Black N’ Gold Hockey Podcast Ep. 351 Post NHL Trade Deadline Live Stream
All right what’s up good morning everybody uh Boston Bruins fans hockey enthusiasts uh black and gold hockey podcast is back we’re doing a 2024 uh post NHL trade deadline special uh we did we did a a preview on Thursday night which was uh a lot of fun and we
Took Friday off to absorb everything that happened in the in the NHL Hockey World and now we’re here doing a a little wrap up and and kind of thoughts about about what happened yesterday and and what’s going to happen with the Boston Bruins in the future as the
Playoffs uh continue but we do have a a Full Slate of folks that we’re going to talk to today and obviously my my co-host down below me Dom Tiano is in the house Dom how we doing buddy uh doing good somebody’s got to buy me a Mac because I had to reboot uh
Because Windows decided to do an update so anybody want to buy me a Mac go ahead and send me one I’ll put it on the company credit card how’s that bud that works down below uh right next to Dom is our own b& Productions uh Boston Bruins
Writer Jason cook Jason how we doing bud thanks for joining I’m good no thanks for having me I’m excited uh talk Bruins this morning absolutely and above him is uh Parker McLean and he is from on the Fly that is a YouTube channel uh that that is all about hockey and Parker does
A great job talking about the Bruins but and other teams around the NHL AP parka thank you very much for for reaching out on on the Twitter X machine and I haven’t even met you didn’t even follow you and I just did my background check
And I said this guy’s pretty cool so and he’s a Bruins fan from Ontario there’s really cool people from Ontario I got to be nice because Dom’s right below and he whacks people that say if you don’t speak highly of Ontario so uh Parker thanks so much for for joining us Bud
Yeah thanks for having me on really appreciate it all right and uh and plug that plug that uh on the Fly uh do is what what what you need to do to grab some more subscribes yep for sure all right um so I don’t know uh it’s kind
Of a lackluster type of uh feeling for the Boston Bruins and and and the fans um I thought that the bees would probably take a bigger swing because of the rumors we took uh we heard and nothing really happened that way but it kind of brought me back to my thoughts
Tom um midseason when we were talking about um you know adding back then and I said that they’ll probably end up doing two moves and add some kind of physical Factor it kind of worked out the way it did but um let’s go to Dom first and
Actually I want to say that this is episode 351 and it is brought To Us by the BBL Lux Transportation Company if you need a safe and reliable ride to and from the airport or a Boston Bruins game Providence Bruins game main Mariners game um please call
Ation vehicle and uh and safe and reliable service to and from where you need to go so we got people already in here Jeremy’s in the house what’s up he says off the cuff question Dom can you trade retained salary spots no no I didn’t think
So all right so what do we think about the trades um obviously Patrick maroon comes to the Boston Bruins from the Minnesota Wild um defenseman Andrew Peak uh comes from the Columbus Blue Jackets um what do we what are our thoughts on these additions obviously it’s a physical presence but um what are
Our thoughts go ahead Dom well um maroon obviously was there for uh to be the Lich replacement even though he’s a month away um so they Don Sweeney accomplished that I know that they had a lot of talks regarding uh Jacob Middleton um couldn’t get a deal done there
Um Peak was sort of a fallback like I I know he’s getting a lot of flak from Bruins fans but uh if you can get the Andrew Peak from two years ago uh I I think they’ve done well here Um you know he he’s a shot blocking machine uh physical guy uh sort of a lighter Jacob Middleton um you know things didn’t work out in Columbus this year for him did he had two new coaches uh with the Babcock failure there in the off season
Uh um so different systems didn’t fit in and um you know people are complaining about the cap hit uh it would have been the same cap hit that Jacob Middleton had but you have two more years control of him so if they get what he was two years
Ago good deal and it’s not like they really gave up that much I people are flipping out about the third round pick it’s like uh as of today 8% of third round picks make up NHL players so um you know it is what it is Kevin chiming into your your your discussion there
Dom yeah well that’s Kevin take it for where it’s coming from uh Jason what are your thoughts on uh Andrew Peak or Patrick Maron um I think just in general I’m actually writing a column about this for B&G this morning um I think Sweeney did the best
With what he had I mean we we all kind of knew coming into this year that the cuper was empty he emptied all these first round picks trying to load up last year rightfully so I mean he had to do that to make a run for the cup obviously
That fell short and they’re kind of paying the price for being this aggressive at the deadline over the past couple years you know getting the Charlie Coy’s the hampus lind Holmes eventually they were going to have to pay the price for that I think that’s kind of what they ran into this year
But I think in general I I I think like Dom said I think it’s nothing crazy maroon fills the void Lich was going to was GNA do um and Peak kind of add some depth to the back end I think especially with forbort going on long-term injured
