He gave the team a chance to win in Game 7. Can’t expect more.
He looks 100% more upbeat here then he did during his early season disaster. Idk.
When he got sent down he likely felt similar lol.
This one ain’t on you Sammy. You gave them the only chance they had to win game 7. D left him out to dry.
When Sammy is on his game he’s great but when he loses the net he scrambled and lets in back breaking goals. A goalie who can look like a star for 50 minutes but then fall apart if things get scrambly just doesn’t work to win long term
Gotta feel for the guy but his statement about that goal and he felt he did the right thing, was weird.
He should have pokechecked that puck to the moon and it was close enough for him to do it seeing Pasta barreling down.
Not sure how he’s comfortable with his action on that play.
He played well but also I dont think he will be a cup winning goalie
Yeah I don’t get why people get mad at Sammy or other goalies in his role. Get mad at the GMs for managing assets that way. Sammy is doing his best and he gives a shit. What more do you want? If he could be better he would, but this is just the goalie he is. He is serviceable *as a back up*, he *can* steal a game, but he’s going to be pretty volatile.
The guy was on waivers at one point this season. He put together a really strong streak of games during a time where we had no one better to put in net than Martin Jones. We could have barely made it into the playoffs without him. He helped us win game two. He probably shouldn’t have started game four (in hindsight), but the FACT was that they gave Woll a chance to win back the net at the end of the season and he didn’t. At the end of the day, he came into game seven after sitting for two games and still gave us a chance to win. You can criticize him all you want but I will always put the responsibility on our $11M forwards or our $7.5M defenseman before I blame the $3.5M goalie who held Boston to one goal in regulation in a game seven.
He kept us in it. Enjoy your summer big dog
Look, his best is pretty damn good, but his bad nights are SPHL level sieve. They need a more consistent goalie, even if the highs aren’t as elite – the defense doesn’t doesn’t trust him and he should not be back next season
I can Sammy. 2021
I think we should resign him to either split time with or backup Woll.
Sammy will be cheap while also proving he can be effective when given the right assignments and under the right conditions mental health considered.
He’ll be cheap enough for us to be in a comfortable spot between him and Woll.
He gave them a chance. Not more needs to be said. We couldn’t score.
When your 3 million dollar goalie feels bad because he needed to win the game with a shutout, because your 50 million in forwards couldn’t muster more than a goal.
Yeah Sammy, I think you could just let yourself off the hook. I can’t be mad at the moderately paid goalie for letting in a muffin and not be exponentially more mad at the excessively paid offense for making that muffin matter.
Sammy’s a 2b at best and he was our starter. We hung him out to dry a *lot* and he was put in a role here he shouldn’t have been.
He played out of his mind for a good chunk of the season, but also fell off *hard* for a good chunk.
All of that was on display in the playoffs. He didn’t lose us the series, but he definitely didn’t put us over, either. Can’t blame game 7 on him at all, but he *is* part of the problem overall.
Teams lose as a team, silly to ever think it’s 1 player. Regardless off position
I hope this guy finds the help he needs. Somethings been bugging him all season hope it’s not deeper than hockey
What he was doing on the OT goal I’ll never know. Good luck wherever you end up next year, bud.
I hope we re-sign him, he’s our only reasonable option in goaltending, no worthwhile UFAs and it’d cost too much to upgrade him via trade. Sign him short term until we figure out what we have with Woll and Hildeby. Sammy’s only 27 and many goalies don’t peak until their early thirties. The Vezina nominees this year are Hellebuyuk (30yo), Bobrovsky (35yo) and Demko (28yo), last years was Hellebuyuk, Ullmark (30yo) and Sorokin (28yo)
He should. He let in that final stupid fucking goal. Thanks for the memories Sammy and thanks for the first series win last year but your time is done here
Samsonov does not have the mental fortitude for the playoffs (and arguably the regular season too).
You can see the turning point in game 7 was when he made that accidental save off the end of his stick. He played solid until then, but when he doesn’t see the puck and makes a save from good positioning it gets into his head and he starts sliding around. Any other goalie would chalk up those “accidental” saves to being in a good position, but for some reason it gets in Samsonov’s head.
Once he starts flopping and sliding, the defence get tentative and lose confidence. It filters out through the whole team. This is his fundamental problem, even when he stops the puck, if he doesn’t do it in a way where he’s seeing what’s going on, he starts to break down, taking the team with him.
Woll projects confidence even when he plays poorly, and Samsonov projects panic even when he’s stopping the puck from solid positioning because of his mental issues.
This is the fundamental problem with Samsonov, the team lacks confidence when he’s in net, even when he’s playing alright.
Washington had the same problem with him.
How about earlier in the year when everyone wanted you out of Toronto ?
Me too bra….me too
Good luck somewhere else we dont need good people or good speakers we need good performers in the playoff. Each and every person who speaks today has been trained exactly what to say to take the least amount of heat from somebody who makes much more than you do. This group cannot continue with the same players and coaches. It is hard to let good people go but every hour it happens in the real world. Every job is based on performance first. He, Reilly, Marner, Keefe and the entire coaching staff failed. We need a new Captain and new Alternate Captains. Shanahan has to go for failing to make changes as needed. Listen carefully to all of them speak and you will see they are all more interested in saving feelings and friendships than winning. A very awesome trait to have as human beings but Im a fan of a professional team who only cares about the team winning. My fandom is for the Leafs winning not for how uncomfortable players feel playing here. Players will always change and are mercenaries by definition, my loyalty is to the Crest not the temporary player wearing it. Clean house and just win. Leave your platitudes and feelings for your private life. Just win baby.
Sammy is the one guy I feel bad for blaming. He seems like such a nice dude.
this is gonna go so hard w the meme like the ‘I don’t give a fuck’ line
