You guys evaluate this trade like the Sharks had any business signing or keeping Hertl. What good does he bring (besides kissing babies in the locker room) to a rebuilding team that is half a decade away from contention? What teams can possibly take on Hertl's contract? He had a no move clause as well. All of that in consideration makes this absolutely a great deal for San Jose.
Those last two years of Hertl's contract when he will most likely be declining due to age are when the Sharks will be getting back into contention. Mike Grier doesnt want to be saddled with Hertl's full contract just as the Sharks ate trying to put a good team together. The timeline fits perfectly. Grier is doing a good job. Doug Wilson left him in a difficult situation with all those bad contracts.
So he’s going to be Nico Sturm with a little more offense up side… K (so Grier did Hertl a solid)
How does he compare to Filip Bystedt? If he has a similar projection, how do both of them fit on the same team?
That was San Jose’s last retention slot btw. I’m a die hard San Jose fan and this was truly like salt In an open wound. I’m sure there was better deals for him out there.
Sharks in the near future will have a lot of cap space. I don’t think that any team offered more. Sharks looking for more size and physicality.
Hertl had a no move clause. That limited a lot of what Grier could do.
This move feels like a gamble from Mike Greir to solidify the Shark's chances of drafting 1st overall this year and next year. I think that in part of the perceived return. But idk. I keep going back and forth how I feel about this trade. Return is certainly underwhelming. I like Edstrom though.
