Jack is back! How critical is Jack Quinn to the Sabres core?

Jack is back the one we like not the one we don’t like Jack Quinn returns to the ice and we have some talk some conversations about him coming up here in the locked on Sabers Podcast your locked on Sabers your daily podcast on the Buffalo Sabers part of the locked on podcast Network your team every Day Thanks for making lock on Sabers your first listen every day we are free and available wherever you get your podcast part of the lock on podcast Network your team every day today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account use the

First off if you want to watch the show and you can comment of course and uh ask a question underneath there best way to get a hold of us though of course is our locked on saers text line if you want to become a sority go to join sub text.com

Loock ons saers and you can sign up there and text back and forth with us today we have a interesting question on the text line I got some answers to read through on Jack Quinn and the reason he is the subject of today’s show is because he’s back Don Granado dropping

That bomb a little bit earlier today on the wgr morning show that I am a part of and he offered it up like he was ready to tell us I mean bad job by me not thinking to ask him if Quinn was getting closer to a return so that he could tell

Us that he was going to be back on the ice but he was he was just itching to say it and he did it himself and Quinn was on the ice and playing on a regular line so we’ll talk about that I want to talk about Quinn for the long term

Because I think he’s an interesting player to EV valuate given that he’s such an unknown but you also have to feel very excited about his potential given that he’s given you a lot of signs that that’s coming also on today’s show there was a click baai triggering Sabers Senators article written in Ottawa

That essentially claimed that the Sabers are not someone that the senator should copy but the way it was tweeted out a little triggering maybe uh I got two thoughts on that article that I’ll tell you what it says Bruce garot from the Ottawa Sun uh a little bit later on in

Today’s show you know I like to take my shots at Ottawa so I’m not going to hold back on that um before we get to all of that though Quinn back on the ice and getting a regular line full participant the Sabres called them that I don’t know

I’ve ever heard full participant in hockey it’s usually a football uh practice lingo that you hear but Quinn was on the ice and he was skating with you know his the three stoes out there I don’t mean that in a you know uh discriminatory way I think they are

Great together Dylan cousins JJ petka and Jack Quinn all together once again the best line the Sabers have had all year some amazing stats on Jack Quinn this year for that line they are not like per 60 minutes total goals scored for each line this year the highest

Scoring line with 10 goals at five on five this season are cousins Quinn PKA that’s their highest scoring line and Quinn’s only played 17 games games and still Thompson tuck and Skinner nope middle stat with uh Benson and Greenway nope none of the other combinations no other combination outranks cousins Quinn

Petka for goal scored this season and again it’s incredible given that Quinn’s been gone for almost the entire entirety of the year I really would have loved to have SE him stay healthy once he got back from that injured Achilles luckily he didn’t reinjure the Achilles um by

The way the fact that he is fully participating makes me guess that Friday against New Jersey is the most likely return date for Jack Quinn but could he play after just two practices a full one on Tuesday and then a morning skate on Wednesday you know maybe there’s a

Chance I don’t know what the injury is and if they have it told to them there’s not a great chance of reinjury if he were to get right back in the lineup then maybe we do see Quinn on Wednesday the soonest we could see him the better because I’m looking for interesting

Things to watch down the stretch here as the Sabers are now under 2% to make the playoffs and Quinn getting another 10 games under his belt uh you know could really help give some confidence uh for what his NE season next year is going to look like so good news Quinn back out

There getting some power play reps as well although I don’t know if he’ll go right back on the power play I would you know maybe they want to uh give him a you know a middling workload upon return but Quinn this season um 12 points in 17 games he has not

Played since January 27th so it’s been it’ll be exactly two months to the day on Wednesday against Ottawa and he was coming off to pretty darn good games before he got injured he had a three-point night scored a goal against the LA Kings he got an assist in San

Jose Midway through he gets injured and knocks him out for the next two months um again wasn’t the ailles lower body tend to think it was like the calf or the ankle or something along those lines but I don’t believe that we know for sure so uh Quinn down the stretch let’s

See what we get but a really positive update on him and he’s going to be an important important player for this Sabers build going forward the a good question to ask though how important is Jack Quinn because he has been a part of this team they’ve I think really missed

Him well what about Quinn a question that I asked our texter this morning when this Sabers core is at its peak Jack Quinn’s their blank best player their best their third best their sixth best get into some of those answers and my thoughts on Quinn’s ceiling coming back here on the locked

7 o’clock at KeyBank Center the Sabers return home for a five game homeand I mentioned on our last show I wanted to talk more about the Sabers the relationship with the fans where that is at the moment is it still splintered talk a little bit more about that on