Reserve um that’ll be a solid piece there in the back end um to help toughen it up a little bit but like you said though Mark I was expecting them to kind of do something a little bit more um but all in all I think I think I think
People are going to hate on Sweeney for this and thinking that he didn’t go full far enough but I think with what he had I I think he did a pretty solid job yeah uh Parker um how about your thoughts on uh these two coming into the the system
Now as we approach the we got like 18 17 games to go in the in the upcoming playoffs but also if you could add some details about how these guys came here and what what was the price that uh the Bruins fed yeah for sure so one of the
Big things and I gotta say right off the top here this was a great deadline in my opinion for Don Sweeney he did and he committed back to what Boston’s Boston’s really good at right they have a system in place every player that’s in the system commits to it with the exception
Of maybe panak on the on the odd night but that’s why Boston does so well they’ve only had one game so far that I’ve seen that they’ve really sort of struggled to commit to their system and they got absolutely blown out in it right so the truth is they can’t match
Up to any other team in terms of their skill look at it you have the Leafs you have every other team in that division when you look on paper are probably going to be better than them but yet they still find a way year after year to
Be the top team in the league and that comes down to the way they commit you can you can call it the culture in their system the leadership whatever it might be but it’s it’s the players they bring in that are going to play a role and
That and that’s what I think uh don Sweeney got out and got at this deadline with Andrew Peak Pat maroon the peak deal they did lose zabor obviously he sort of struggled to find his way even in Providence this year so for me it wasn’t too big of a loss uh the third
Round pick I was a little surprised with obviously the original reports had mentioned that it was a peak for zabor one for one and then the third round pick got added on top of that which was a little bit later in the day but I mean
It is what it is and I really like Peak when you have a six3 defenseman you know he he can throw it around but at the same time he’s very very mobile you know you think it’s forbert and char but he can actually move around so I
Really like the pickup for Andrew Peak and then the pat maroon deal Luke toosi was going back he wasn’t too big on my radar as well as the 2026 conditional sixth round uh which the condition is if Pat maroon plays one playoff game which it definitely starts to seem like it
Will I mean it’s really hard to keep a guy like Patrick maroon who’s been there who’s done that all the cups he won throughout his career you have that playoff experience I’d be very surprised to see the brunes not put him in as well as the signing a Parker Waters spoon
That’s one more move I don’t think we’ve talked about yet but I really really like the deal he’s fitting really nicely once again sort of going back he’s been the guy that’s played that role and and I really like to see what he’s done so
Far yeah can I can I just add to something that Parker said here in in regards to the peak trade yeah everybody was surprised when they found out the third was thrown in but but here’s the deal um they probably could have got him for a fourth round pick straight up but
They needed to move a contract and I’ll tell you why because right now the Bruins are at 49 contracts had they not got gotten Columbus to take zabor they would have been at 50 contracts and with NCAA free agency uh coming up in the next week or
Two depending on what players get AIM ated they need that contract spot how upset would people be if Colin graph for instance signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins because they let him get into a game this year to burn off a year of his entry-level contract everything is not always black
And white there’s always a gray area in in terms of the thinking and and what goes behind the deal uh so you have to take that into consideration as well that’s that’s exactly why I have this awesome knowledge below me you know that’s those are the areas that people
Don’t look at because and I’m not picking I’m not jabbing at anybody but Bruins fans are very reactionary they fire from the hip with an instant reaction of oh my God the the sky falling and this and that but they don’t take the time to look back and and
And look at those aspects of decision making and so on that what goes on internally I mean a lot of people will never know uh what goes on in a GM’s office but still these are the Avenues that have to be considered when making deals like this and running an
Organization and for me adding pat pat maroon it it it it does add that physical um awareness that we’re lacking right now especially in the postseason when it’s when it’s really needed and and and to Jason’s point he does have you know a lot of credentials in in in
Playoff experience and so on and what he can bring to a room it was tough to see Luke toporowski go the other way um but he was already down I this year was not a good year for him last year I was really really on him because he was good
He was really you know he was showing what what the Bruins you know had something when he was out in um the WL and I think was do you remember Dom was was he spoted when they were out there looking at Eli zomac um I would think so Eli
