The 2024 NHL Draft Lottery will be held on May 7 at NHL Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey (TBA; ESPN, SN, TVAS).

Macklin Celebrini, the projected No. 1 pick, remained undecided on where he will play next season when his freshman season with Boston University came to an end in a 2-1 overtime loss to the eventual NCAA national champion University of Denver at the Frozen Four semifinals on April 11.

“I mean, I wasn’t really planning on losing,” Celebrini said at the time. “So, I mean, I’ve got to figure that out. Kind of still in shock, so I’m not too sure.”

The lottery will set the order for the first 16 picks for the clubs that failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The 2024 draft will reportedly be held at Sphere in Las Vegas. The first round will be held June 28, with rounds 2-7 on June 29.

There will be two lottery drawings, one for the No. 1 pick and one for the No. 2 selection.

Teams only can move up 10 selections if it wins one of the draws. Only the top 11 teams in the lottery are eligible to receive the No. 1 pick.

Once the two top picks have been established, the remaining teams will be assigned Nos. 3-16 based on inverse order of the final regular-season standings.

The San Jose Sharks, who finished last in the NHL standings (19-54-9), will have the best odds of winning the No. 1 pick at 18.5 percent.

The Chicago Blackhawks, who were 31st in the standings (23-53-6), will have the second-best odds at 13.5 percent, followed by the Anaheim Ducks (27-50-5) at 11.5 percent.

Chicago won the draft lottery last season and selected center Connor Bedard with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old led all rookies this season with 61 points (22 goals, 39 assists) in 68 games.

Celebrini turns 18 on June 13.

  1. Why is the Draft Lottery always happening at the same time as the Eurovision Song Contest!!!! 🦈🦈🦈

  2. My guess is Chicago, Montreal or Ottawa will defy all odds and get #1. I feel for Anaheim as well losing Crosby to Pittsburgh and Bedard to Chicago.

  3. I hope Chicago gets the #1 puck again so I can watch you create a video about "The NHL draft is rigged!" Dude .the Sharks are owed nothing….do you understand that blue eyes Brodie? If the Sharks want to get better start by getting rid of Grier as GM.. That guy has no business being an NHL GM ..what were his qualifications? I can tell you . I could tell you and the rest of the stupid people but everyone would be all offended….. You know what I'm talking about Brodie……. Gary Bettman and his "illusion of inclusion" So to be I honest I wouldn't be surprised if they do get the number one pick.. And then you and the rest of these conspiracy theorists won't be crying foul….

  4. Don’t be shocked if the Blackhawks some how win the lottery again. The NHL Draft Lottery is fixed worse than a Chicago election. Bettman, the Butt Goblin, loves Chicago and wants to speed their rebuild.

  5. Everyone eligible for the draft should band together and refuse to sign/play for San Jose. Punish this absolute trash franchise for never doing anything. 😎
Why waste any part of your career losing and never seeing playoff action 🤷
San Jose should be forced to sell because they're just abysmal.

  6. Even though Macklin Celebrini is from British Columbia, Canada, he was also raised in San Jose, California and was a member of the Jr. Sharks. This would not only be big for the Sharks to land a top prospect but, on a more personal level, a "come full circle" type of story (with Celebrini).

  7. Calgary, the only team I really care about has never drafted higher than 4th overall when they drafted Sam Bennett (now in FLA) in 2014. They are projecting to be 9th overall in this draft …no lottery benefit. A lot of mock drafts have them taking Carter Yakemchuk, an RD from the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. As long as it doesn't have that "rigged" feel and a certain, unnamed team gets it AGAIN. The chances Calgary gets the #1 pick sit at 5% and 64.4% that they stay at #9. That unnamed team has a 13.5% chance…and I desperately want them to fall down in the draft, even to 4th (41.7%) would make me happy enough. I would be happy if CGY takes Yakemchuk, but would be ecstatic if they took F Tij Iginla from the Kelowna Rockets…two generations of Iginla in the Flaming C.

  8. I know they are due , but being a sharks fan after all these years I’ve become used to being disappointed 🙂 . Chicago will probably pick first and sharks last🙃 . If you are a sharks fan you understand.

  9. As a Blackhawk fan I'm hoping for another lottery win I would love a tandom of Celebrini and Bedard. It would be our new Toews and Kane era start up

  10. I do think the Sharks have been punished by the hockey gods for all the breaks they got in the 2019 playoffs. I think their point has been made, and its time to let it go.

  11. The Detroit Red Wings are due for the #1 overall pick. All the times they had the worst season record they have been screwed. Besides, the Red Wings are the only team that matters in the NHL.

  12. maybe in future award #1 draft pick to 17th place team, then #2 draft pick to 18th place team, and on down the line to 32nd place team drafting 16th; teams will be rewarded for best performance outside playoffs, and for trying to make playoffs? then 17th pick goes to 16th place team, up to first place team getting 32nd pick; as is done currently for teams making playoffs?

  13. Just saying love this channel again. Good info, good production, good host good pacing. Great stuff man 😎

  14. Bettman will fix it so Chicago goes #1. The dollar signs in his eyes are too big with the prospect of Chicago being great for the next decade.

  15. If a team gets a #1 pick one year, they should be ineligible to get it the next. They can have #2 onward but not another #1 for at least 1 if not 2 drafts!

  16. My stomach has been in a knot whenever I think about this draft. I am so anxious of the outcome, I really hope SJ can pick 1st this year, they really need it after the absolute stinker of a season they just had and turn this franchise around.

  17. Alot of people are idiots – No the NHL is not giving anybody anything, Funny no one complained when Edmonton gpt 3 or 4 first rounders in a row and other teams. If the Hawks win they win. Stop with all the BS

  18. Yeah, that would be awkward. If the San Jose Sharks did a number one pick the Anaheim ducks last year was the last o team and they got cheated.

  19. On Tuesday do we get to see the ping pong balls picked? Or just Bettman coming out announcing the selection?
