The guys are also joined by Maple Leafs writer for the Athletic Jonas Siegel to discuss whether or not the Maple Leafs will make major changes this offseason, Mitch Marner’s future in Toronto, the candidates for the next coach of the Maple Leafs and more from the NHL.

  1. What if the leafs don't make playoffs next year, let's say they will have a goalie problem and trades are not working out.

  2. I don't think it will be a problem convincing Mitch to move; after all, it is not likely he will win anything here.

  3. The problems are deeper than the "core". The team depth is non-existent, goal tending is always second best, and the team doesn't have a number 1 defenceman.

  4. I would start with Tavares and Reilly. They both don’t play to their cap. Reilly is paid as a #1, but he clearly isn’t. We’re still talking about bringing in another defensemen that’s better than him. So try moving him first. Tavares (although I truly love the guy) needs to move on. There’s a lot of teams that would take his services. Just tell him you’re not signing him and allow him to choose a team to negotiate with. As far as Marner goes, he wasn’t great in the playoffs, but neither was a few others. That being said, guys like him don’t grow on trees. If you can’t move Tavares and Reilly, then I would move on to Marner.
The biggest issue is accountability. We need them to hold themselves accountable and demand the best from one another. To me, Tavares is a great guy, but isn’t the right captain for this team right now.
    Cheers boys!

  5. Shanahan has 3 stanley cup rings with Detroit, who was the MVP of the Detroit Red Wings that made them champions, what was the one element that they had that the Leafs, never have had…Nic Lidstrom. He's got those million dollar rings and he never clued in that that was the missing most important thing. That's because he gave 53% of his salary to 4 players who never performed when it counts believing the defense would take care of itself…10 years.

  6. As much as everyone is saying we need change and we don’t care what it is. I guarantee that if the team is worse in September, everyone will be screaming ‘why did you trade so and so’. lol, it’s just the way the market is

  7. Get f'n reaL, boys, you're guaranteeing change?? What a joke, you guys are too smart to be sayin' that! Marner and Tavares are not movin' and without that, their hands are tied. Next year, seventh verse, same as the first!

  8. If Brad is given the ability to release Marner he will. If its Brendan it will not get done. He should have been fired. MLSE is weak.

  9. Nylander, marner,pp coach needs to go not enough heart on the team and need to find players who know how to win and not scared of going into corners or front of the net in the playoffs and can play some defence

  10. I think the NHL should get rid of the no trade clause because it's more like a no trade claws. IT gives the player too much control. It would have to be grandfathered in, but none the less it should be done. When a player signs a contract ( unless bought out ) he will receive that money from the team he signed with or the team he has been traded to, no harm no foul. This would benefit all teams as it would allow them to try and change the make up of their team without being locked into a long term deal. If no trade clause was no longer available players and their agents couldn't demand it. Problem solved.

  11. Why you saying we’re losing the trade go call buffalo they need a shake up dahlin or Owen power. Sabres up and coming and added byram. Play with Tuch and Tage not far from home. If Mitch says no look elsewhere holy negative

  12. This should have blown up after the 2020 debacle. So it just gets silly going over the same thing year after year. It is very obvious these guys havent got the guts it takes to win when it gets difficult. Why is it so easy for everyone else to see the obvious. They are successful when it is easy.

  13. Local boy Marner had it great in Toronto and he took it for granted. He didn’t realize that during the regular season, opponents are more occupied with padding their offensive stats than checking him into the boards. That was why he was points producer extraordinaire.

Playoff hockey is a completely different animal where team play is paramount. Marner for some reason detested being bodychecked hard so he avoided the dirty areas. Management with its unlimited resources didn’t hire psychologists to get Mitch to play fearlessly.

  14. I’m new here, it was my first year as a fan of the leafs, so I have no idea what happened years before, but got the just from listening to everyone talk. I find one thing curious in that press conference. It’s not the “everything is on the table” line, it’s the one before it. Where Shanny says “In the past, I believed there was a time where you talk about patience…. However when you see patterns persist and the results don’t change, you have to adjust the way you look at things”

He was the guy who always maintained that the core 4 concept would reign supreme. He’d curb stomp anyone who questioned that. This is his admission to what we’ve all been saying, that what we are doing isn’t working, we can’t wait any longer and hope for it to get better. That wording and the defeated way he is saying it makes me think this is the closest we will get to Shanny saying “I was wrong, it’s not working”. I feel like this might have some hope that change is coming.

