I’ve always liked Shayna, and I still do, but she sounded indignant defending the Canes on her last Blueshirts Breakaway interview. It was a little jarring tbh. I’m kinda not surprised to see her double down for game 4.
The hockey world has (at least) two separate entanglements in the Canes success. One, a successful Canes team validates the statistical models which helps to validate the legitimacy of the sport in a way. Which is good for growing the game. And two, the Canes are a smaller market team who achieved this level of success with cheapskate ownership and an internal cap (IMO, exactly why they can’t seal the deal even when everything else is firing on all cylinders.) If CAR can win it all, anyone can, and that’s also good for growing the game.
Throw in a dash of savvy social media presence and a history of mediocrity that kept them off most fan bases shit lists and the Canes became the second team for a lot of people. I have friends IRL (I live out of market) who root for the Canes as their Eastern Conference team, largely for these reasons.
I think we’ll see a shift in the media narrative, at least a bit, once CAR is in the rear view. Although I’m still expecting an underdog narrative the whole way.
Drink it in for now and let the I-told-you-sos flow after the dust settles.

on the one hand, the rangers still being the underdogs in this series just feels petty lol. sorry the canes have been “cup favorites” for years and have never made it to the final, i guess. idk….maybe that says something about the way that they play or the way their team is constructed.
on the other hand, i would honestly be kinda disappointed if the canes don’t leave everything on the ice tonight. cup favorites getting embarrassed at home down 3-0 with their season (and probably a lot more) on the line. i think we’ll have an answer, though.

This is the first time I’ve seen the whole rangers team buy into a coaches system and do it well, paired with how skilled they are it’s confusing why “experts” discredit them. When Vegas won it was clear it was because they played as a whole and not individuals, that’s what the rangers are doing now but with more skill.
