Which Potential Free Agents Should the New York Islanders Bring Back and Who Should Be Let Go?

The New York Islanders must decide which potential free agents to re-sign and which they should let go. We break down all the restricted and unrestricted free agents who played for the team this season and discuss what the team should do and what Lou Lamoriello is likely to do and they are not always the same thing.

Plus we continue our player by player look at the Isles roster with Pierre Engvall. How did he do this past season and what is his likely future role with the team next season.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Say NO to isle ufa's. All are useless. GO BIG fish ufa hunting-a louzer specialty. Trust Louzer. He is gonna get a big fish ufa. Look at the forward list-stamkos, lindholm, petterson, pavelski, marchesseult, kane, vt, guentzal, reinhart. Plus guys who could be moved thru trade-marner, eihlers, laine, zegras, necas. Even a guy with baggage pld and a famous judas could be had too. Isles biggest need with a plethera of forwards available could be had for cap $$$'s or creative trading. GO get 'em louzer. GO get that BIG FISH forward. HAHAHAHA we'll be sitting there on july 2 wondering wtf is louzer doing once again as players fly all over the place not surprized by the usual louzer inactivity as he signs one or two day 2 menial cheap ass ufa's.

  2. JONATHAN MARCHESSAULT. I know he's 33, but he scored 42 goals last year. Put him with Barzal and Horvat, you've got a nice line. Plus, he has playoff and Stanley Cup experience.

  3. To say that the Pierre Engvall seven-year contract was a mistake is the greatest understatement in NHL history. Lou should have been fired for that.

  4. After the season Reilly had with the Islanders, I don't think the Islanders will be the only team out there offering him a contract, so a 1 year $1 million contract offer is unrealistic in my opinion. He was the 2nd best offensive defenseman on the team. If Lou wants to keep him, I would think it would have to be at least a 2 year contract for at least $1.5 million per.

  5. Lamarillo is a stubborn old man that needs to be replaced immediately, the horrible horrible contracts, hopefully with Roy on board we’ll see things go forward have to wait for opening day thank you Gil out with the old, bring in younger players !!!!

  6. Regardless of what has been said to the media, Roy will ultimately become the GM after a short coaching stint. That being said, he needs to have more influence to team retooling now, not when Lou finally walks out the door. UFAs: Martin and Clutterbuck are done – loyalty can be expressed with back-office jobs. From the blue line, Bortuzzo and Aho are expendable. Offering Reilly a 1-2 yr contract is the way to go. Engvall and Lee need to go. JG Pageau, Palmieri and Nelson also make good trade bait. When the organization can actually state the term "retool", the fans will be patient.

  7. I think Reilly be a good third pairing go with mayfield. I’d want to sign Bortuzzo as the seventh over Bolduc due to his defensive play especially in front of the net

  8. It kills me but I wouldn’t sign either if look for a couple of fourth liners that are quick but can also drop the gloves to protect the top guys

  9. Try and trade jgp and our 4th rounder this year to Vancouver for Ilya Mickaev. We save a little cap and give a better option for barzy and Bo than we currently have. Also, try and buyout Anders Lee's contract.

  10. Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? This is one delicate subject. Free Agents who stays and who goes. Bring back Mike Reilly. He was picked up on waivers, and he proved himself. Cal Clutterbuck. He's 36, but he can still play like he's 25, bring him back, and that goes for Matt Martin, too. Sébastien Aho, 28 small for a defenseman, but can he put the puck in the net? Pierre Engval 27 years old, goal scoring took a hit, you might not be 6'3, and weigh 215 lbs, that doesn't 3you can't throw your weight around. Simon Holmstrom. Kyle McLane. Ishkakov I hope he stays Oliver Wahlstrom he may go. HAPPY 🎂, SIMON UHLSTROM. Hear from you on Monday, but before I go, let me just say 2 things. 1. As Bob Hope would say THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, and 2. The Panthers are going to a Garden Party to quote The Late Rick Nelson. Let's hope they can JACK UP THE RANGERS AGAIN before the come back to FL, and LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

  11. This team needs a major shake up in all areas and on Defense as well! If you can deal Pulock or Pelech one of the two need to go! Have to get younger!

  12. One thing id like to add on engvall is on top of his shooting percentage being low. I think he needs to work on his shot in general. He doesn't know how to lift the puck! Most of shots were always low and trying to find the 5 hole. Not gonna beat many goalies low anymore. Gotta get that puck elevated thats all there is to it.

  13. Good morning team. Thanks again, Gil. If I could be honest, I really fear this upcoming season. We didn't make the playoffs by much (thank goodness for our loser points). The other teams in our division, that were right behind us are going to get better. I still say we miss the playoffs for a year or two, and try to get younger and faster. If we don't, there is going to be a time where the team is chasing instead of bringing the play to their opponents. Skate, defense, offensive transition, skate, pass, shoot, and score. Everyone, enjoy the holiday weekend. See you all again next day. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  14. Mike Reilly was OK -Islander fans complain how did they sign Engvall Varlamov Mayfield long term?? but you we don't know what offers were out their and what the front office had to do to keep those players and how much of an influence Lambert had on the roster. I think its pretty much know fact that Lambert was an awful coach and probably a worse talent evaluator. The issue with Reilly is he gets a long term deal turns out to be less then average then we have to hear endless Islander fans complain why this why that fire Lou blah blah blah

  15. Hey Gil – Like the saying goes " All Good Things Must Come to an End " this is true for Martin and Clutterbuck. For this team to move forward and improve the team needs to get both younger and faster and if possible less expensive especially for the 4th line. I don't hold all the cards for the future and I'm not sure who will be put in those 2 positions but I'm sure there will be plenty of hungry wingers who can infuse speed and some skill to get the results Patrick Roy is looking for. I'd bring back Mike Reilly on a 2 way contract at most for 2 years tops, I'd let Aho and Bortuzzo walk away because you can easily find an undersized player and a past his prime big guy elsewhere. When it comes to the Islanders RFA's I'd bring back Simon Holmstrom and Ruslan Ishakov and Kyle Maclean and I'd try to trade Oliver Wahlstrom in a package for an Impact player which we need badly. Personally I'd like to see the Isles trade a Defenseman either Pelech or Pulock and I'd like to see Nakita Zadorov signed he will add a big defender who plays with an edge and also has an offensive upside or as a backup I'd like to see Kevin Shattenkirk come in to add a quality Veteran who just spent a few seasons in Boston. I'm not sure forward wise who Lou will target but Nikoli Ehlers would be an upgrade.
