If that was Trig not Chief I'd say it's a trade discussion. Fact that its the coach it's about how they move forward.
1) Hi coach, I'm Mitch, I have been involved in 1/3 of all your teams goals for the last three years.
2) BTW, there is zero difference between JT and Mitch. Both have 1 year left on a NO TRADE contract.
3) There are only 10 NHL teams that have a player (s) making $10 Million or more. It is a discount Professional league don't forget.
Speculation, that's all it is…Marner holds the cards and if he says no to a trade, then at least The Leafs can count on his 90 points to get into the playoffs. This scenario would not surprise me.
Hopefully after meeting his new coach, Marner realized that being soft in a country club atmosphere is over. Maybe then he will accept a trade or play harder.
Can't build a team with 3-4 guys making as much as they do. I like Marner but once they signed Nylander to $11.5M, they basically made their decision to move on from Mitch.
Core 4 could’ve worked if Dumass had drafted for need, respected the goalie position, experienced coaching and, not traded away prospects (Marchment, Brasseau et al) to further his skill fetish.
It wouldn’t have been easy but it was possible.

There is no making Marner a more gritty playoff player. That’s not his wheelhouse. Child playing with men physically

You cant sign Marner to another contract and keep him i would rather let him walk and have the cap space for a stud defenseman. So letting him walk if you cant trade him is the only other option in my opinion
My 2 cents. They are not going to get rid of Marner. Regardless of the fan outrage, Marner is not the reason the leafs went out in the first round. If you think he is so bad, why are teams lining up to get him? Easy answer he is a playmaker and a driver for the leafs. Came back and played injured because Pappy was sick Willy was sick . If he was a UFA for another team the leafs would be in on trying to get him. The team wins and loses as a team, no one player causes that.
Watching Tavares play for Canada and seeing his skill and drive, he also should be a keeper. What the leafs need to do is sign Marner and JT to extensions and get cracking on new contracts for Bertuzzi and Domi. We need one goalie to play with Woll and have a good look at the defense corp.
The change in coaches was an unfortunate necessity but Berube may bring the needed aggressive grit to the players already here.
We are not that far out of real contention with the right tweaks and a small adjustment to the defensive style.
Trade marner going to cost to much ,doesn't suit the style berube wants crash and bank can get 3 forwards the money marner wants

Why isn't any one talking about, how you can expect to WIN in the playoffs, when two of your top players decide to take 2-3 days off during your playoff run, but lets bad mouth the two other top players for showing up for all 7 games, but have nothing for the other two that didn't show up????? TRADE THEM!
I love how Darius said that Marner is worth a lot more than leafs fans or other fans think. I’ve seen some absolute delusional trade proposals for Marner that are WAYYY undervalued for what he is. There about 5-10 maximum, consistent 90-100 point players in the league and Marner is one of them. Believe it, if Marner waives his no move clause he will be the most sought after player this off season. Above Reinhart and stamkos.
