Washington is on their way to a full rebuild. Ovi might force the GM to try to hang on for an extra year or 2 but it's over for the Caps this generation. I think Ovi would retire if it wasn't for Gretzky's record he's chasing.
Even as a Capitals fan this was the expected outcome, I predicted Rangers in 5 assuming Lindgren would steal one because I had seen him steal a lot of games over the season. The Rangers are just better from top to bottom. The Rangers likely would have won in 4 even if the Caps were healthy, which they weren’t. It was the worst I’d ever seen Ovechkin play, and the old guard in general didn’t perform well outside of Wilson. The positive I’ll take is some young guys performed admirably. Lapierre shined, Alexeyev stepped up big on the back end.
All this being said I just don’t believe in the Rangers going all the way. They certainly could, but even though the Caps got swept I wasn’t impressed with the Rangers at even strength. We know they have stellar special teams but now they’re facing a team that actually outperformed them on special teams in the regular season and won’t be as forgiving as the Caps. I do think the Canes win the series and then lose to Florida in the ECF.

The reason why the Rangers didn't win the cup 2 years ago is because they played 2 straight game 7 series in a row and they were tired by the end of the Lightning series.
see I think the craziest thing is that the worst team kept all the games to a one to 2 goal game (except game one) while having 2 main d men injured and then losing 2 more later in the series so even though we got swept I still think they put up a crazy fight all we needed was just to hit the net LMAO too many ez goals missed

Rust vs Rest: IMO i find that if the 'rest' team gets 5+ days off they DO often have rust in game 1 but the longer the series goes the more that rest starts to help…but the NYR have the perfect mix of just a couple (3 or 4?) days off AND plenty of time to scout the opponent they knew they'd end up with…id say 3days rest is the ideal balance, only want it longer if u have injuries u want to recover from etc

NHL should have just automatically place Rangers to second round to save embarrassment to Ovechkin