Became and he got an invite to development camp and uh he showed well like yeah to me when they signed him even to his uh AHL deal very underrated signing I I just I don’t know what happened to him this season it’s like it’s almost as if he looked at the
Boston roster and decided if I’m ever going to crack that lineup I have to change my game and he got away from everything that made him uh successful in his first year in the American Hockey League yeah yeah I know I agree um but going back to I know you know you added
A defenseman because of you know the forbert thing M possibly but it’s it’s a size Factor on both ends which I I kind of wish they would they uh we’re going to do but also when you leading up to the deadline and the rumors from cred credible people you know it’s not just
Somebody throwing [ __ ] against the wall but um you know it was you know Chris Johnson I’ve put out there that there were a three- team trade that could that was being talked about um moving money of Jake de Bros down to Pittsburgh Jake gensel goes to Vancouver and then
Vancouver possibly flips uh Elias lolm to Boston that was kind of like what I was thinking about that they were going to do would they be able to do it MoneyWise I’m not totally sure I know next year they have that available cap to make anything happen but that that was kind
Of the move that I was kind of gravitating to they’re like wow they’re really gonna you know he’s really gonna go for it um you know a second time in a row with a big swing for a a playoff run that I’m still skeptic about you know I
Really want the Boston Bruins to make the uh the playoffs absolutely I think they’re going to I don’t think they’re going to fall that far off the planet but is this a team that’s going to get you into the second round remains to be seen you know on paper right now
For me it says no but anything could happen when when the uh the postseason starts and and the season change and you know we get down and dirty but it’s not going to be easy with the lineup that we have currently but you kind of understand that from a GM perspective as
Well because you’re not only trying to win for the guys this year that have that have been one of the better teams in in the National Hockey League but you’re also planning for your future Don Sweeney didn’t leverage anything here or or mortgage I’m sorry wrong words mortgage anything low rise still here
Lysell all the prospects that are not highly ranked when you’re looking at it from a National Hockey League level but they’re still good assets to have in the develop ing deps and I think next year watch out for this Boston vnds team next year with it with some with about 20
Some odd million dollars in cap space think this team could be a real threat for that longer playoff run more set up um with younger Talent you know yeah for sure and I think one of the things just just to your last point about whether you think the burns can
Make it you know it brings me back to the international hockey because I W I cover that I watch a lot of that and one of the big things each and every year is you have the big bad Americans against the the Canadians who seem to never have
The same level of talent as the Americans sure this past Juniors was a little different but the years before that it was always the Americans have all the big prospects same thing with the swedes but yet their commitment to their team structure is one of the biggest things that allows them to make
That next step to beat the Americans I consider the matchup coming up to be the Leafs and the Bruins right you have the Americans and the Canadians and in my opinion I’m still favoring the Bruins in this matchup just because we’ve seen it time and time again the Leafs play for
Themselves right they’re a team that is going to make mistakes and the way Boston plays through their structure is one of the is probably one of the biggest advantages that they have because they capitalize on each and every mistake that the Leafs make and you know we’ve seen that with the last
Two games they’ve played against them this past week every mistake that the Leafs made seem to go in the back of the Leafs net so if Boston can continue to stick to that structure and these moves at the trade deadline just reinforce that I think there’s no reason why the
Bruns can’t beat the Leafs talk about that that Leaf game on Thursday this is kind of off the Sidetrack a little bit but Don Sweeney mentioned yesterday in his presser that that game and kind of the more recent games um after they went through that little skid might have kind of changed
His mind in terms of decisions he had to make at the deadline um and I I just think that that Toronto game especially um Toronto started pushing him around early physical obviously the cross check into Maran I I really credit the Bruins for the way they responded in
That game they didn’t back down um they pushed that that physicality Charlie Co was running around out there laying the body um and I think that’s what this team was missing a little bit um so hoping you know bringing these guys like Maroon and Peak hopefully the Bruins can
Now start to be the team that starts that physicality I thought Toronto brought it and Bruin the Bruins responded um I think to make a Deep Run I think the Bruins you know need to be the big bad Bruins and need to go in and start that physicality
Um but I this it’s a general question do you do you think recent play has maybe suggested to Don Sweeney what to do or was he looking at the big picture still and looking at what they need I I don’t I think Don Sweeny was just giving the media
