  1. I like the idea of Utah going with a similar color scheme to the Jazz. There's really only two cities that coordinate all their teams colors well — Pittsburgh and Seattle

  2. 6:13 The knee, or the fact that his butt hole kissed the ice from doing the splits on that ridiculous first period save. I dunno, I didn't like how that looked at all. On the other hand, this is where Silovs needs to pull a Bubble playoffs Demko. Sorry DeSmith, unless you have a playoff gear we don't know about, I kinda suspect Silovs ends up shining if anyone is to be the hero. Unless of course DeSmith showed us what he is made of after the last Oilers game. Then ok, this could be interesting.

10:34 Sounds to me like the league basically said, "FINE, let the baby have his bottle."

  3. People keep bringing up the Cleveland Browns, but that was a completely different situation. The same owner still had the team rather than selling it. The league was not in favor of the move, so the one thing they could do was strip the name. There were moves before and after than, and always the team name and history went along.

  4. If the arena land deal auction doesn't go through, I think Meruelo forfeits all history and it goes to Utah. He can retain rights to name, logos and styles at that point. If another Arizona NHL arena does not get built and ready in five years; name, logos and styles gets forfeited to the NHL for archival status and that will end any more Meruelo involvement in NHL.

  5. Arizona is still a franchise in good standing with the league; inactive until they have an arena. They essentially have traded the entire current roster for Utah's expansion draft rights for when they reactivate. Utah is an expansion team, and nothing has changed with Arizona except for them being inactive for up to five years. This is not actually that complicated. The Quebec Bulldogs did the temporarily inactive franchise thing in the 1910s, so there is some precedent.

  6. I agree that the history should go with the team, though there are some cases of this happening in other leagues. In the NFL when the Cleveland Browns left for baltimore when they got an expansion team they got to keep the brown's history, and i'm pretty sure somethin similar happened in MLS with the San Jose Earthquakes. Plus Utah ownership definitely seems like they wanted expansion and this kind of just fell in their lap so i dont think they mind starting fresh. Realistically though yeah it makes more sense to consider the history to move with the team but it not officially makes for a fun "did you know" talking point when brought up at least.

  7. actually, real question, if a player had a NMC….would they have the right to decide to NOT move to Utah? I imagine since only players have a M-NTC that doesn't count as it's not a "trade" …so….yeah, i dunno.

  8. history goes with the team. thats why you have the tennesee titans wearing their oilers alternates when they played the houston texans this last season

  9. When Demko made that save I thought to myself "that save was so violent I wonder if he hurt himself"

  10. The fact the coyotes stayed in Arizona that long is a mess, how the team just got up and left last second is a mess, it’s really a bad look. Utah doesn’t even have a building either they have an arena meant for basketball. Idk I think Hamilton and Quebec City deserve one over any other American city

  11. As a Coyote fan… i wanted the press to ask this very question about if the team is reactivated, will we be able to pick any/all players (if they are still left in Utah in 3-5 years) via an expansion draft… I don't see the majority of fans coming back in the first few years if we can't get back Josh Doan, Cooley, etc. The only way i see fans like myself excited for the first season they are back without those kids that we were excited for the past couple of years, is if Matthews signs a multi-year deal.

  12. 13:05 – It was barely touched on, but Gary said in the presser with Alex that 'if he follows thru then YES they will be an expansion team with a draft similar to Vegas and Seattle.'

  13. Gary Bettman said if Arizona builds a new arena they'll get the same expansion draft rules as vegas and seattle

  14. You are talking like a hockey fan. The NHL does everything for money, they do not care care about franchise history etc.

    Show me the money.

  15. Also in Leafs news – Tie and Max Dome are the only father/son duo in Maple Leafs history to both score a goal in a playoff game.

  16. I don't get the criticism of playing Ullmark. He was brilliant. He performed some straight up robberies and, if we're being honest, was the better goalie. That hurts me to say as a Leafs fan.

  17. I really like the Bruins tandem. This era of high paced fast scoring games…it’s different and rethinking goaltending starters ..I find it compelling.

  18. Lindy Ruff is a 0/10 hire. The Sabres needed to nail this coaching search and they utterly failed. He might get them back in the playoffs but he can’t be the long term solution

  19. The Arizona situation now parallels the Cleveland Browns situation in the 80's, instead of the owner picking up the franchise and U-Hauling them to Baltimore, Gary Bettman is hauling the franchise to Utah. Art Modell didn't get to keep the Browns name and Bettman and the BoG don't retain the Coyotes name. In a weird way it kind of makes sense and I wouldn't be surprised if the Browns were cited as a precedent.

  20. The history part is identical to the Cleveland Browns move in the late 90's… the history, name and everything stayed in and with Cleveland.. where the players and franchise moved to Baltimore.. Of course the City lost in that one.. because they agreed to build it only to have the move happen… in court the owner would have been killed and the NFL knew it..

  21. Yeah mind bogling. Meruelo does not have a team/franchise at the moment? He has rights for team name and logo? How can person own a team history? If Coyotes never will return will history books have records for defunct teams like Montreal Maroons, Brooklyn Americans and Alex Meruelo?

Regarding strange histories I would say one is Montreal Maroons franchise actually existing until 1947… Several "attempts" to move it to all sort of locations.

  22. I wouldn’t be surprised that if Meruelo fails to secure a building for the new Coyotes he will be forced to sell the “franchise rights” (or however you want to semantically/legally put it) to Smith.

If you think about it, all Meruello did was sell the team’s personnel (players, coaches, gm, etc.) to Smith’s new expansion team in lieu of an expansion draft. And if/when Meruelo gets the Coyote’s reactivated, there will be a re-entry draft in the style of an expansion draft.

I think all this speculation talk just confuses things. It’s pretty simple when you just break it down piece by piece.

  23. I wonder if that phrasing was deliberate after the awkward press conference a week ago where Bettman shushed Meruelo. Going from "Let's not do the history, it doesn't help" to Daly saying "The history stays with Meruelo" makes for odd context

  24. Presumably if Meruelo keeps his current trajectory and doesn’t buy the land, to make a buck her could sell True North the right for the old Jets records back? Sorta a Marvel-Fox merger situation

  25. Yes Arizona is keeping the teams history. I really like this as a Sens fan because first of all, it’s less confusion and second of all history should stay with the city or state and not move to the next place with the team

  26. Why would the Coyotes thing surprise anyone at this point; why would one of the most incompetent front offices in sports stop being incompetent just because they no longer have a team?

  27. Desmith is De-man, time to rise to the occasion for a few canuckleheads including myself. Stay positive…

  28. I joked about it earlier but the nhl is literally doing the same thing the nfl did when the browns moved to Baltimore. However the browns were a more historically important organization to the nfl than the coyotes were to the nhl so it makes even less sense.
