A Look inside the University of Washington’s Men’s Rowing Program
Hello I’m Michael Callahan I’m the head men’s rowing coach at University of Washington and you’re here at the conover shell house this is the place it’s really a sacred and special to me and a lot all my other alumni it’s a place where dreams can be made and it’s
A place that has almost no limits and that’s the scary part but also the exciting part about the University of Washington it’s rowing program great things have happened here and great things can happen here the boys in the boat has been one of the greatest gifts to rowing our program seniors who wash
In the City of Seattle we get thousands of visitors here at the Conner Burriss shell house and the old ASUW shell house which is on the corner of the Montlake Hut we have Jill ramesses Olympic gold medal here we have Don Hughes Olympic or we have the Husky Clipper in our dining
Room we have a great pass it set the standard but it only is an inspiration of what we can achieve I mean rowing compared to the thirties it’s just booming my goal is to elevate the group and make them more mature on the race course we’re built on work work
Ethics number one we’d only just do the work we do it well we do it with passion we believe in a lot of capacity so we work out very hard you guys have a lot of a fitness rate will come down a little bit but I want you to really be
On the same legs I found that in this age level it’s a stroke that’s similar to maybe hitting singles and doubles versus trying to swing for the fences all the time like for a blade that’s very clean in the water it doesn’t produce a lot of wash you know I really
Want to have people to really maximize leverage so we think by rolling that stroke and maximizing fitness that you have a better chance of prevailing on the race of course we also believe in competitiveness we realize that competitiveness is a positive thing it makes the man or woman next to you
Better we always like to talked about force multipliers if you’re on a boat are you making the person behind you in front of you better and you carry that on to outside the boat into your real life we believe that this is a life program not just a rowing program we’re
Teaching life lessons here that you go on to the rest of your life and use teamwork hard work sacrifice working with others when we put all those things together we have alignment that’s when the magic happens
