6. Carolina Hurricanes
Top 5 Prospects: Alexander Nikishin, Scott Morrow, Jackson Blake, Bradly Nadeau and Gleb Trikozov
The Hurricanes, as an organization, are just unfair. A team bordering on being a cup contender, well coached, great development, great hockey ops personnel. Add to the list they have a great scouting department and understand how to get every last drop from every draft.
A team this good should not be loaded like this with prospects but here we are. The Hurricanes, over the last ~5 years, have been adding value piece after value piece. As a result, they have 23 players in the system with some decent NHL likelihood. Not only that, while they don’t have any guys that profile like certain stars in their pool, they have a number of guys with some star likelihood that you look at and think “he could break through”.
Alexander Nikishin, Scott Morrow and Bradly Nadeau, in particular, have been putting up tremendous production in the KHL and NCAA respectively and could be real difference makers for the Canes.
They also acquired superstar producer Jake Guentzel (who they’ll probably re-sign) from the Penguins and in doing so didn’t have to give up any of their top 5 prospects to do so.
Oh and they drafted Kochetkov a few years ago and he’s now on his way to becoming a full-time NHLer for the Canes and now they have newly drafted Ruslan Knazheyev trending the right way right behind him.

Of all the Cup contenders in the playoffs, we are so far ahead of the rest that it’s just crazy how good of a job the front office has done. Just look at the tweet, our section is by far the most rewteeted and liked. Teams and fans are all taking notice wondering how we’re doing it. We could be the model for how to draft prospects since we’re ranked #6 while being Cup contenders being setup for many years to come. Obviously there is a luck aspect with hitting home runs on drafts like Aho, Slavin etc but it seems that the FO is hitting on drafts way more than missing.

This is such fantastic news. The Canes are building this the right way. Previously when we all got mad at them for not trading away picks or prospects we should have realized they have a plan.
