1) Igor is not going to get $12 million. This is the opening salvo in negotiations. The number will come down.
2) He *will* get over $10 million. But that’s manageable because by the time his next contract kicks in, the cap is gonna be $90-92 million. And it will continue to rise, unlike the last four years.

no goalie in this league is worth 12 million
DannysFavorite945
That’s not a tenable salary the Rangers should pay.
RolandJoints
12 is too much. Highest currently is Price at 10.5. He may get 11 but any more than that is way too much.
KorbanDallas90
Good. Maybe we can build a team that isn’t reliant on a goalie.
PrestigiousFlan1091
Adin Hill, Darcy Keumper, Matt Murray, Corey Crawford, Stanley Cup winning goalies. Probably together they didn’t make $12 million. 🤣
Beelzebub_86
Igor can be the best goalie in the league, but you’re not winning the Cup with a 12 million dollar goalie. He needs to keep it under 10 or we’re done.
Key-Tip-7521
How reliable is this guy?
Ok_Pace_9703
That’s only like 1.5 Jacob Trouba’s we’ll be fine
CapriciousnArbitrary
Love Igor, he is very talented but this is a salary cap league where you need to score goals to win. One year left in the window of him being on a reasonable contract.

Is this really all because Mollie Walker got bored and wrote an article where she speculated he *could* ask for 12m annually? I’ve seen exactly zero proof he (or his agent) even hinted at that figure and as far as I can tell this is just the media feeding into it’s own bullshit because we live in a 24 hour news cycle hellscape.
RhythmTimeDivision
Brodeur (and Stevens) gave reasonable hometown discounts and cemented a legacy with three Cups. If Igor plays hard ball for $12M long term, Drury (or whoever sits in that chair) would be lucky to assemble 1 Cup winner. There just won’t be enough cap left.
Helpful_Project_8436
If he is sticking to that, trade him at the draft for a haul. After his playoffs, his value must be through the roof right now. I sit him down before the draft and ask him what he wants and if he doesn’t budge, he’s gone. You can’t pay a goalie 10-11-12 million in a salary cap world. It’s impossible

Igor should go get his money and the Rangers should do what 99% of championship teams do and focus on building a good team in front of the net first… or they could just keep doing the same thing over and over again and wasting goaltenders’ careers by not winning anything

He is the elephant in the room.
He is amazing. But amazing didn’t get us past Florida. Amazing didn’t get us past the Devils. Amazing didn’t get us past Tampa.
Guess what? Aidan Hill, Skinner, Darcy Kuemper, Binnington etc… are showing this old adage of your need great goaltending for the playoffs a fallacy. You need good goaltending getting hot.
12m on that position we would have $50m on just 5 players.
Roster suicide. Something has to give or better yet, go.

I think it’s very dumb to listen to nobodies on Twitter who say things without anything backing it up other than “there’s reason to believe…”. If it’s as simple as that, then there’s reason to believe that Igor wants to take a team friendly deal leaving millions on the table so that the team can have the cap space to bring in players to help him win what he really wants, which is the Cup. See? That’s how easy it is to make up nonsense.
superdad0206
Igor’s 28? So he’ll be entering his age 30 season when he hits UFA? Maybe the trade-off is longer term for a lower AAV on order to accommodate the cap hit. Or shorter term with higher AAV, but similar overall TCV in either case.
And then someone else can pay him for his twilight years.
Do 30 year old goalies make maximum bank?
Rangerboy030
I love Igor, but paying big money for elite goaltending is fool’s gold. You don’t need elite goaltending to win if your team is built properly, you only need “good enough”. Elite goaltending is only worth it if you’re getting it cheap.
Stuart Skinner is the starting goalie of a Stanley Cup finalist this year, Vegas won it all with Aiden Hill as their starter. The only goalie on a big contract that has won the cup in the last decade is Vasilevsky.
jacklong555
When the new cap kicks in, this is roughly the same percentage of the total cap hit as Hank was. We also never won a cup with Hank. Take that as you will
Wingnutt02
If he wants 12 mil a year, it was fun, pal. ✌️
PeteyG89
4 million can be saved with a Trouba buyout just sayin

Best I can do is 15
Mr-Dicklesworth
I love him, but they should trade him next year and ride Quick. He’s definitely walking in FA with how dogshit the team around him has been; and they could actually get a legit superstar talent for him straight up without having to attach any good roster players
nyr00nyg
Well we have him now on the cheap and can’t win, so it’s whatever. We lose either way

👏👏👏 You deserve that and more, Igor.
