Saw this proposed trade on The Hockey Writers when I was looking for any trade rumors and thought it was an interesting idea.
Calgary Flames receive:
- RW, Martin Necas (RFA rights)
- C, Jesperi Kotkaniemi (six years left, $4.82 million AAV)
- 2024 2nd Round Pick (Carolina)
- 2025 4th Round Pick (Carolina)
Carolina Hurricanes receive:
- G, Jacob Markstrom (two years left, $6 million AAV)
- LW/RW, Andrew Mangiapane (one year left, $5.8 million AAV)
- 2024 2nd Round Pick (via Dallas Stars)
- 2025 Conditional 3rd Round Pick (Calgary)
Deal or no deal? I would say deal if Markstrom were a couple years younger. I'm just not sure if trading for a goaltender the same age as the one we need to trade is the best idea. Maybe it can be a stopgap move until there's better options? I definitely prefer sending Necas to the west instead of Boston or Philly, it's just Markstrom's age and my opinion of him being a bit overrated that make me apprehensive.

Why not just send Aho and Jarvis as well since the scale is already broken in the Flames favor.

If we don’t get someone like Sharangovich included at minimum this is awful.
Neither of their goalies are a need or that great, unless we get Markstrom to flip to NJ for like Dawson Mercer or something which would never happen.

As said before. Markstrom is the same age as Fred and isn’t really an upgrade. Yes we get out of the KK contract but to me it seems like bringing in another older goalie and a downgraded winger. Personally don’t see the value in this one.
Maybe if we got Weegar back in this deal even if we had to add another pick. Otherwise doesn’t make any sense for us

yes lets trade our 50 point forward and a guy on an off year for a 40 point forward and a goalie that’s 3 months younger than our current “probably retiring soon” goalie but has a .027 lower save, all so we can move back in the draft.
The more of these trades I see the more I want to resign Necas

So we get a goalie who is a mild at best upgrade over what we already have who is old and not that good. We got a small, undersized, forward who is older, overpaid, has scored over 20 goals exactly once in his career and has never come close to scoring as much as Necas has in a year, we drop down 2 spots in the 2nd round as well?
What an absolute joke of a trade idea. That fact that we are even giving this post any publicity is insane to me.
