Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson provides the consistency the team needs

While the Penguins were marred by inconsistencies on the blue line all season long, Marcus Pettersson brought the steady play they needed. In this episode, Patrick and Hunter look back on Pettersson’s season as the team’s most consistent defenseman, the value he brings, and why he should be a candidate for an extension. Next, the boys discuss why they’re optimistic this team can make their way back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs next season. Finally, we celebrate silly season a little bit early and discuss how the Penguins could possibly pull off a blockbuster trade that would bring a dynamic young talent (or two) to Pittsburgh. Which players do Pat and Hunter highlight? Stay tuned to find out!

  1. Petterson was the most consistent player this year aside from Crosby. I thought he had the best chemistry with Karlsson and I expect next season that pair will be even better.

  2. I think fanbases will sometimes overrate their own players too high. My question would be how highly do you think other GM's rate Pettersson? I just don't think it's that high. Or he would have been traded instead of John Marino, we didn't even get that much for Marino. So, imo, if Pettersson leaves it will be as a UFA not through a trade.

  3. Was wondering with the dip in performance from Malkin, and his historical trend of being one of the larger penalty taker, many emotionally driven or retaliatory. Does he need to be held more responsible, possibly by himself to reduce his PIM

  4. I would love to see the Pens' get someone like Zegras, Marner, or any of the young guys that, perhaps, Sid could mentor…teach the work ethic that he learned during those first two Cup runs.

  5. Could you imagine what a coach like Sully could do, in Anaheim, with that roster? Zegras, Terry, Carlson, Gauthier, MacTavish, Mintyukov, and Dostal….

  6. Personally, when it comes to the Pens' future, and the prospect of a rebuild, I'm hoping that there can just be a smooth…ish, transition from Sid to "the next one".
I worry though that having "the Core" will lead to another period similar to the Pens prior to the Jagr trade. They were good enough to make the playoffs, but not good enough to do much when they got there. Had they not traded Jagr, the team never would have been bad enough to draft Fleury, Malkin, and Crosby.

  7. Pretty insane take to suggest that a Zegras trade starts with Jarry. Also pretty insane to think Pens take a letter away from Letang or Malkin for Rust. I know it’s “silly” season, but can you at least try to live in reality for a week….its gonna be a long off-season if this drivel is starting Round 2 of playoffs…

  8. Funny like you said “just” 2,5 million for a next couple of seasons. When 2,5 mln is a full 4th line. Thanks to similar cap management we are still paying to Johnson (0,917mln) and Petry (1,563mln) and that’s also might be why we have Eller (2,45mln) instead of O’reilly (4,5mln). When even the biggest Ellerjerker wouldn’t deny that this would’ve upgraded our team significantly.

  9. The Penguins don't have anything to trade for Nikolaj Ehlers. There would be alot of competition with a trade for NE at $6 AAV on a 1 year deal. I'll take NE, but what do you trade for him?

  10. Pettersson has been pens top dman for the past 2 seasons. If their is a knock on him it's goal scoring but very sound defensively. Pens could easily fit zegras or Ehlers under the cap by moving reilly smith out. Would probably have to give up next year's 1st rd pick though. I like zegras game. Fun to watch. He would bring some michigan goals to the burgh. Plus he could play on crosby's wing hopefully or you could put him at 2nd line center and move geno to crosby's wing. Ehlers I haven't watched much. Winnipeg games aren't televised in my area much. I only see him play against pens 2 games a season. He seems like a consistent player though. A free agent option that might work is steven stamkos if bolts don't resign him. I know they wouldn't be getting younger but he's still consistently scoring 30 to 40 goals a season at his age

  11. Marcus Pettersson has been a stable of consistency the last two years. To think, he was almost traded for Jeff Petry two years ago. I know it sucked when Matheson was traded, but Pettersson was supposed to be the guy traded for Petry. I agree with you, where would this team's defense be without the dragon, I don't even want to think about that.

Also, I am glad I finally got to tune back into the show! I've missed the last few days, as work has been crazy, love the show guys!

  12. Pat I am with you, Trevor Zegras is one guy I would love to have. He could be a player you could build the next core around and he's got a lot of potential and is one guy I really like from Anaheim.

Is it likely no, but who knows The Penguins and Ducks have been heavy trade partners in the past.
