Lots of Theodore trade talk. Haven’t seen a mention of Hill

Like most of you I’ve been messing around on capfriendly recently before it goes under. Something I hadn’t considered in all my roster variations is potentially trading Hill

On one hand, it seems like Cassidy favors him. On the other, it seems like Thompson can replace him. We could find a 1.5-2 mil back up goalie, like Brossoit.

If we sign Doro to 1.5 and Korczac to .9 and trade Whitecloud to make room for Korczac, and Brisson makes the roster….we have 12 million to sign a back up goalie and only have a single roster spot to fill. That’s with Hutton on the roster as the 7th dman as well.

That might even be enough to sign Marchy, Stephenson, a back up goalie, and then Brisson is fighting for a roster spot. Or it’s enough to sign a back up goalie and go all out for a winger. They could even conserve for next year a bit so they have cap for Thompson, Hague, and Theo and still get a stud right wing.

Def an interesting idea I hadn’t considered until today.

What do you all think?

Thompson is mega ultra cheap, which is probably why they won’t move him.

I think many of us forget how badly Thompson dropped the ball in November/December/January.

Neither Hill nor Thompson are long term investments, that’s why Hill was signed for only 2 years and Thompson’s style does not complement our defensive structure when our defensive structure is good.

I have never liked Thompson, so I do have a bias.

I’ll also stand on this hill for a long long time. Theodore isn’t moving. He’s a crucial pin, and our defence, when he was injured, was significantly worse. You don’t trade Theo, and ever get something that can fill that gap. You also make another team, much much better. We have one of the strongest d corps in the league, you don’t sell one of those pieces because of a slight downturn in a year where everyone was bad. Save for the 32 year old who still isn’t worth the paycheque he’s going to ask for.

  2. That looks like some Washington Capitals propaganda site

I don’t know that we trade Hill. LT is streaky and when he is good he is great. BUT we have also had GK injury issues over the last few years so depth is crucial there right now.

LT is not fundamentally solid enough IMO. He gets out of position consistently, and being in position is super important in this defense

  5. I dont thibk there is any way we go into the season with Patera and one of Thompson/Hill.

Trading Hill is too risky IMO. It’s not like we have a defined #1 as much as we like to honk the horn for goalie depth. And who would want him after this last season. Yes he was good when healthy but he was out half the year. We wouldn’t get much from him. Better to wait another year to see if he can up his stock and either become a regular member of the team next year again or gain trade value. Right now we couldn’t get much from him and would likely lose more than we could gain. Just my measley two cents

I’ve read murmurs/hypotheticals of a trade involving Tommy and Theo for Marner, which makes sense for both teams even if I hate it. Theo is definitely a top pairing Dman that’s gonna want top pairing money after this year, and with Hanifin, we can’t really offer him that. Tommy is definitely a starter who’s gonna want starter money…also after this year. I’d prefer to keep Tommy over Hill due to the slight difference in age alone, but it’s clear Hill is the guy.

Theo’s my fav remaining Knight(obviously I love all the guys though), so it would hurt but it does make enough sense that I can see this becoming a thing. Best case scenario, maybe Marchy gets a team friendly year extension with us, and Marner will be his replacement going forward? Not gonna try to do the math on something like this but between Theo and Marchessault’s contacts being off the books, Marner’s inevitably huge extension would probably just barely fit.

With both goalies having one year left on their respective contracts, I can’t really see them moving either one of them.
