Pavel Dorofeyev illegal check to the head on Quinn Hughes – Tough Call Review

Pavel Dorofeyev was unlucky to get a penalty for this play on Quinn Hughes. If this is the standard it’s going to forever change how players race to the puck.

  1. Agree. This is one of those cases that can be used to illustrate that it's ALSO the responsibility to protect yourself from getting hit. Hughes didn't have the angle or momentum and put himself at risk.

  2. The angle towards the puck doesn't match the angle of attack towards the hit – it was a steep turn into the hit with the shoulder down and rising – it was a bad hit

  3. When you're saying he doesn't drive through, he's in the process of lengthening his body/standing up straighter, which is what causes the head contact. He knew the pressure from Hughes was coming, and initiated a "reverse hit" to protect his space while quinn was skating into it. Normally that's fine, but the result of that attempt to "shrug" quinn off was that he caught him in the chin with his shoulder. It's a textbook call in that regard, simply because it was primary contact with the head. You can also see in the slowed down clip starting at about 0:55 in this video, dorofeyev's left arm is swinging across the front of his body to add to momentum for the reverse hit. He knew it was coming, he made the play, and it just caught chin.

  4. I think if you are going to initiate a reverse hit, it is your responsibility not to get the head (barring an unexpected movement from the other player)
