Mark Stone returned to practice eight days before the playoffs, exactly the same number as last year when he went on to play in Game 1 of the playoffs and help lead the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup.

Considering what Vegas did last season and were able to do at the deadline due to his absence, it’s understandable that the hockey world is quite skeptical about Stone’s situation.
Much of what is being said about it is simply ignorant, especially those suggesting the injury was fictional. However, that’s not to say there isn’t a valid gripe from those questioning the legitimacy of what the Golden Knights are doing.

This makes no sense why is there a salary cap during the regular season but no salary cap during the playoffs? What would happen and how much would the playoffs be affected if there was a salary cap during the playoffs as well?
i don't like or hate VGK (the organization). i def admire their american-style, ruthless risk-taking with their roster construction. their fanbase at times are a bit delusional and self-absorbed.
a lot of fanbases hate VGK, understandable. yet most teams and fanbases are not willing to see picks, prospects and bold moves made to win a stanley cup when the chance comes up.
alert to all "hockey fans" lol: all the teams play under the same rules. quit bellyaching about a salary cap rule that the your team of choice plays under, and was one of 30 teams that voted to keep the current cap rules back in 2015…. unlike TBL and STL who actually petitioned to get LTIR changed back in 2015, and was told, NO.
at this time there is no inclination for the nhl BoG to change LTIR, because there's enough gm's that know that they could be high and dry with injuries at any given time.
cheers 🍻
I agree Brodie…the cap should be in place during the playoffs..
As a preds fan I support it. Vegas is doing what’s winning and that’s not cheating it’s being smarter than the system. Until it’s illegal or the salary cap is made to matter in the post season I see no issue.
I'm so tired of this. They gotta change the rule this offseason.
The lightning are always trashed for doing it one damn time when kucherov had damn double hip surgery. He was able to get back to the playoffs and still was labored some. Yet Vegas does it every damn year. And by major amounts of money. MAKE A DAMN RULE FOR THIS
Just because they're following the rules doesn't mean the rules shouldn't be changed
Why not add a limit to salary cap in the payoffs. Example: regular season 80 mil, post season 85 or 87.5 mil. So LTIR for genuine injuries and non-cap circumvention can still be used; but also limit how much money can be on the books for postseason. Just a thought-not sure how well it could work in practice or the exact numbers
Every single team in the league can do the same thing. They don't.
Wow they all recovered!!! Its a miracle!!!!
I never fail to get a hearty chuckle out of the way some folks gripe and whine over this. My summer sport is racing and we have a saying – "If ya ain't cheatin', ya ain't tryin'!" As you say, there are lots of teams playing this game. The Knights are just a whole lot better at it than everyone else. They're trying.
Unless they pay players in the playoffs,.then there is no fix. Owners won't want yo do that and what about the other teams that dont make the cut? Do they just get shafted? The real fix is a luxury tax system
Why don’t players get paid in the off season? 🤔 asking for a friend …

Mark Stone came back during the regular season the first time he was LTIR'd.
People refuse to acknowledge this in their grifts.
There are also 17 teams above the cap, and many fans upset about VGK… are fans of those teams.
How will things work out next season? If Stone is back on the roster, how can Vegas afford to keep the players acquired at this year's trade deadline? I assume that these things will be worked out after the playoffs, bit I was just wondering.
Chicago did this exact same thing at the end of the 2015 season with Patrick Kane.
The golden knights not long ago were in a fight to stay in the Wildcard race. If stone had returned when we was likely able to …. the Knights would have had to play a much reduced roster. This has absolutely tarnished the credibility of the league as a whole. Not to mention the team doctor that signed off that he remained injured. also its a pretty disgusting look on the stone. to willingly sit out as their team struggled the past few weeks is pretty pathetic. the whole thing is gross. Brodie is right. the NHL needs to adjust this rule and its so simple. The team needs to dress a cap compliant roster in the playoffs. there. solved.
A player that is on ltir at the trade deadline, and still on ltir on the last game, shouldn’t be able to play for the first series. Either that or apply the salary cap for the playoffs based on the regular season salaries.
Faking injury for money, plain and simple. Hope that non-profit charity health organizations VGK are affiliated with point this out… Its sickening, and its not right. Period.
It almost like the city set up for tax avoidance/ evasion realized how to bend the rules. LOL
Two solutions
1. make the cap enforceable in the playoffs OR
2. if you are LTIR in game 82 you cannot appear in the first round of the playoffs. That stops the abuse. And yes the VGK are not the only ones but they are the current worst.
The NHL can adopt a rule similar to MLB in that a player must be on your active roster by a certain deadline if you want that player to be eligible for the postseason. That would so a lot to curb this kind of manipulation.
Dude, the argument of „technically not illegal“ and any team may utilize the LTIR for the postseason fails at the point where most of the injuries are not exactly predictable and therefore an acquisition at the deadline is too risky – hence your medical department works in line with the managements interests. And three times in a row makes it utterly unbelievable that MS returns in time by coincidence.
Its a joke to call it „Ok“. Vegas will play with a team worth 105 M$!
Sweet. Hockey talk.
I'm a VGK fan and absolutely agree the LTIR / playoff stuff needs to get fixed
Just pro-rate the remaining salary in the season. If 1/3 of the season is left when the player is put on LTIR, then 2/3 of the salary that counts towards the cap will then still count towards the salary cap.
The same guy just happening to get injured for just long enough at just the right time three years in a row is bordering on Powerball jackpot probability levels. I mean, at least they admit it. Their fans should do the same. You're the Astros of the NHL. If that's how you want to win, it's pretty pathetic.
Best thing that could happen is Vegas wins another Cup this year.
That would bring many win-win situations.
1) Vegas is happy.
2) Hertl wins a Cup(some Sharks fans would be happy for Tomas)
3) With so much backlash from bitter hockey fans in Canada and US there would be an emergency meeting to fix the LTIR rule.
Problem solved.
4) Vegas would be happy(oops, said that already)😊
Brodie the nhl allows this .if opposing players wouldn't injure him year after year then there would not be a story
As an Avs fan this is so frustrating. Landeskog actually has an injury, that’s what the rules is for. Not for people like Stone. Cheaters in my book
Lightning did it for years ago
Agree, Brodie, this is a very unsavory manipulative move, but which the NHL left themselves wide open to.