Tomorrow show Jack Quinn’s return kind of hijacked uh the topic for today and that’s for good reason I mean this is this is something to feel good about there something you be interested in down the stretch and it’s a player that is maybe easily forgettable because of

The injuries this year um I know he’s kind of always been that for me I don’t really have a good answer as to why but I definitely don’t think of Quinn right away when I’m thinking of the Sabers core when I’m thinking of their most important players I mean hell on this

Show maybe a month ago a little less than a month ago I went through like okay who is a part of the Sabers core and if you go back and listen to that episode I don’t think I mentioned Jack Quinn one time and that’s wrong to do I

Mean again I don’t know why I’m doing that personally maybe you might if you’re doing the same thing maybe you know why maybe it is just the injury front but I think I was doing that even before um I don’t know what it is because he’s got all the chops to be one

Of the best forwards on this team when they are at their best when they are hopefully a consistent playoff team and Hell a Stanley Cup Contender at some point I think Quinn has the ability to be one of their best players on a team like that I mean this year it’s only 17

Games so you know take it a little bit with a grain of salt but points per 60 Minutes at five on five this year number one on their team with 2.97 almost three points for every 60 Minutes of ice time that he gets at even strength it’s Jack

Quinn I mean the next closest on that list he’s at 2.97 and again no limited sample JJ petka 2.37 Alex tuck 2.28 middle stat 228 Skinner 225 Thompson 164 I mean we are talking about a massive gap between uh between Quinn and some of these other guys um shooting percentage

18% at five on five like some of his numbers in a limited amount of time listen you know you might you might say I kind of want to throw that away because it’s only 17 games but I will give Quinn this you might think it was

Harder for him in those 17 games that the numbers that he had are even more impressive than than otherwise because he was coming back from an Achilles injury he did not have a preseason he did not have a training camp he did not have a long ramp up to when he got back

Into action he got in there a lot colder than his teammates and he still had production like that so I was very impressed with him earlier in the year I thought that he’s looking to me like a player that is becoming a lot more more than I would have thought he was when

They drafted him when they drafted him and if you remember back that was a pick that not a lot of people like and I take a lot of my cues from the guys that are in the know on the NHL draft that are watching these prospects day in and day

Out and a lot of those people thought the Jack Quinn pick was a reach Now Kevin Adams did not his analytics Department did not so they picked him above Marco Rossi which was a controversial decision at the time and they have been rewarded in that I think

Because Quinn at the time was thought of as all right this guy is going to be a goal score he’s got a great release he’s got a great one-timer he’s got that little tow drag Snapper that you’ve seen him pull off in the slot a bunch of

Times for the Sabres he was doing that at Juniors but not a fully well-rounded player overall and then when I see Jack Quinn I see a guy that can penalty kill that made a decent defensive impact I see a guy that does have that shot but I

See a guy that has a lot of great offensive capabilities his hands are there I think his ability as a playmaker is on display and that’s not something that I would have thought that he was going to be a great player at and I

Think I see it in there for him to be a big assist guy um I see a well-rounded hockey player with Jack Quinn and a dangerous one in that that they could have used all season along shooting at 13.5% in just those 17 games I think

Quinn is definitely primed to be in the top six for this team for for eternity as long as he’s here um I think I’d be surprised if he wasn’t that player for them long term so but that leads to the question like well okay what’s the ceiling because again he’s forgotten

About who do we mention right at the top guys they’re going to be counting on for years Tage comes up and cousins of course because they’re the centerman and Tuck comes up and I think Zack B has thrust himself into that conversation of course sometimes the other prospects

Petka well what about Quinn what’s Quinn’s ceiling what is Jack Quinn on a Sabers team that someday is great is he a lower level top six guy is he the fifth or sixth guy in the top six or is he is he on the ice you’re down one in a

Playoff game I know playoff game imagine that down one in a playoff game with the goalie pulled in the final minute is Jack Quinn on the ice is Jack Quinn on the ice right now because I might want to think he is I might want to think that he is going to

Be one of those top four forwards I mean that’s the exercise right for that specific scenario you get your three forwards and an extra skater and two defenseman I’d assume you got four forwards out there I think Quinn is one of their four best forwards and I I

Think he might already be that once he gets healthy um that was the question I posed to our texter and a lot of the answers I got I saw anywhere from second to sixth no one had him lower than six so I’m glad about that because I would

Have a strong disagreement with anyone that says he’s not going to be a top six guy but second third um hard to say is I mean obviously one t said hard to say since he got injured pre-injury it’s a second or third thirdd fourth um not

