Zdeno Chara obliterates Max Pacioretty

Devastation in a game between the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. It was interference, but by no means a cheap hit, hits like this occur several times a year, the onus is on the building to have proper padding. Chara was not fined or suspended. I agree with the nhl, it was just an unfortunate situation.

  1. I hate it when they show a replay, then slow it down so it makes it look like a few extra seconds go by during the play.

  2. 1. Chara is not a goon, and that makes this even worse
    2. This is not 'malicious', but he should know better
    3. He should be suspended for 3-6 games

  3. Chara said that Pacioretty "jumped" into the pane. Yeah. Why would you jump intentionally face-first like that?

Hockey players aren't really that bright, but I don't think they're THAT dumb…

  4. @HabsFanTom
chara did not punch him from behind at all, chara stepped in cause paciorety went after kampfer who is 5' 8'' and had a broken nose.

  5. @MattiasXL
no he did not say that ay all, if you are hearing that thats just the local frogs stirring up some shit.

  6. @slowhands666 i think he was meaning that he didn't think it would be worth an in-depth review, not that it wasnt goign to be reviewed or shouldn't be

  7. i'm not going to debate about this cuz i know chara is guilty, even if he's not a goon. but boston realy sucks bad. Big Bad Bruins…. yes, they are big, and bad at hockey. 🙂

7-2 last 9 games. big lol.

  8. @IslandersFan25 I sincerely hope you are joking or I am misunderstanding your comments. I mean jesus, at the 00:18 mark you can clearly see that Paci is unconscious. Hope he is able to make a full recovery, that was brutal

  9. Definitely interference. Other than that, nothing dirty about it. The injury is strictly due to the location of the hit and Chara's size. Can't suspend him for being a giant.

  10. @kanada514 you do know that hits like these occur 20-30 times a year with less injury, i think there maybe could be a design change but think about it, it is chara, of course when he does it there will be injury because he is so big and strong, that is just the way it is. Maybe once every 5 years a player is seriously injured from a hit like this, Ryan Smyth being the last, and Smyth is fine now. Is once every 5 years an alarming rate? I don't think so, especially with NHL salaries.

  11. @NHLArchive It's not an issue of injury rate it's an issue of severe injury and kanada514 is right. They are not talking about Chara, you get hit by Chara you have a high chance of getting hurt he's a brick wall on skates! But changing the design of something so simple to lessen to injury to hockey players means they are back on the ice sooner, therefore players, managers, physicians and everyone involved is happier so why not change it????? It wouldn't cost alot.

  12. @kanada514 see that is still an overreaction, because there have been hits worse than this in teh 80s and 90s and nobody died

  13. @Tharrild well there obviously should be at least some protective padding on the stanchions, but if one guy every 5 years (or more) gets injured by it then for the other 4-5 years no one is thinking about it, come back and talk to me a year for now

  14. thank you nhlarchive for using such fancy words I learn a lot just by reading the descriptions 😀 "obliterate" and "onus" …. UPLOAD EAGER'S HIT ON DALEY

  15. Chara will not be fined or suspended, good on the NHL for not overreacting. It was unfortunate, but sometimes things happen that you cannot control.

  16. Update: Pacioretty has a severe concussion and fractured cervical vertebre. (He broke his neck)

  17. @NHLArchive but isn't that guy who gets injured every 5 years too much? you can't predict the injury they are going to sustain, so why not spend the extra money and decrease the percentage of serious injury? in the first place.

  18. @Tharrild No, it isn't, why would it be, that is not even a once in a lifetime thing to happen to a guy, it is extremely rare, so why worry about it, if we cared about every random thing that could potentially cause a serious injury we would all be wrapped up in sterile bubbles

  19. People who like this hit, chara barely even hit him he just pushed him strait into the edge of the boards, nice chara, that took ALOT of skill

  20. @Jakewells97 you are right but i don't think many people liked it, most people view it as unfortunate.

  21. If you think this was a dirty or even suspend-able hit then you're one of the people ruining hockey today…sadly and confusingly a lot of this softness is coming from Canadian markets…..go figure! Disgusting of the Montreal fans and police dept. to take this any further. So phony!

  22. It was clean, unfortunately, but definitely uneccessary. Chara definitely knew better than that, but it was clean. Stuff like this happens all the time. Hell, last week, a guy on Tampa Bay had this happen to him, and he got up and skated off. It's just unfortunate that he got hurt.

  23. Every reason why I became a hockey fan! Sucks getting hurt but thats the game.. Don't watch or attend if you don't like it!

  24. To all of those complaining about Chara's "late hit" do all hockey fans a favor and look at rule 56 of the NHL rule book. Pacioretty chipped the puck at the blue line and was hit into the stanchion short of the center red line. Pacioretty had possession of the puck and was hit immediately following his loss of possession. Clean check and was not interference. Yes its horrible that Pacioretty got hurt but he knows that it is part of the game. I applaud Gary Bettman for not suspending Chara.

  25. Pacioretty is BY FAR a dirtier player than Zdeno Chara. I wish u a speedy recovery Max Pacioretty, but maby that stanchion was tryin to tell ya something!

  26. @HabsFanTom seriously?
he was not going for the head, he was going for his body, and pacioretti just swang into the plexiglas, but he wanted to take the hit, so he knew that if he got hit, he would be at least close to the glas, and if there were glas, the hit would be dealt without any penalty…

  27. @HabsFanTom you call that hit dirty? he just hit him into the boards, maybe he shouldnt have been that close to the boards. i bet you were there and calling 911 saying that you wanted chara arrested because of it. It was a clean hit/push just a bad place to be in. no ones to blame and the NHL clearly dished out what was needed… which was nothing but a get well letter.
