I've seen people talking about how the length is too long, but they don't seem to realise just how old Ovechkin and crew is.
Ovi is 32 years old guys, so when you're talking about how bad this contract might be in 6 years when Carlson is declining and still has a couple years left, remember that it'll be a 38 year old Ovechkin, 36 year old Backstrom, 37 year old Oshie.
Like Ovi will be 40 years old when this contract is over, who in the right mind thinks that Washington could possibly be in a state to contend if only it wasn't for the 8 million cap hit from Carlson?
It's a great contract because the longer term will mean a lower per year hit and the longer term is not something Washington cares about because they will not be a competitive team at that time anyway.
