For all the paywall complainers: use reader view (if you have an iPhone) and you can still read the article despite the paywall

Man these are all terrible except the Vegas deals lol. This particular St. Louis one is especially bad my goodness, I’m convinced that a delusional Blues fan came up with it. Marner, Knies, Woll, Benoit, 2024 first-round pick to St. Louis for Binnington, Kyrou, 2024 second-round pick. You’re giving up the best player in the deal, a young forward who plays a style of hockey that’s lacking on the team. An inexperienced but good goalie who’s shown he can steal playoff games, Benoit who was damn good as a physical bottom pairing d-man and is in his mid twenties himself. On top of all that you give up a first rounder this year as well… if the Leafs made a trade like that I would want Treliving fired immediately

  4. The trades:

    1) Toronto trades Marner to Anaheim for Cam Fowler (50% retained), Ryan Strome (50% retained), 2024 first-round pick (Oilers pick) — Tommy M.

Toronto trades Marner to Anaheim for John Gibson and Trevor Zegras — Jonathan C.

    2) Three-team trade:

    L.A. to Toronto: Drew Doughty
    Toronto to Pittsburgh: Marner
Pittsburgh to LA: Tristan Jarry & Jack St. Ivany

    3) TOR trades: Marner, Knies, Woll, Benoit, 2024 first-round pick to St. Louis for Binnington, Kyrou, 2024 second-round pick.
The Leafs get a cost-controlled goal scorer and former Stanley Cup champion goalie while the Blues get a Selke Trophy candidate with a few promising prospects.

    4) Markstrom and Andersson to the Leafs for Marner, then Calgary flips Marner to Utah with Kadri for two firsts and three seconds.

    5) Toronto trades Marner to Vegas for Shea Theodore and William Karlsson

Marner to Vegas for Shea Theodore and Brendan Brisson

Marner to Vegas for Theodore straight up and Toronto retains 50%. They might even have to throw in a pick.

    6) Marner to Detroit for Lucas Raymond

    7) Chicago trades Seth Jones to Toronto for Marner

    8) Toronto sends Marner to New Jersey for Dougie Hamilton

    9) Marner to Minnesota for Marcus Foligno, Ryan Hartman and pick No. 13 in 2024

    10) Toronto trades Marner and Timothy Liljegren to Philadelphia for Travis Konecny, Rasmus Ristolainen, 2024 1st (from FLA), 2025 2nd (from ANA)

Toronto trades Marner and a 2024 5th round pick to Philadelphia for Travis Sanheim, Joel Farabee, 2024 2nd round pick, 2025 2nd round pick

JFC. Kids – I’m not saying don’t do drugs….but don’t do THESE kind of drugs.

  6. Can I just say that the Athletic has certainly devolved down from quality paywalled journalism to paywalled clickbait? I am constantly frustrated–at least when it comes to hockey coverage.

  7. The title is misleading. This is a mailbag of trades proposed by readers, and the Athletic shot down basically all but 1 of them.

  8. MatthewsSnipes

    These are mostly atrocious.

If Marner goes to Anaheim I’m pushing hard for Mintyukov.

  9. JFMoldau

Only the Calgary trade doesn’t make me want to barf.

  10. Gear4Vegito

I don’t mind the Vegas & Flames deals as least as a starting framework.

  11. JRocleafs

Since when did the athletic stray so far away from stats and analytics. Marner should be their darling not the second piece in a trade

  12. FlapjackFiddle

oh my fucking god I’m mortified at these

  13. mking098

I only read the first 5 or 6 before I stopped as they were all terrible.

  14. ksurf619

Idk what everyone is surprised about, it’s not like other GM’s don’t have eyes. They see the same bs we see every year.

Who cares if the haul is bad. The whole point of dealing marner is it’s addition by subtraction. The opportunity cost is him being gone, cap space being freed up, and hopefully, key word hopefully, being invested intelligently elsewhere to get this roster closer to a cup.

  15. BiitchenKitchen

I read the post when he called for trade requests, not sure if he intentionally left off the half decent ones in favor for the unrealistic troll shit but surprised these 3 didnt make the cut for the article

Marner to Seattle for Wright, Larsson, Seattles 2nd (pick 40) and a 2nd next year

Marner to Anaheim for Zegras, Zellwegar and a 2nd (pick 35)

Marner and Lilly for Saros, Evangalista, L’Heuriux and the later 1st of Nash/Tampa

  16. baylaust

I know the term going around is that “the Leafs aren’t going to “win” a Marner trade,” and look, I get that. The idea is the open cap space to allow the Leafs more flexibility in future moves, and they probably won’t get someone that will fill the hole that Marner leaves in playmaking. I really understand that.

    These trades? *Holy shit.*

  17. Quick599

It’s going to be Marner for Zegras, a defenseman prospect and a pick.

  18. JoeRoganHair

Surprised they didn’t ask Leafs front office to bend over in these trades.

  19. Big_Albatross_3050

Writers when the Leafs want a decent – good player via trade who’s maybe a 20 goal 60 point guy : So the starting point is obviously all their best prospects + multiple 1st rounders + extra sweetners I don’t care if the going rate is like a 2nd.

Writers when the Leafs are trading a legitimate superstar: Leafs will take a 6th and a journeyman and like it. Marner is a complete bum, who gives a shit if this guy is good for 30 goals and at least 90 points with a very very good shot at 100, it’s the Leafs and they don’t deserve even a 1st for him.

This is why I can’t take these “writers” seriously. Those mouthbreathers probably chew with their mouths open.

  20. JamesCurtis24

I think the problem a lot of people have IMO is getting fixated on the Marner trade being the “final move.”

Now, obviously you’d need somewhat of a hand-shake deal in place to do something like this, but if team X has the D, goalie, whoever you want. And they say we want prospect quality Y and 2 1sts. Well if there’s a team that will give you 2 1sts and prospect Y for Marner, then you can make the Marner trade and flip the assets to get what you wanted else where.

I don’t at all hate the idea of trading Marner for the cap space and draft/prospect capital WITH the full understanding that you’re immediately flipping all, or some of those assets to target players.

What if doing that allows you to go sign Brandon Montour, and then you flip the picks and prospects for another really good, young, cost controlled players. And maybe you still keep some assets in the holster for the deadline.

I’m sure Tre, assuming Marner is willing to be traded, is gathering the offers from all interested teams, gathering info on what it would take to acquire the players they want to fill the gap, and can execute the move from there.

Get creative, stop having tunnel vision on finding the perfect single trade that just magically gets you all the pieces you could desire for Marner. If that trade does exist, of course, pursue it. But there are multiple ways to get from point A to B.

  21. ChesterButternuts

I for one would never trade for 10 ply.

  22. nanapancakethusiast

As a full-time Sharks fan and a bandwagon Leafs fan, please for the love of god do not send Marner to Vegas. Please. I’m begging.

  23. Sure-Sport7803

We shouldn’t be shopping our 2nd best player. Sorry we aren’t getting anything worth a trade. Keep him. He will continue to get us to playoffs.
