys are overpaid and are really more of a 2nd line player. At least Dubois is much younger than Wilson and has much more upside than Wilson. But both are under contract for a long time. Dubois does have the upside to be worth his contract, but it's hard to expect that out of him. Ovechkin is also overpaid now, but his contract is nearly up, and he wasn't overpaid for most of his contract.

I do like that Shepard will be given a chance to be a backup in the NHL. He's earned it.

  6. Honestly, I believe this will be a win-win. Both are players who can hokd up, they just need to step up.

  7. As a kings fan i am stoked, Blake took a big swing last year and it flopped but he got the team out of that contract. The cost to get PLD was a couple guys they wouldnt be able to afford and one they were ready to move on from, at least. Add the fact Vilardi needs to be wrapped in bubble wrap and has struggled with the injury bug. Hes great when he can go, cough Arvy Party cough, but when he can go is a question mark. I think under the kings Goaltending staff Keumper could find some form again. All in all im happy with this move. Good luck to PLD i hope he does become more than flashes of a good player.

  8. PLD is quite the playmaker from up in the nosebleeds. The only stretch passes he is capable of is the popcorn and beer from the Uber guy to his seat.

  9. LA still has one of the deepest talent pool in the NHL but they need to be smarter about their NHL roster. I know nobody can see the future, there's risks associated to any trades, but they aren't doing themselves any favours wiht their roster management.

  10. Kings fan here absolutely dancing for joy. I wanted no part of Dubois a year ago when it was rumoured Winnipeg would be trying to trade him. I don’t mind losing Iafallo, Vilardi, and Kupari so much, although this is bad asset management and FA evaluation by Kings management.

Cheers to Rob Blake: the cause of and solution to all of Los Angeles’ problems

  11. Capitals got 10 years younger and got the better player, Yes it’s 3 million more but the Caps easily won this trade

  12. It’s a huge gamble by the caps. PLD was so bad this year that it would be hard for him to replicate it and it does help that he’s got far less competition on the caps than he did in LA. At the end of the day though it all hinges on him and how he decides to approach the situation. Either turn things around or continue to be labelled as a guy who’s work ethic and attitude is cancerous. Time will tell.

  13. As a kings fan I hated when we acquired Dubois because my mind was, oh we just got an egotistical baby who is just going to walk to Montreal next season, I hated when they gave him that massive extension because Kopitar still looks like the #1 center with Byfield and Danault ahead of him in line for that spot, and I am glad we got rid of him because we got an upgrade in net and we haven’t paid a cent in that extension money yet. I know he said Kuemper was with us in 2017-18, but at that time we still had prime Quick in net (which was arguably his last good season in L.A.) and ended up getting traded halfway through because Jack Campbell was NHL ready.

  14. PLD jaw must of hit the floor, lacqluster career. Darcy is worthless , just a chump playing hockey for a living. L'A. might regret this move though if PLD decides its time to play as a team player/

  15. I was one of the few Kings fans who still believed in PLD; I still think the potential is there for him to be a top line center if he can put in the work and gets the support if the organization, so I'm sad to see him go, but if we were gonna deal him I think this was the best case scenario

  16. Trades are fun because everyone has such definite opinions on what is going to happen. More often than not wrong opinions. The only way to tell is wait 2-3 seasons.
The league is full of players who improved or revamped their careers after being traded….
