Changes are likely coming for the Leafs but just a reminder that ‘blowing it up’ is not easy with core guys with full no-move clauses. Players have lots of leverage with those clauses. Trades are rarely full value as a result. Something to remember in the weeks ahead.
You all really need to chill with spamming the sub about trading Marner when he has a NMC and all the say on if he agrees to a trade which he probably won’t as he’s living his dream playing on his favourite team.
I don’t fucking care. Marner is a deadweight at 11M. Who f cares he gets 96 points during regular season when he disappears every playoffs when it matters. Points per game in playoffs? Last 4 years he mostly scored when it didn’t matter. We can get better defence and maybe sign something else.
joerph713
He was living the dream. Not anymore.
The city has turned on him. It would be pretty uncomfortable playing for a team that doesn’t want you (assuming Tre feels the same way we do) with a fan base that dislikes you. NMC just means the leafs get less in return. He will waive it to go to a team that’s a good fit if he knows his future is over with the leafs, even if he can delay it for a little while by being stubborn.
CTHT07
How did he type this while he’s double fisting hot dogs?
Bizarre48
The thing is, why would he want to stay where the entire fanbase hates him? He clearly cares what people think more than he leads on
I see him waiving but he’ll choose exactly where to go
intecknicolour
cap space is an asset.
1 mitch marner could easily be 1 domi, 1 bert and 1 more guy.
SmashinHearts
PLD Got a haul and he was a fucking bum. the only way trades might not get full value is shit like this, teams/agents speaking through insiders
Hurrdurrr73
Marner is going to waive his NMC. It’d be an insanely stupid move to decline to give a list of teams going into a contract year where your team has no intention of re-signing you.
I think you’re discounting how impactful a slightly underperforming regular season could be if they chose to put him on pp#2, off Matthews wing and another disaster post season would be to his UFA contract.
85 points and another 3 points in 7 games and he’s now a 9m x 7 player. That’s a 25 million dollar haircut from 11×8. If he cares about the money like we all seem to think he does, then the move for him is to get out of this city and to a place where he can be “the guy” and lead them to the post season. A place like Seattle, Utah, LA, etc where they need that elite scoring to make an impact.
The rest, will stay.
summer_friends
Make it hard for him. Boo him out of town the way we booed Bryan McCabe out of town back in the day.
LairdOftheNorth
Got to hope that someone like marner wants a change of scenery as well.
marumaruko
Not a nice move, but do you think the team could help a move if they commend Willy’s efforts and give him the A while stripping it off of Marner? Then, offer no extension (or a cheap one) and I think the player would ask for a move.
tuckermia
Oh geez, I totally forgot that
patchdouglas
Thanks, Dad
torontoker13
I can’t stand the guy. The smug we don’t care about anyone outside this rooms opinion has always come across as entitled and disrespectful imho. I don’t think people should smack him or Paul out in public but if I heard it I would t be shocked. No move clause means jack ship these days Sure he can submit a list and pick where he goes but either way he’s gotta go
TheGapInTysonsTeeth
Wanna bet? He’s fuckin gone bro. I’ll bet you anything you want.
Will we get good value? Probably not. Probably 60-80 cents on the dollar value-wise. But the cap can be used to do other things.
Will our in-season PK and point totals go down a bit? Yeah probably. But if you replace his cap hit with gamers who show up in those key moments, it’ll be a win regardless
Spare-Notice-224
You think the leafs are still his favorite team after these past two/three playoffs? LMFAO.
Golden_Hour1
I don’t care. We need the cap space more than anything
whalepopcorn
We need goaltending. I’m not a Sammy hater but he just isn’t a playoff goalie. He lets in goals that should not be going in. I know it’s hard to find a top goalie but it has to be said. Without it, it doesn’t matter how many great players we got.
Current-Own
Thanks Pierre. You just summed up what I’ve been saying for the last little while. I think true fans know the story. Or at least I hope they do.
valhalla2611
A better coach would do wonders. I know people would hate to hire him, especially with MLG having it’s own scandal but a guy like Quenville would be helpful.
highnoon222
Oh
Puzzleheaded-Ask9884
It works both ways, there are many ways for teams to make players uncomfortable so they move, it’s as simple as dropping him down a line or two, cutting his ice time, etc. He won’t want to stay at this point anyway, he’s the face of what’s wrong with the Leafs and knows he’s not going to be happy. He knows he needs to go to a team where he can produce good regular seasons and never be expected to break a nail in the playoffs.
MrDrunkvader
Just bench him every game until he waves the NMC out of embarrassment.
DessertRose17
Fuck the return. I’ll take the 10.9M cap space. And Captain stone face and hands can walk after next year. Cause no one in their right mind is trading for that boat anchor contract without serious assets attached.
StingyJack21
Ok hear me out and this may be crazy but perhaps we get Jonathan Huberdeau (salary partially retained) plus a D man like Weager? Huberdeau is a system player and we saw what can happen in a fast past system with lots of speed.
