FIX THE DEFENSE
Getting Ullmark would make you playoff contenders . People who mock Ullmark and say it was Boston are wrong . Ullmark was amazing in Buffalo and Boston. He was also better than swayman after the trade deadline. Unfortunately swayman got hot
So I mean the better question is, and the Rangers are going to have to deal with this shortly with Shesterkin. What makes more sense? Spending 12m on two goalies like what Boston might be doing. Or spending 12m on one goalie like they are probably going to have to do. As I see 5 for Ullmark, and 7 for Swayman isn't a problem. The problem is if Swayman wants to be paid as a top 5 active goalie. If he thinks he deserves 8+ then it gets harder to justify. Frankly if he wants 8+ it's not Ullmark I'd be looking to move. You don't pay a guy as a top 5 goalie when he hasn't won anything.
As far as last year Swayman wanted 4.8m for 5 years the Bruins wanted a show me contract of 2 years 2m. It went to arbitration and the settlement was 3.475 and since Swayman brought it to Arbitration they had the option of 1 or 2 years. They allowed Swayman to choose. Why I have no idea. But yeah that's why you are doing this again already. He's still an RFA he still has arbitration rights but the Bruins only are obligated to give him a 10% raise. It very well might go to arbitration again and I think Swayman would be unhappy again because I think the arbitration award would only likely be 6m. Oettinger only making 4 hurts him. His team mate Ullmark only making 5 hurts him. It's pretty hard to justify him making way way more than those guys. So the Bruins could force it and they wouldn't have to honor him wanting 1 year. They could force it to be 2. That's an option. I don't think anyone wants that option but it's an option.
Ullmark right now is a huge boon to Boston in negotiating with Swayman. If you trade Ullmark then the team doesn't have that leverage. You cannot trade Ullmark until the Swayman deal is done if you don't want that situation to go sideways. Imagine you trade Ullmark and then you still can't get a deal done with Swayman. It goes to arbitration and he's bitter about it. Now you don't have any long term solutions and Swayman might choose to walk.
Think Boston is playing on thin ice to trust swayman because A) he wants big money now B) he has never played one full season yet
To be honest I think New Jersey will get LU. If the reports are true that New Jersey is willing to trade the 9th overall pick for a goalie. I think a Boston trade makes a lot of sense. Boston is an aging team so they get a great young prospect and they make cap room to give JS a big pay day. New Jersey gets an amazing goalie in LU. It’s a win, win trade imo.
Seeing as they just gave you a first and forth in the last trade for a rental. My guess is it would cost a ton.
I don’t think Ullmark is THAT great of a goalie- granted he is better than what we currently have. He is playing good with that level of defense in front of him AND a healthy competition with Swayman. IE- look back at Ned with Carolina. Exact same situation- great looking goalie, good defense. Goes to new team and barely stops a beach ball. Look back at Ullmark when he was in Buffalo, he was not any better than our current goalies.