Something to write about because I think you’re probably right you know they have a plan uh and their plan is not this season it’s beyond this season they weren’t going to do anything for this season that didn’t affect next season and and that’s the way they went into
Trade deadline uh that’s probably why they didn’t pull the trigger on a jake de Brusque deal um you know he was getting a lot of calls on on De Brusque it it wasn’t him initiating it but he was getting calls and if we’re to believe that rumor deal
With Vancouver and Pittsburgh uh we know he was willing to but he was getting something in return for Beyond this year um in the hopes that he he could have uh extended uh linol after after the trade so you know I I think it’s just talk to
Fill in the blanks and give people like us something to talk about um you know he’ll try to resign de Brusque like he’s been trying to do for the last five months but it’s going to have to come in at his price not uh not Jak to bruss price
Yeah um you know talking about Jake debrus I was actually shocked that he wasn’t moved but that also tells me that the the organization is interested in in possibly keeping him he can still be an asset later on at the end of the season possibly be flipped for some some draft
Capital that the Bruins need but Jim Montgomery isn’t really hounding him like a player that’s that’s struggling he’s getting top minutes I’m I’m watching Natural stat trick on a regular basis and I’m seeing Jake de bruss getting his average minutes game by game by game which tells me that the coach is
Allowing him to fight through it and also in in a reality spec to the fans out there that give him a hard time if he’s earning that many minutes he’s doing impactful things beyond the score sheet you know and I don’t know I yes points goals assists and everything
Are very important especially in the playoffs when we need a player like him to get hot because he is a he can be an offensive threat uh you know especially when you’re losing a guy like like berson and cre and so on guys like to Bros need to step up no matter what
Season it is but hopefully that happens and maybe maybe that’s what the Boston Bruin are doing right now is they’re looking at it and say okay let’s see what we have in the playoffs and then we’ll make the drastic decision ision on do we have to get rid of this player for
Draft capital or is this somebody we’re going to want to bring back for for another couple of years yeah you you’ve got to re really respect the position uh that Sweeney has put his team in for next year and let me just give you a quick markup so you can move
Zaka to to leftwing and you’ve got zaka marshan Frederick guaranteed in the lineup next year uh down the middle you got Patra co uh beer and possibly merula on the right side you’ve got uh Pastak geeki uh Brazil loo can play the left or right side and a possibility of
Fabian lysel your top six defensemen are already locked in with Lin Holm lorai and water spoon on the left uh maoy Carlo and Peak on on the right um and of course you’ve got allmark already in net and what you bring San back for and with that lineup you still have
$20 million to do something to go out and improve it’s crazy absolutely crazy what the what the Boston Bruins can do this year and and you know what’s funny is is even though that thought crosses my mind it’s still going to be a very lean free agency in
My opinion I I I don’t see a lot of free agents that are really popping out and exciting to me right now that are not rentals right now you know that are not signed and blah blah blah you know I don’t who knows what’s going to happen
To Elias linol um I was actually shocked that that wasn’t a sign in trade but somebody wants to pay out assets like that for a rental go ahead I mean we did it we did it with bzi last year so um anything that you guys want to
Talk about and also I gota I gotta keep up with the chat I know we’re we’re missing some stuff so you guys have any questions or anything like that keep them coming um let me see a lot of deas Kate that’s all right uh all right so um I about lenus alar um
And I keep saying his name wrong and I’m sorry about that but um are we are we shocked that he didn’t get moved and how about the rumor and and obviously and I have the transcript from from yesterday’s press conference where several times it was clearly known that
He did not want to leak anything to Media um but people were asking if it was true where did it go and this and that and it was a lot of hush hush but uh did do you have a feeling all the the panel everybody we’ll go around we’ll
Start off with dom but do you have a feeling that lenius was probably not going to be a bruin past yesterday there were discussions um you know there was a reported uh deal that allar Nick going to the LA Kings um my contact in La vehemently
Denies there was a deal in place now there may have been discussions and Sweeny approached allmar and said no I’m not waving for LA but there was never a proposed finalized deal uh waiting for allmark to okay it now that’s not the way negotiations go you don’t work out a deal and then
Approach the player and say are you willing to wave you appro approach the player first and say look they’re interested is it worth me carrying on these discussions uh and would you wave to go there so he probably nixed it at that point but there was never a done deal