Necessarily core yet though I guess um I guess I guess third is where I would land I think he’s probably below Thompson I i’ still might want to say he’s below Thompson um one thing I’ll mention about Tage very quickly here and maybe we’ll talk more about this in the

Future um I’ve been wondering about his skating and how easily he gets taken off the puck and we’ve all been wondering if he’s been injured Granado told me and Jeremy white this morning that Tage has been dealing with more injuries than people know and he specifically

Mentioned a back injury that he missed a game with earlier in the year so I know we already knew that there was a back thing for a minute but the fact that he that he thought to mention that even here late in March back kind of makes

Sense I think for Tage if he’s got a back injury that would explain away a lot of how easily he gets taken off the puck and why his skating looks so poor his balance looks so poor I mean he might be unbalanced because he doesn’t

Feel the strength to put a lot on his back so that’s a guess but I think Tage at his best is still this team’s best forward right now I might be willing to say Zack Benson is number two I I think I’m thinking that highly about Benson

Right now and then I think the three guys that are linemates cousins Quinn petka any of the three pick your favorite I think I would listen to any of those three being your third guy and even your second guy if you don’t think

Is high of Benson as I do um so I might feel okay picking Quinn number three above uh PKA and cousins again it’s really close there might not be no need to really debate the three especially if they’re going to play together forever so either way however you look at it I

Think Quinn is a integral part of this team going forward I’m very excited to see him for a full season I hope that he’s able to pull that off because you know if he gets another injury play deer under his belt next year then we’re going to be wondering about a derailed

Career so next year staying healthy is vital for him um and staying on the ice because they needed his goal scoring they needed him on the power play all year long if you got a thought on Quinn for that question let me know what you

Think uh and you can do that at locked on saers or on text line you can sign up at join sub tex.com loock on Sabers okay when we come back Sabers and Senators Wednesday night 7 o’clock there was an interesting article written comparing the Sabers and the senators from Bruce

Gat of the Ottawa Sun I want to read a pie some of that article to you and I got some thoughts on a on a team in a city that just always is the most annoying fan base social media uh base that you’ve ever seen in the NHL maybe

Even in sports uh get to that when we come back on the locked on Sabers podcast we are presented by FanDuel Sportsbook FanDuel Sportsbook say goodbye to busted brackets I my bracket was Dead on Arrival from the first couple of days uh FanDuel lets you bet on every game of the tourney whether

You’re in you’re betting on an big upset or a one seed it’s time to go dancing on America’s number one sports book right now new customers get $200 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins it’s 200 bucks to use on point spreads money lines you

Can even pick who’s going to win it all with the future just visit fanduel.com locked on and bet on college hoops until they cut down the Nets all right wrap things up here on the locked on Sabers podcast the Ottawa Suns Bruce garot wrote an article on Tuesday that triggered some saber fans

And you know what on first approach I’m scrolling through Twitter seeing what’s going on I’m looking for my wide receiver bills content and oh what’s this Bruce garot the Ottawa Senator shouldn’t take any lessons from the Buffalo Sabers okay don’t like how that looks Ottawa triggers me they are my you

Know they are where I get illogical I’ll I’ll say it right up front I I can’t stand Ottawa and it’s not even necessarily the team anymore I mean of course I hated that team when I was a kid it is just the most insufferable fan base ever I don’t understand them at all

Why they are so insufferable about every little thing at every point of the year it could be about Jake Sanderson and Owen power comparisons in July and Ottawa is going to drive you nuts with saying just the dumbest stuff you’ve ever seen in your life so the Senators

Okay shouldn’t take any lessons from the Sabers who who first look is what who are the Senators to say that listen I I could say that about my team but who are you Ottawa you got your own playoff draw to worry about you you’re not the model

Of success in the NHL although I will say and I’ll throw this out here for today’s Sabers droughty that the Ottawa Senators today Sab droughty Sabres are uh the first longest playoff drought of course with 13 Seasons about to be Ottawa is about to go to Seven Seasons

And if Detroit makes the playoffs Ottawa will have the second longest playoff drought in the NHL first versus maybe upcoming second longest droughts in the league and yet Ottawa has 21 playoff wins since the Sabers last playoff game 21 they’ve played 40 plus playoff games they’ played half a season’s worth of

Playoff games since the Sabers last were in it it’s how big the Gap is between one two and three uh at the moment so Ottawa okay I’m not going to lie read through some of this piece like is there anything really that there that Bruce is saying that’s wrong uh Senators need to

