The NHL is such a joke of a league. No wonder they've become less relevant as a whole on the sports landscape despite new technologies and more teams. They just constantly screw up at every turn.
Look out Salt Lake City the Coyotes cost Arizona taxpayers millions of dollars.
I thought Houston, Quebec, maybe even Saskatoon. Didn't have Utah near the top of my list.
Honestly at this point if Arizona wants a chance to keep hockey they have to lose this current team. This current isnt competitive and the only way to make it competitive will be to inject money that they simply dont have. Let them go and get an expansion team once a new arena is built. Do the ultimate rebuild and focus the next few years on building not only a new arena but a new team that will be competitive day one similar to vegas. If this new coyotes team can hit the ground running like vegas did they will have a bigger chance of success. As ive said the current team must go.
Phoenix deserves a better organization than the Coyotes. Move the team and let someone new come in. This place is a great hockey town but the Coyotes haven't handled anything well.

Winning the bid, doesn't necessarily mean building is erected overnight, cutoff work time for building codes differ from city to city. City bylaws.

I need to ask this. What people don’t understand enough is that once a franchise leaves, there’s no guarantee that it’ll ever come back.
Yeah maybe there’s an expansion team in Arizona in 5 years. But…it’s going be a complete clean slate with new people in charge. All of that investment on draft capital, prospects, and NHL talent will all be gone to SLC. How long can fans continue to support a bad team or rebuilding team?? If it’s Mereulo still owning that new expansion team called the Arizona Coyotes, how much appetite will there be to support his vision?? They are already unsettled with him right now.
This clearly sounds like the Cleveland Browns!!
And keep in mind AM and the NHL are doing this under the assumption that the bid will be a success. What if AM pulls the trigger, sells the team, the Utah ownership moves the team to SLC, and now all of the sudden, Alex Mereulo loses the bid??
It would be Tempe all over again!! It’s almost like AM is giving the local officials more reasons to back out.

As a local in SLC, I'm excited about the news. But for Coyote fans, this could be best in the long term for PHX. The NHL wants PHX in the league, there's no doubt about that.
This entire situation is absurd. This should not be happening in a professional sports league. It might be okay for minor league sports, but not a pro league. It makes the NHL look like clowns.

This exposes just how little of a plan the commissioner's office has had the whole time. It was going to take three years to build a new arena no matter what. Allowing the Meruelo group to move into the Mullet arrangement with ASU should have been acknowledgement of this. Stunning incompetence by the league.

I’m a lifelong coyotes fan from Utah. Coyotes in Utah has been my dream for years.
Shane Doan played his rookie games for the last year of the original jets before they moved to Arizona. Now his son is playing his rookie games for the last year of the Coyotes before they move to Salt Lake City. History repeats….
Salt lake crickets for the win.