Yeah Jason go ahead um I think it it kind of goes back to am I surprised that he was that he wasn’t traded no I wasn’t surprised at all um I think it goes back to last year in the playoffs obviously they decided to go with allmark um and
Sweeney was asked about this yesterday whether they deci whether they want to switch the goalies in the playoffs are not alternating um last year they went with they went with omark might have been battling an injury kind of later in the series and obviously you go to swan
In the seventh game and that’s just an impossible position to put him in I’m I’m interested to see what they decide to do this year obviously swan has in my opinion had the way better year his stats tell that too um are you gonna alternate them in the playoffs if if you
Do and if that’s the plan I I definitely can see why they would want to keep allar but honestly if if if if they if they think Swan’s their guy and and they think Swan’s the guy that can win them a playoff series maybe moving allmark might have
Been beneficial for you to get something from him um especially if you know that you’re confident you can lock up swam this summer I think it all comes down to that personally I I think Sweeney what did Sweeney say Mark in the in the conference when he was asked that
Question what they plan to do in the the playoffs oh I don’t know I I was just dodging all of his uh we don’t leak anything in the media yeah because I know Montgomery at the beginning of the Season he didn’t really give a definitive answer to it I think he said
He was open to alternating them in the playoffs obviously that’s too far away they’ll probably make that decision upcoming but I think if if they know Swan’s the guy and then they know they want to go with him in the playoffs trading allmark I think could have been a viable option for
Them yeah but a big risk and I gue Parker is going to agree with me uh you don’t trade almark until you have Swan locked up right that’s a good point so I think they only could have done it if they were very confident but obviously Anything Can Happen Swan might just be
No his price might be too high so yes it it definitely is very risky for them to do that so that’s probably why maybe they didn’t um or maybe those reports were true and all all Mark Nix it but I think it’s definitely interesting either
Way Parker um and I think one more thing to add is that they got a culture right now right you see it after every game the goalie hugs whatever it might be there’s clearly that culture in the locker room that revolves around line of solark as well right so I think by
Getting rid of him you have the potential to shake up the locker room in a way you don’t want to do right before a big playoff run whereas if you think about it in like a year from now right where you go into his final year that
Off season maybe the devils are still looking for a goenda two goalies but they’re still basically the same level as they were before I think at the end of the day if when you look at what Almer can bring back that might be when you trade him at the start of a year
Where you know your your locker room isn’t already built around that culture around that team atmosphere I and you don’t want to you don’t you never want to shake something up midseason right because it’s it’s clearly working for them they’re I believe first or second
In the league as of today um and they’re like they’re right around that cusp right and they’ve played good hockey they just haven’t found the finish that they need to they can’t hold on they couldn’t hold on to the lead in the last probably 10 15 games since the All-Star
Break and that’s really been their biggest problem but at the same time it’s working they’ve held the lead in most of those games they’ve they’ve been up and they’ve played some pretty good hockey it’s just they’ve had a problems with some consistent efforts right after the trade deadline which I mean that
Happens right that happens from Team to team you struggle coming off of a long break but you know they’re playing good hockey now we’ve seen in the last two games against the Leafs especially you know it’s those are two tough games against a really really skilled team but
They’ve looked like the better team in all of that so I think when you think about that in terms of their culture it it doesn’t make sense a lot of sense to to mess it up right now but there is an argument to be made in this upcoming off
Season yeah and that’s where I want to go right here because um this Buster Keys person and I just love the word buster because uh that was my first Boston Terrier um you can get more for allar come summer anyways is that true Mr Dom
Um because I think so I I well really it’s hard to say because a team like New Jersey who is battling for their playoff lives may have overpaid now just for for that that opportunity to get into the playoffs uh so it depends on the team and the
Situation like for instance if Edmonton gets knocked out in the first round um they may overpay in the offseason because Skinner wasn’t able to to get it done for them in the in the playoffs whereas if uh New Jersey misses uh you know are they willing to go high in the
Offseason um probably not so it depends on the on the teams that you’re negotiating with yeah and and for me allmark midseason didn’t make much sense uh because we said it on on Thursday night in our pre uh NHL trade deadline program Dom that the in goal is your strongest asset
