Matt Rempe charging on Ilya Lyubushkin – Tough Call Suspension Recommendation

Matt Rempe charging on Ilya Lyubushkin – Tough Call Suspension Recommendation

Here’s the hit by Matt rampe on Ilia lbushkin there was no call on this play and leushin left the game with a head injury now the question is should there have been a penalty and what penalty would you call before I talk about what penalty I call there is a couple of

Things I’d like to talk about in terms of approach people are obviously going to look at this and say he hits him from the side it’s side of body to side of body clean shoulder Tosh shoulder but I think it’s important to note the difference between hitting from

The side and just hitting with the side of your body from a straight on angle of approach he’s not hitting from the side he’s approaching straight on North South contact just because he rotates to the side doesn’t mean he’s hitting him from the side he’s hitting him straight on

With his angle of approach and yes he Glides into contact but he’s not really gliding into contact I’ll explain what I mean about that more in detail in a second here but really the only reason he has feet on the ice is because he knows he has to rotate he

Can’t just go straight on like this at the velocity he’s going and expect to not hurt himself or make this a really Reckless check so what he’s going to do is pick his left foot off use that to drive forward with his right foot and

His right foot stays on the ice his left foot comes off so that he can rotate his body twist it around and explode into contact sideways he’s basically using that plant foot as a pivot and Swinging his other leg around that doesn’t do anything to soften the blow it just means that he’s

Using the side of his body instead of the front you can really see it here it’s facing each other and then at the last second he rotates and lifts his shoulder up and drives outwards into contact it’s this angle of approach at that velocity that makes the hit so

Dangerous for me but what rule is he actually breaking there’s not really much head contact here so it can’t fall under rule 48 so I’m going to look at NHL rule 42 charging a minor or major penalty shall be impos on a player who does one of

Three things either skates or jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner technically because he stops striding and Glides the last few feet before he hits leushin he’s not technically skating into his opponent and technically because his right foot is so firmly on the ice he’s not technically jumping into his

Opponent but there is the loophole of the third option which is charging and in this case charging shall mean the actions of a player who as a result of distance traveled shall violently check an opponent in any manner a charge may be the result of a

Check into the boards or into the goal frame or in open ice and that’s what I mean about this straight on angle of approach and hitting from the front using the side of your body because yes he Glides but that Glide does absolutely nothing to stop

The velocity or soften this blow in any way shape or form the momentum created by all of these strides approaching contact meaningfully contribute to the violence of the check so by definition rempe violently checks an opponent into the boards as a result of distance traveled so just because he has one foot

Still on the ice at contact and just because he glided for a couple of feet just prior to contact still doesn’t automatically exempt this from the charging rule so I can very much see why the official in real time didn’t call this no head contact he glided and his

Feet were technically still on the ice but player safety should be able to see what really happened here and how easily avoidable it was but if they’re not going to f or suspend him for a match penalty for an avoidable illegal check to the Head then I can’t

See them acting too much on this play that wasn’t even called a penalty I see this as a non- hockey play that isn’t malicious putting it in my three to five game suspension category tough call would suspend Matt rampe of the New York Rangers three games for charging

In less than two weeks Matt Rempe has miltiple fights and a match penalty to his record. He received no fine or suspension for that previous hit to Nathan BastianC and now added this unpenalized hit to Ilya Lyubushkin. Lyubushkin left the game with a head injury and didn’t return.

  1. Lyubushkin was being targeted by the NYRangers in that game. There were at least two other questionable hits questionable on him during the game

  2. So if you go by the rules "Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner." , then half of what we see in these games could be construed as charging. "as a result of distance traveled" I feel like is the real issue with the wording here. What "distance"? It's totally subjective, that's gotta be some of the worst wording for a rule in the history of all sports. Who throws a check without traveling "distance", not many guys stopping to throw checks. Also "violently", REALLY??!?!!?? Let me softly brush against you to finish my check… 🙄 These are NHL rules? What 7-year old wrote that?

