Holmberg “hit from behind” on Lohrei- Tough Call Review

Pontus Holmberg appeared to hit Mason Lohrei heavily from behind into the boards face first. There was no call on the play and the Leafs scored shortly after. I agree it was a missed call, but not for the hit from behind. Here’s my review of rhe play.

  1. I would believe the stick got snagged and he tried to release after the first or second push but couldn't. I think the Leaf's player still has to be more careful about driving him into the boards like that.

  2. He was holding the stick! Notice allot of bruins are doing this!!!!! Hence this shit is coached!!!! Bruins are playing dirty!!!!

  3. This is why "playoff hockey rules" needs to be abolished. Call the initial penalty for holding the stick, and the second holding the stick, and you don't get the embellished dive into the boards.
Call the darn game the same way every time, by the rulebook.

  4. Look at the ref behind the net when the play happens. He saw it and he pointed. Bostons been diving and embellishing all series. Hes pointing out another. Im glad he didnt fall for it. Sorry about your face Lohrei.

  5. 2 penalties on that play
    1) Boston holding the stick
    2) Toronto cross checking
In a perfect world the play is blown dead before the cross check for the holding the stick . Boston is sour because it looked bad but neglects the circumstances that preceded it . Lohrei is off balance because he was holding Holmbergs stick for the previous 10 seconds !

  6. i think he kind of went to hold it but then his wrist looked stuck around the stick because of his glove and then he got hit so idk

  7. He missed both not just holding the stick, just cuz a guy is holding your stick doesn’t mean you can send him face first into the boards. The right call here, would be lohrei 2 for holding stick, and holmberg probably 5 and a game for boarding, so even if they take both, the goal shouldn’t have happened and Boston would’ve had a pp

  8. Hard to justify offsetting minors when it's a hand wrapped around a stick versus a guy getting slammed head first into the boards. He could have taken 1 hand off his stick and pulled it out. Lohrei didn't have the stick in the palm of his hand gripping it.

  9. So Please explain what we all want to know how does holding someone stock justify or warrant a dangerous scumbag play like that? Not the same, and only small minded people who condone that type of scumbag gameplay speaks volumes of Thier character! Smh. Get ahold of yourself, hockey aside, team rivalry aside, YOU know as well as anyone else who's a REAL fan, that that was a very SCUMBAG CHEAP SHOT from the back on a smaller player!

  10. Watching it live I thought we got away with one, but not anymore, Lohrei should’ve protected himself and not grabbed stick

  11. Leaf's fans make me laugh a little. I just keep thinking what the comment section would look like if Brad Marchand had done that exact play to Austin Matthews. Number one Marchy would have been put in the box, probably suspended, and Leaf's fans would have cried for a year. You all know I'm right. If you don't you're just not being honest with yourself. The player at the end of the play was pretty defenseless and the Leaf's player gave him an extra shove into the boards with intent. Tell yourselves what ever you want the hit was dangerous and dirty.

  12. You're obviously a homer so you are going to say no penalty but in reality, he still boarded him. Like Lundy said in the intermission you call both and set this to a 4on4, this non call didn't change the outcome of the game though the Bruins flat out did not show up and they played poor all game long.

  13. its like this guy is trying to convince himself that if you hold someones stick its ok to bury his head into the boards with a crosscheck from behind, must be a leaf fan.

  14. Turn it around. In Toronto, if a bruin player did that he'd be in the box for sure. They would definitely be talking about it during the intermission! Sportsnet never even mentioned it. Even the announcers said think we got away with one there

  15. Actually a better angle even they showed in game, he is firmly holding the stick through multiple attempts to free it and then jumps with his face into boards to sell it.

    Perfect non-call.

  16. My brother is piping mad about this "missed call" right now. He think its the reason Boston lost and not the 1 shot on goal they had in the 1st period. Play the entire game and you won't have to cry after the game about missed calls.

  17. Boston has been pulling this Marchand improv crap for years, and the refs are clearly tired of it now.

  18. Sorry. That was a clear cut boarding major call. If not major then double minor. We have seen something less than that get called. That would have changed the game. But the refs have put their whistles away when it comes to the leafs in this series

  19. One thing people fail to see here is all the diving and embellishment that BOS has been doing all series long. These stick holds are attempts to draw penalties because refs call those the wrong direction all season long. (Holding the stick becomes holding or hooking for the wrong guy.
Refs are on to it. B's have been trying to embarass refs all series long. The gig is up.
B's fans mad at this call should be raging at their own team. League could get wealthy from embellishment fines in this series if they so chose to do so.

  20. Terrible video. One does not justify the other. If you zoom in, the shaft of the stick was caught on Lohrei’s wrist and cuff of his glove. He never grabbed it, but boarding with intent like that is a major penalty and all the league jams down our throats is player safety. This really should have been 4 mins vs 2 mins. Its a bad look from the league. It wasn’t the reason the Bruins lost so Im not crying about it. But this is 100 percent being called if it was Lohrei boarding Holmberg. Watch closely Lohrei never wrapped his hand around the stick Holmberg helped sell that.

  21. Love seeing the comments saying his glove was "snagged" on Homberg's stick. His wrist is bent down clearly intent on not letting it free, like the Marchand/Bertuzzi incident, call both or call neither, despite how much I hate the call neither mentality.

  22. Its a non call , which was a good call. Boston has been do yhis all series long ( pretending to get hit while holding the Leafs stick .)

  23. Another great discussion based on the only guy on the internet dissecting questionable calls…

Keep up the good work, sir!

  24. Holding a stick and cross checking someone from behind are two different levels of penalties. Holding the stick happens throughout the game. It was common practice up until 10 years ago. Getting frustrated from your stick being held does not give you a green light to drill someone from behind into the boards. Its a safety issue. The call should have been both players in the box. No call sends what message?