Right now moving forward you know and your defense is starting to get better and better and more physic physical and playoff ready I’ve seen a big increase in Charlie makavo game you’re seeing playoff Ray War kind of style out of him more aggressive more hitting and so on
That’s the type of things you really want to see for a player like him in the postseason um concerning allar and and Swan yeah I mean Swan’s obviously you know you auditioning for a good deal probably a starting role deal because I honestly don’t think that alach will be
Around possibly after this next off season or uh after The Following season I don’t think that they can bring him back without and then you’re gonna your dep’s probably goingon to get ruined by uh busy leaving and dph will leaving I don’t think they’re GNA wait around
Another two years so something’s got to give I mean it’s it’s a bottleneck and goal right now but right now it’s just roll with what we have with the strongest and going into the off season with a your head and think about what you want to do do you want to move
Allmark for possible picks and a player that could be done to try to replenish the prospect pool um you know I’m not I’m not I’m not dooming Gloom on the rankings that they all come up with every year from the athletic and this and that I think that there’s some
Really good players down in Providence right now and even in Maine and and worldwide that are going to come up sooner or later and and you know facilitate well but um I I wouldn’t do anything mid-season but dur in the offseason yeah if you need to
Do it you do it but um and and and in the postseason when it comes to a tandem why not give it a shot it didn’t work last year Jim Montgomery really should have pull the trigger on saying lenus lonus whatever you want to call them you’re injured you’re sitting that
That’s the coach’s job I don’t I don’t want to hear well he’s been a Workhorse all year and he deserves this opportunity to show his team and blah blah blah that he can fight through injuries and we can get and accomplish a goal I all I want to hear this year is
If you’re injured you’re sitting we need we have the depth that can come in and fill out and do what’s needed to be done so would I like to see a tandem absolutely because I’ve never seen it done really and I’m all for chaos and I think Dom sort of mentioned
This too where Swan’s coming up to the end of his contract at the end of this year right so if you were to trade all before that contract negotiation where he is eligible for arbitration where he basically let to you know decide what he thinks is valuable versus what the team
Thinks and they’ll likely side with the player as well I think you have to be very careful with not telling him that he’s the starter for the upcoming year because that would significantly increase the price that you’d have to pay for a guy like Jeremy Swan whereas
If you have say okay we’re just going to Tandem you yet again he’s probably not going to ask for as much because he’s nothing more than a a second line of a tandem right y absolutely um all right um I do want to mention we about halfway through uh 30
Minutes an hour I don’t even know what I’m saying but uh please like And subscribe uh to the YouTube channel please do that it does a a tremendous job for us to get more uh notice and so on so we really would appreciate that we’re going to be coming with a lot of
Content uh with as the postseason comes up going to be bringing on some new people uh I I’m trying to find some time to get my AHL Bruins Report podcast up and running it’s been a struggle but there’s there’s tons of content that are coming so please like And subscribe and
And interact on YouTube you know we answer a lot of questions there too oh here’s here’s one for all of us because I think what we’re this is a very interesting conversation um Buster Keys says with lysel will lysel get a shot before the season end maybe catch lightning in a
Bottle or is he not ready can I take this one I think he will oh go ahead I think he will too I think I but it’s going to be when the Bruins uh uh secure a playoff spot I know they’re going to be in the playoffs
But I think once they get that X that says that they’re in I think that that’s when you going to start to see some load Management on some of our veterans like Charlie Coyle uh Brad Maran and so on maybe even the go tenders that this is
Going to be opportunity for some guys like Brandon busy to get up get in his first NHL game give him a taste of of what it’s like and and possibly use that as as a auring method to say we want you Brandon let’s work on keeping you around
You know I know I know the kids anxious to make the league and whether it’s the Bruins or another team he’s got a dream that he wants to wants to get to and you know I I really want to see this Brandon busy the prospect stick around but um
But lysell I think will get games after they secure a playoff spot um mof could be back up it’s it’s all going to be you know later on I don’t think they’re gonna get in any anytime soon and also I would and I’m not trying to be a dink
Here but I’d also temper expectations on some of these younger prospects like lysell coming into the lineup because they’re Point producing members down in the American Hockey League this is a huge step for them these are first games for them so um you know the way some
Prospects got treated in the past like kachev and and Karan and all these guys that came up they just I don’t think they had an ample opportunity but they also got freaking hammered for it because they weren’t producing so you know I would temper expectations on