  3. Least power plays given in the league to the leafs but the refs have nothing against them bullshit fucking ref was standing right there just because the leafs power play is deadly that doesn’t mean you don’t make calls this is totally bias plain and simple

  4. Clean. Quit complaining about every play it’s hockey rough tough hockey. Watch the PWHL or knitting if you don’t want to watch millionaires try to take each other’s heads off. That what I expect when I pay $550 a ticket.

  5. So wouldn't Krug's a massive hit in the Stanley Cup finals a few years back be charging as well? That was like 30 strides in a violent open ice hit. He is just smaller so the impact wasn't as heavy.

  6. Should have been 2 minutes for charging, that’s it… honestly surprised to see this many soft people In the comments.. must be upset leaf’s fans

  7. He launches himself, trying to cause as much head trauma as possible. This league will suspend Raffi Torres for love taps but won't suspend this clown? 😂😂😂 This league is clearly biased, and they aren't even trying to hide it.

  8. Left his feet elbow extended into the ear hole . Back story why Reaves came out of tim hortons to seek him out .

  9. Im speaking more like fan of hockey and ref myself…i like rempe energy of playing in league first time, BUT he is new clearly overhyped and should calm down. Im in shock this wasnt called on ice during game. Very much suspendable. Its should been called 5 min major charging

  10. Dude, you have no clue about hockey count the strides he took in front of the net to the side boards it’s charging all day long he jumped out of his skates, wasn’t sure the shoulder to shoulder as you said it was head contact and boarding
You are is useless and don’t know the rules

  11. There is no argument that he jumped and this was his intention. Pause at 2.51m. It's obvious. This should have been a 5 minute major and hopefully he gets 3 games suspension.

  12. 2 minute charging penalty for sure. There should be no suspension that's ridiculous. The nhl is so soft I can't watch it anymore.

  13. It's not dirty lol he's looking straight at him, he glides and his feet only come up from momentum. Please stop. Whiny ass Leafs fans.

  14. Why was that not a charging call? How did the refs miss that? Refs are so bad this year.. every team.. most ga es there are bad or missed calls. Time for after games media scrum for these guys. There is no accountability for the refs at all.. none.

  15. Lifelong Ranger fan here but I agree with the comments. This should have been at least charging and probably boarding and match. The guy's a derelict and should be given one, maybe two more shots at playing, then banned. We don't need another Ogie Oglilthorpe.

  16. That was a clean hit. You want to see a dirty hit that 2 of the Tkachuks get away with regularly. And that’s standing with your back to an incoming player, there is no puck …not even in the area, and then when the unsuspecting player who is not even looking at Tkachuk, Tkachuk launches himself backwards into the player…and usually flattens him. I’ve seen them do it several times and never a penalty call. Remke getting suspended for that hit is ridiculous because he did everything right, and braced himself to make the hit. Otherwise how was he going to do it and protect himself…come in straight on!? That would’ve even more dangerous..for them both. If he was 5’11” and 185 not 6’7” and 250 there may not be an injury. Clean hit!

  17. The league's non-existent commitment to player safety has been demonstrated frequently this season. Like Boeing safety is seen to interfere with profitability. There is a large market for people who don't care about hockey but do like "car crashes'. The NHL is far behind the other three professional leagues in terms of US fan engagement. So violence is its one point of difference (I guess football has the violent hits too).

  18. I have a couple problems with this hit. 1) I think he was DEFINITELY charging. 2) I think he INTENTIONALLY left his feet, to increase the force of the hit, and 3) it looked to ME at least, that while not "the PRIMARY point of contact", there was what LOOKED like an elbow to Lyubushkin's head. The way his elbow kind of pushes out, and up as though he's pushing off Lyubushkin's head with the elbow. That looks like a CLEAR case of "intent to injure". But what do I know lol.

Those are the things that caught MY attention anyway. I thought it should have been a 5 game suspension, especially since there was no call on it, and he was able to play the rest of the game with no consequence by the refs.

  19. 9 days later..

Rempe is a POS, and will have a fun piece for the AHL enforcers wanting nhl jobs..
He should have a short tough career 😂😊

  20. Charging yes but as long as the NHL allows players to "finish their checks" there will be injuries like this. If the rules were changed to state that body checks can only be delivered to a player while they have the puck this would result in players not following through on an often defenseless opponent.