I also think that Pelley being there isn’t a random thing either. Pelley is showing the fan base early on that he doesn’t intend to be as hands off as prior management was with the leafs. He’s showing that he’s keenly interested and willing to be involved with the team. Indirectly, he’s telling us that, while not fired, shanahan doesn’t have the free rein that he has had previously. As a new fan, I fully believe that if Shanahan tries to step in a torpedo a market trade like he did with Dubas, Pelley will be more than happy to intervene.

So as I said, I’m new here and haven’t fully embraced the paranoia and scepticism of the leafs nation, but the statement above, the atmosphere of the meeting, and the CEO making an early impromptu appearance tells me something serious may happen this time, not just more of the same

  15. I don't think he's done. They need to get a very good return for him..and I'd think the leafs asking price would be too steep for most teams

  16. Jonas is the slowest mind in hockey.. Shanny literally said he gave them lots of time and now he has had enough. Jonas knows nothing about hockey.

  17. I think the Leafs need to adapt the Vegas mindset.
Drop player loyalty, make the hard changes necessary to win a Stanley Cup.
Vegas made a lot of unpopular changes to their roster a few years ago, and it paid off for them.

  18. They need to run a public marketing campaign to hear what the public has to say. The slogan can be, “If Good isn’t Good Enough, then what will be Good Enough?” They need to promote this campaign all over the city. TTC, Yonge and Dundas Square, Malls, etc Put the people’s opinion to work and listen to what we the fans suggest.

  19. Been saying this for years, the Tavares signing was a really bad idea.
I get that Dubas got really excited for him, but that contract handicapped this team's potential so much.
And its not that Tavares isn't good. But when you already have guys like Auston and Willy, its not worth tying up that much money into a NMC.
    Dubas screwed this team.

  20. Manner will turn into Johnny Geaudreau. Just trade him to Columbus with the rest of the bums that end up there.

  21. Matthews is the Face of the Leafs Franchise. 2 players not going anywhere & performed well in the Post Season – Matthews & Nylander!

  22. Look at the Panther's, good regular season team, but couldn't do it in the playoffs, until a big change was made to the players

  23. Toronto fan should stop crying and try being a Buffalo Sabres fan for a minute lol and easy "dog" Sabres deserve a cup more than Toronto

  24. Pelley comes in….. and gives Shanahan another shot?. That alone says where LEAFS are going!.
    HAYES IS AMAZING !!!!…..

  25. Pelley has NO CLUE !!!!!…. All I’ve seen was $$$$$$ signs in his eyes!!!!
    The 3 looked sooooo LOST!!!!!
They are in such a bad spot with NTC!

  26. I'd be pretty pissed if they traded Rielly and kept Mitch. You don't have to love everything about Morgan Rielly to realize that he wasn't even close to the top 5 reasons they lost against Boston or any playoff series. Mitch is at the top here. A non-factor in so many series, not to mention the pouting and whining in Game 4 against Boston or when he flipped the puck over the glass against Montreal and cried. This is not the kind of leadership we want on this team.

I'm all for trying to swing for another P1 defensemen at any cost, but that doesn't mean Rielly has to leave. I think the team is worse with Rielly gone. You get that P1 defensemen for Mitch.

  27. That’s the definition of insanity! Doing the same thing over and over and over and expecting different results. So they accept failure these kids.

  28. How does Shanahan keep his job? For the last 3-4 years everyone was saying break up the core 4…it doesn’t work! Shanahan was way too stubborn to the point where he didn’t take advantage of being able to move Marner..tied his own hands and now will say their hands are tied!!

  29. O-dawg trying to compare the Leafs to Carolina is a terrible take.

Since 2018-19 the hurricanes have never been knocked out in the First round of the playoffs and have made the conference finals twice in that span. Saying they won "nothing" is actually disingenuous. Yes, they didn't win anything of importance but, they've won a hell of a lot more in the playoffs than the Leafs recently.

  30. Hey guys, I have one question for all of you. Do you all believe that current management has what it really takes to win a Stanley Cup in this city??