Lightning and fire and him coming in and being like a 10 a a 10 goal score in in five games or anything like that he’s just not that that type of player I think with lysel um no go ahead go ahead I was just going to say he’s still young I mean this
Kid’s 20 21 years old I think I you know now oh what’s going on yep are we losing connection with people I think delayed ah yeah we’re losing connections with people this is not good but anyway how’s this now yeah I hear you I the the big thing to watch now is
The trade deadline is over is that there is no longer a 23 man roster limit so as long as you have space you can carry as many players as you want the Bruins have just over a million bucks now so they can call up a couple of guys the problem
Is is you’re only allowed four call-ups between now and the regular season so they have to be careful on who who they bring up and and for how long hey this is for you [Laughter] um H Kevin Kevin’s always po a [Laughter] dick uh no no no that is a good point
Though Dom is is the call UPS and so on um you know that’s why I kind of have a feeling that like the last two or three games could be you know Prospect Laden um and that’s not a bad thing it’s not saying that the prospect is bad because
He’s he’s not getting a chance it’s just you know it’s still an adjustment period we still have two full years of Fabian lysell under contract so I I don’t think that we need to rush the the players I’m I’m not one that um I like a L development I think it’s very important
For pros nowadays is to at least get that one year and I I know I’m a broken record but I say I go back to Jake de Brusque when he was selected in 2015 went back to the dub and then came to uh the Bruins organization played one full
Season uh in with Providence and I think that that was beneficial to him because he had a really good rookie season and in the NHL I don’t think that he would have that year if he didn’t have time in the American Hockey League so the AHL does benefit it’s not a freaking death
Sentence like so many people think oh my God so bad um where we go to now did we talk about w thepoon we didn’t talk much about him yeah I I think that was a really good signing I think what Bruins fans is seeing what exactly that the um n Hockey
League Scouts from the Boston Bruins organization saw as well um this is the type of player Dom we talked about this several times this is the type of player that was on the New York Islanders affiliate in Bridgeport and Bridgeport and Providence would literally play each
Other 12 times out of the season and you know they play Harford 12 times they play Springfield 12 times they play all these local teams 12 times because they it it um it works with their TR schedule American Hockey League doesn’t have a ton of money to spend on travel and so
On so having Providence stay local and so on is really good not only that but it creates more practice time less travel more more practice time on the ice uh which is great for uh development because in Providence they have Mondays off Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
Saturday Sunday all work so uh but most of the time it’s practicing um but the scouts were obviously in the building to watch their own but also to watch guys that that are potential free agents and and the Bruins were circling around Parker Wilders when you became a
Free agent and signed them and I think it was a I think it was a great depth signing because you never know what you’re gonna go what he was going to do it’s a gamble at that point he’s making under a million dollars it’s a two-way Deal started off in Providence and
Worked his way up great story you know what I mean but it’s that close connection when you see somebody on the other side of the ice that is performing really well and you always have in the back of your head geez I wonder what that player would look like in my
Organization you know so we lost Dom that’s all right his Timmy Horton’s Wi-Fi isn’t working very good hey Parker you’re not on the Tim Horton’s Wi-Fi are you I I really hope not otherwise I might be the next one I know I just had to ask because
You’re also up in the uh on aial Canada area great white North that’s right that’s right the uh I think the Dunkin Donuts Wi-Fi is a little stronger oh boy now we’re getting a border battle with the copies I I don’t oppose it right all
Right um but uh uh Jason why don’t you talk about Parker wpon and his addition to the Boston Bruins I know you’ve read SE written several articles about him yeah no um I’ll even tip my cap to Andrew blin he he he pointed out earlier in the year that they should extend him
He he was spot on and um yeah know can I say can I say something yeah how funny is it how F all right all right how funny is it that Andrew wrote an article about Parker War thepoon months ago and he signed a deal and I wrote one about
Justin brazza back in early December saying he should get a a two-way signing and it happened so yeah we’re two for two so Jason write an article about a signing and and let’s get going all right let’s go for three for three I’ll think of something um yeah but but weather spoon
He he it’s it’s nothing crazy with him right like he’s not gonna go out I don’t even think he scored a goal yet um but he’s very simple he doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and on a Bruin’s back end where the mistakes have kind of been in
The air lately you know I I think makavo game has been a little little off the rails a little bit lower ey off obviously still have some work to do um but weatherspoon’s kind of that puck moving defenseman that can just kind of move the puck make a smart play Get It