Beavie_
That’s the discussion I have with my brother about this. As much as it’d be fun to rage and go “BLOW EVERYTHING UP!” with contracts with term and NMCs, that makes things more challenging. I don’t have a blind rage for Marner even if I have been frustrated with his play, but I think of the “Core Four,” he is the one that is the most “expendable” right now.
Matthews’s got 4 points in five games, two of which he was sick as a dog and game 1 everyone sucked. Willy has the most term, and he came up big when the team needed it. Tavares might not have as much value due to the cap hit and his age, but will not make as much next deal and if he asks for that much, might as well let him walk.
So Mitch Marner in the final year of his deal, likely will be asking for a lot might be the most likely to move, especially if they play hard ball with him, and with him going to be a UFA. As much as he might have some sentiments playing for his hometown team, it is still a business, the Leafs need to have the best team, not necessarily just the “best couple of players,” and this coming year is his big chance to get a contract where he is, in theory, at his most valuable. He needs a strong year. So picking a list of teams he’d wave his clause for, picking teams he might be interested in signing long term for, may be a benefit to him. He’d have a season to “Test drive,” try to put up the best numbers he can and if he doesn’t feel it, he’ll sign somewhere else next season. And he is the person who we will likely receive the better offers from, even with a NMC giving us less leverage. Maybe a player slightly less skill but better value and a pick? Maybe a position we could use?
I know we’re all playing “arm chair GM” right now and we don’t know everything that goes on behind closed doors, but that makes some sense to me. But with four players (five counting Mo) taking up a LARGE portion of our salary has really hurt us, especially when they have only won one playoff series during this entire era. The pandemic has f’ed the cap and sadly you can’t account for a deadly plague when you expect the cap to raise during the course of these contracts to lessen the strain, but every team has had to deal with it. If we need to free up around 10 mil of cap, Marner’s is the most likely person to do it with. Wish you the best Marner, but if now isn’t the time to make some big changes, then when?
That-Stage-1088
A lot of unrealistic fans. The guy has an NMC in a contract year. He has been hated for the past 3 years during playoffs. Doesn’t change much. He is young, he will wait out and go to UFA.
Sending him to the press box or chopping his minutes tanks his value both to the Leafs and himself. Lose-lose.
Not saying we shouldn’t trade him but I think a lot of people don’t know how dire the situation is. The upcoming UFA market is a bit weak. Teams aren’t just going to eat your 11M cap space and give you a great piece in return.
If you try to dump the money via 3 team trade, get ready to lose Marner and a prospect of the Cowan calibre.
Lastly, teams with players that move the needle for us, don’t have the cap room anyway.
UnconsciousOptimism
Is there a chance he waives this summer and is in a new uniform in October? Is that in his best interest or does he give trelivinf a promissory to waive after next season and they can either talk about extending or moving on dependant on the type of season he has. There’s no guarantee he puts in another good season worthy of his demands, line demotion or otherwise. It could be a very stressful and unproductive year ahead. Might be advantageous to both to move this summer while value is still high.
qwertytrewq00
I have a feeling Mariner is back next season. MLSE like most Canadian companies are risk averse. If that’s the case he better show up juiced to his tits like the off-season Willy put on 20lbs of muscle. If he shows up looking like a 12 year old boy again I’m gonna be pissed.
thistreestands
Good thing Keefe doesn’t have a NMC!
umad1337
Not only do other trades like PLD prove it’s not impossible but some leaf fans need a reality check when it comes to the core 4. You take one of those 10+ million contracts and trade it away & actually have the ability to keep young prospects around beyond their ELC + space for free agency and possibly a future trade where the leafs can take advantage of a cap crunched team for once.
Matthews is Matthew’s even though he has disappointed in the post season he’s still a player you never let go.
Nylander has played his ass off each post season and scored multiple goals and deserves his spot
Tavares is old and will be legitimately close to impossible to move without retaining a ton.
This leaves Marner , the only player from the core 4 that has disappointed each playoffs , is a setup man and never shoots first or scores a ton . Plays on the wing which is more disposable than centres. Has proven he can’t handle the Toronto pressure in playoffs.
He’s an amazing player that just so happened to join the leafs at a bad time with the amount of young forward talent they had & the pandemic cap freeze which completely fucked the Shanaplan to bits.
It’s not even personal in a business sense & I hope he knows that. Just more or less doesn’t fit the Salary cap puzzle that is hockey today, where you have most teams at the cap & some using LTIR loopholes. The difference is most teams build from the net out, while the leafs did the opposite.
Ignore all the dumb fans burning jerseys being unhinged about him.
Enjoy the time he had here , and hope he goes out west.
The money he frees up is the true value, not the package we get back, although once again based on other trades around the league he should still net the leafs a very solid return. He is the missing piece for alot of teams that need help at forward.
weebax50
Is there any defensive prospects in the pipeline ?!?
BryanMccabe
Easy if you stick them in the gulag
jeeztov
Thank you for stating this. All these id10ts in social media saying trade Marner, doubt that 90 percent of them now why a NTC even is. They I’ll get little value for him, it’ll be a shock if we come close to fair market value and in typical Leafs fashion he’ll walk and we’ll get zero