Look no further this from the article than across the ice during the national anthem Wednesday if they want to get a firsthand look at what this franchise needs to avoid poised to be officially eliminated from the National Hockey League playoffs for the seventh consecutive season with only 12 games

Left the Senators will face off against the Sabers at KeyBank Center and then host the rebuilding Blackhawks on Thursday the Sabers will miss the playoffs for the 13th straight spring when the final buzzer sounds this year there’s talk of general manager Kevin Adams coach Don Grado both on the hot

Seat with the club sending six points out of a wild card spot okay time out real quick uh problem number one this has nothing to do with the point of the article though there is no talk that Kevin Adams is on the hot seat now there’s talk of whether or not Granado

Is but it tends to be more and more he’s not really on the hot seat Adams is not on the hot seat I don’t know where that is said anywhere nobody is talking about Adams being fired this summer at all continuing though Sabers have had three GMS Adams botell Murray in that stretch

Plus eight head coaches the club has assets Dalene power Thompson cousins UPL and it’s trying that it’s trying to build around but Adams hasn’t been able to find the right fit to get this team to the next level and as a result many wonder if he’ll get another chance again

Time out no one is wondering that he’s going to get another chance you might not like that he’s gonna get another chance Adams is getting another chance continuing with the article of course changing the GM would gives someone else another excuse to lose for a few years

So maybe the Sabers will stay the course yes uh the Senators are also at a Crossroads as they prepare to miss the playoffs again and continuing on about Ottawa a little bit um senior VP Dave pulin are looking if they’re looking for a blueprint on how not to proceed the

Sabers are a shining example I guess I I continue to read a little bit through this there’s no concrete Central Point like what you don’t want to copy so if you come across this article just know there’s no real reasoning or deducting like what is it that you don’t

Want to copy I mean I could tell you I could tell you what you don’t want to copy don’t be this patient don’t be this patient now to be fair Ottawa hasn’t been that patient I mean they made the Alex to breakout trade last year they signed Claude jaru they signed Jonas

Corpus solo they signed terce senko before this season like they take their swings they don’t act patient so but that would be my answer don’t be in Uber patient like the Sabers have been don’t be that and don’t stick with coaches and GMS longer than you should I mean I

Guess that’s what the article is saying without actually saying it um because you know hey you don’t be like the 13-year playoff drought team okay sure of course who who’s here to argue that but if you want to really break down what not to copy I mean that the stuff it’s

The inaction it’s the lack of Trades it’s the lack of swings in free agency um settling for the youngest team in hockey year after year if the Sabers do that again I mean that’s what you want to point to um you know again the overall sentiment of the article though

When you read it or you see it as a saber fan is Ottawa who are you to talk going on the Sabers have actually finished this is going to be the third year in a row the Sabers will finish above the senators in the if the Savers

Have one thing going for them it’s that they could be Ottawa because Ottawa takes their swings Ottawa has bad contracts ottawa’s traded picks in prospects they’ve gone in and they’re nine points below the Sabers okay you want to feel positive about the Sabers right now I’ll talk with a little bit

More about about this tomorrow if you’re looking for something to feel hopeful about for the Sabers just think of it this way the inaction has led to this a was taking their swings and they stink and they’re worse than the Sabers are the Sabers haven’t even really taking

Taken swings and three years in a row they’re going to be better than the Senators that’s got to feel bad if you’re Ottawa and I guess that can make you feel a little bit okay if you are a saber fan so don’t take any lessons for

The Sabers okay I guess but again you had a triggering article that was maybe designed to bait saber fans in and then there was no real Point made about what you don’t want to copy so interesting article uh just to kind of compare the two teams but again I’m I’m looking for

More um what is really the thing that you don’t want to do if you’re Ottawa my thoughts on the Senators very quickly before we get out of here I I think if you’re Ottawa you just kind of gotta run it back and if you’re Ottawa they’re

Kind of going down the Jack eel path I think with Brady kachuck they are maybe at year four of the eel timeline they are at the point where we got with eel which was what two years before they traded him and that was other markets and National blogsites writing and

Rumoring hey what would it take to get Brady kachuck out of Ottawa what would it take Jack I to get Jack eel out of Buffalo and for a year you had saber fans and now you have Ottawa fans doing the same thing with K Chuck just screaming at those people they’re never

Trading them stop talking about it they’re never ever trading them usually what comes after that are is more serious worrying about whether or not the guy is going to ask to be traded and if I’m Ottawa that’s where I’m at next year I’m thinking the same and this is

