One year deal… Feels like the last chance to establish himself.
Whitecastle56
Not bad, if he improves it’s a steal. If stagnates then it’s a very fair contract for a middle-bottom 6 wing. Does feel like both side expect for it to be a show up or get out year in 24-25 though.
DryProgress4393
Fair potential bridge deal. Either it works this season or he’s out the door.
Hungry_Stoic
Don’t hate this. Affordable cap hit and ability to flip with team control if needed.
memeaste
If traded, it would be a deadline deal. It’s a light contract and is moveable for sure
TransientDreamer
So he either elevates his game next season or he’s out the door at the trade deadline?
PaulSach
Signed for his qualifying offer. He wasn’t getting anything better than that.
Ketchupboi
Love it and glad to have him back.
Zero-jiggler
Very nice. People are so hung up on what he was supposed to be that they disregard what he is. Absolutely worth keeping around for cheap.
TinyExit37
Let’s Go that’s a good deal, low risk. Give him another chance with hopefully more power play time this year.
njerejeje
Curious what this means for Othmann. I doubt they want to make Kakko or Othmann RW1 full time, but there’s only one RW3 spot for them.
I suppose they could do
Kreider-Zib-FA RW1
Panarin-Trocheck-Laf
Othmann-Chytil-Kakko
And cuylle to the 4th line I guess?
DrAnklePumps
Glad the Rangers didn’t offer him a penny above his qualifying offer and that Kakko didn’t demand anything above that either.

Side note. I immediately went to CapFriendly to see how this impacts our situation and got sad remembering I wouldn’t be able to do that next year. Fuck the Capitals.
woodysweats
He’s getting traded at the deadline
MikeyLikeyPhish
2.4m for a 20 point player. Yay

Love everybody hating on this deal… So stupid man. Not even “fans”
SmokyMetal060
Eh. A deadline trade is still possible. We’ll see if he steps it up in the first half of the season.
BillyFever
Great deal. If this is the year he finally discovers a scoring touch it’s a bargain, if he plays exactly like he did last season it’s decent value for bottom 6 winger who is great at defense and maintaining possession in the offensive zone but limited on offense, and if the Rangers end up including him in a package to bring in a genuine 1 RW it’s a team-friendly deal that most other teams wouldn’t have trouble fitting under their cap.
thepiombino
I’ll bet the house he gets moved at the trade deadline.
fauxrealistic
Glad to see this. I think he is close if he gets put with the right people. Love his ability to control the puck in the offensive zone.
09-24-11
Great deal for both.
He’s at the point where he needs to be assessed at his salary cap and not his draft position. Not sure why some people are seeing this as the final chapter here.
metsurf
prove it deal perfectly ok. Could still move him at the deadline next year if it comes to that.
mookerific
Shit.
GuaranteeLoose4494
Would rather have ohtman up
ericonly
now he’s more attractive in trade. Teams know what their getting rather than having to negotiate. trade him at the draft, please.
WorkoutMan885
Too slow Vince, Brooks already reported before you, but you knew that already
Informal_Abies_9310
I think this is a deal to make a deal pre-draft or at the draft. This way the team that is taking Kakko knows exactly what he is getting paid. There is no need for negotiations or worrying about how much he wants. 2.4 x 1 year….. very low risk …high potential reward. And the team will still have arbitration rights for him the following season.
They are going to move him.
Maybe I am giving Drury to much credit, but Kakko and Trouba in a trade just to clear some cap space. Having a team eat 8 million for the next 2 years has cost something. Either picks or somebody like Kakko.
Freeing up that 8 million opens up the free agent market for Drury. We go from having only 12 million to sign 6 players…to having 20 million to sign 7 players.
Losing Kakko is going to suck, and likely will come back to haunt us. But we don’t have any more picks to just toss out the window to get rid of a bad contract. And to get a team to eat that 8 million it has to cost something. And I am sure Drury feels this team is right there so he doesn’t want to wait for Kakko to figure it out and he has to get better on the backend to compete with Tampa and Florida.
I could be completely wrong. But why I feel this way is why sign Kakko now? Last year Laf didn’t sign til the end of the summer. If we want to keep Kakko, we control him, and no one is going to offer sheet a 20 point winger. So why sign him now before we reached July 1st? If you are a little short on money after July 1st…you can always just low ball Kakko, Schneider, and Lindgren. And in a sense of priorities of who I would want to sign first Kakko is definitely not the #1 on this list.
This is a deal to make a deal.
BigBadBob113
Wow, it’s a nice deal
Yankees2860
This is the prove it deal.
FoghornLeghorn999
Worst case scenario is having a really good third liner for the price of a third liner.
No reason to dislike this.
guyzieman
Can’t wait for everyone to be wondering why he’s barely getting ice time in March when he’s got 6 goals and 12 assists in 60 games.
dumberthenhelooks
It’s a good deal for him and the team. It’s just give both cost certainty without having to worry about it. No option is off the table but it’s a fixed cost and term
rman18
2.4 – I wonder if he has a good season it goes to 5 years/24 mill?

Trouba is easily replaced as far as production is concerned. Yeah it will be hard to replace his intangibles like his block shots and bone crushing hits. But as a defender he has become a complete liability. Not going into this just look at this [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/rangers/comments/1degoek/comment/l8cqbl3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) if you want to dive into it. Plenty of free agent defensemen that produce at Trouba’s level for way less.