Not a good place to be I mean obviously the Sabers it went horribly wrong maybe that’s the blueprint you don’t want to copy don’t let your star asked for a trade because you can’t get him near the playoffs that’s what you don’t want to have happen that’s the

Point that needs to be made here that’s what you don’t want to copy and if you’re Ottawa you know Brady kachuck the C he is the captain of the team but so was eel he’s in year three of a seven-year contract around the same time eel was at

This point and he’s got four years left on his contract and he doesn’t have a full no movement Clause until after next season so he has trade flexibility if you’re Ottawa you better be good next year because the noise is going to turn get turned up from like a four to an

Eight and then an 11 on Brady kachuck trade rumors getting rid of your best player because that guy is going to be 25 then next year’s offseason 26 years old and he’ll have experienced no winning whatsoever I don’t think he’ll ever get traded to the Sabers in division like that but Ottawa better

Start winning or else I think they’re best players is going to want out at some point all right time out or uh that’s it well timeout for the day I guess uh that’s going to do it for us today here on the lock on Sabers podcast it’s Sabers and its Senators on

Wednesday at 7 o’clock one of those opponents that I will always be invested in because I just want to see the Sabers beat them badly even though the game doesn’t really matter for either team you got Red Wings at capitals Tuesday night so I don’t know who you rot for

It’s just but probably a playoffs uh game uh for the two teams whoever wins the game game is going to get a giant increase in their playoff odds so really nothing can go right for the Savers tonight on the out of toown scoreboard unless you know I guess if you get

Regulation for the Caps that is probably what you would prefer that’s going to do it for us today here on the lock do Sabers podcast thanks for making us the first listen every day part of the lock do podcast Network your team every Day

Jack is back! Jack Quinn returns to practice after two months away due to injury. Sneaky Joe talks when Quinn could return, who he is skating with, and how good his numbers were pre-injury.

How high up does Quinn rank in the Sabres core? Could he be the best forward on a great Sabres team? Plus, a weird article comparing the Sabres and Senators.

  1. I think Quinn was sorely missed this year. But in the end… I really want Granato FIRED still. He is the root of the issues IMHO along with Adams making many many mistakes in judgment.

  2. Playoff game and last minute with the goalie pulled with Don Granato as head coach? Nah that's prime time for a Zemgus appearance.

  3. The Sabres will get hot, be a few points out, then will blame injuries for why they came up short.

  4. Ottawa is a Dumpster fire! Bruce Garrioch is THE WORST writer in Canada ! He is always late to the party and constantly WRONG! Also hes the biggest HOMER this side of Jack Edwards from NESN Boston.

  5. The problem with Quinn and the rest of this teams “Top Six Forwards” is there are no difference makers. They have sone guys that can score some goals and make a nice play here and there. They don’t have a single big impact player. TT looked like that player for a short while. He is regressing back to the mean. Adams needs to bundle up some of these assets and forwards and trade for an impact player.

  6. Quinn is vital. He’s cheap for at least a couple more years. As is Benson. As will Savoie be. Cheap, cheap cheap. Middlestadt was too expensive, exactly as Reinhart was a couple years earlier. Let the other GM’s figure out how to pay multiple stars good enough to win Stanley Cups. Kevyn Adams can’t afford to find enough of them. Even after he dumped Eichel’s $10 Million. In fact the Avs are already seriously considering signing Middlestadt long term, after he’s only played
less then 10 games for them.

  7. Idk about after the 2nd big injury but i think Quinn might be the best forward on the sabres. Tragic that we didnt have him most this year

  8. No team should ever copy the Sabres. 13 years with no playoffs is a complete failure from the owner to the front office coaching and players. This is why the Sabres are the joke of the league and no one wants to come here.

  9. That's great to hear ,he's a verry important piece of this Stanley cup puzzle verry important When's Sammie back?

  10. I do not think it's fair to call jack quinn& Samuelsson fragile…. The injury.
That put quinn would have sidelined any player in the league. As far as Samuelson ghe was.
Primarily the only player playing physical hockey for a long stretch. And it's easy to get hurt when you play hard, especially when you're going app against 2 or 3 guys at a time.

  11. We wouldn't be in this situation that we are in if we would stop copying Ottawa, are soles?( It's called sarcasm)😅😊

  12. I don't get where all the Benson love is coming from in the last two episodes. From my eye test he's invisible on the wall. Also, not quite sure how he is in the conversation for being one of the best players in the team already. I get he's only 18 but has only shown average speed on the ice and mediocre production. Guess I have to see it to believe it.

  13. As long as Greenway on the team, either Peterka or Quinn will never be a top six forward because the coaches son is always going to have to play the most