Up the ice um and really I mean I’ve watched a lot of games he doesn’t make a ton of mistakes he’s a very responsible kind of stay-at-home defenseman um and like you said I think it’s a great story I think it shows that you know you can
Take a chance on a guy believe in a guy and he can come up and and make a difference at the NHL level so I think he’s perfect to just kind of stick out there when you when you need a good defensive Zone possession and I think it
Also allows depending on who they pair him with maybe pair him with a guy like makoy pair him with another offensive minded defenseman can maybe go take some chances and you know we can kind of be back there um to support him if if he needs help but I think it’s awesome and
He’s a versatile defenseman too right he is yeah no he is he’s quick it’s it’s not like he can move he there’s been a couple plays where he’s kind of wheeled the puck up The Zone and he’s made a play but at the end he kind of dishes it
Off I think he’s a little timid to go the full way on a full Rush maybe that’s from Montgomery kind of telling him to play Within the dots a little bit um but yeah no he he can move he’s skilled he has hands and I think like you said it’s
Just a great depth piece to have back there heading into the playoffs let me ask you guys a real intriguing question because I respect your opin iions when it comes to to coaching and stuff do you think that part of the Bruins issue on defense this season has been not having an actual
Coach on the bench to coach the defense like they had in the Kevin Dean days or um uh I forget his name after that came in after Dean oh um uh went to the leaps organization um anyway do you think that there’s an effect there not having that guy on the
Bench I me you can make you can make an argument for it for sure like but at the end of the day it’s it’s a new sort of generation right it’s a lot less on the actual coaches and more of it now is just in the video and because after
Every game now they sit through hours upon hours of game video right to see okay what did I do wrong here what what can I do better so at the end of the day it it would help sure to have someone also have another set of eyes like an
Objective set of eyes on it to say should probably be doing this that and that but at the same time the video crew and and and the people that are in charge of video for for the Bruins for example would also play a pretty big part in
That you know what’s funny is I I was thinking about this not too long ago um because Adam McQuade was uh seen at the uh Providence Bruins game and um and he he’s been on the bench um a time or two and I was wondering because you know obviously he’s like in Player
Development and does a fantastic job um and a great ambassador to new players that are coming in particularly ones that have some beef on them um you know I.E Jackson Edwards and so on and the Ryan mass and blah blah blah he works well with those players
So there’s a really good thing about Adam mqu and connection and I think that the Boston Bruins might be kind of breeding Adam to maybe be an assistant coach someday I don’t know if that if that ever comes to fruition or not but it kind of brought me to an area of my
Mind where it said just what Dom brought up why what would this Boston Bruins team look like particularly on the back end with a true defensive coach because right now Joe Sako is taking care of the the uh defensive duties along with the special team so I kind of gravitate to
What you’re throwing down Dom on how that message is different relayed accepted or flat out you know uh executed and sometimes this year you see players that are are you know off off their coverage a lot a lot lately you know leaving just guys out
High and dry regardless if it was a six on five or five on five or four on three it was just something’s got to be done that you need tighter coverage particularly in the in the playoffs where everything gets tighter every inch of ice is so so hard to fight for but I
Could definitely see some difference in games when you come when you hear the message from an actual defenseman and and that’s not knock on Sako or anything that he’s doing but I kind of wrote an article about the advancement of McQuade because this other teams out there that
Have legitimate jobs for new head coaches and Joe sako’s name has always been in the mix whether he gets an interview or not or or a favorite or not he’s being talked about so you know there’s always that upward rise it doesn’t happen just in players it happens in coaching as well
So just thought I’d talk about that I’d rather McQuade stayed in Player Development to be honest with you he’s doing such a good job there um especially with some of the players that are that are about to hit the Bruins over the next couple years like Jackson Edward uh chrisan kadinsky maybe
Uh Trevor countar um can’t wait you know um even Riley Duran uh with with the styles that they play uh Adam McQuade is perfect for them the Bruins have been so lucky in Player Development you know when Don Sweeney started there to Jamie Lang Lang and
Bruner and and um you know now Adam McQuade I I just want to see McQuade stay there for the the next couple of years based on the players that are coming up yeah yeah speaking of uh players and Prospects and so on uh shout out to Ryan Mel uh hopefully he feels
Better uh little sickness uh in the past few days or or last night was not able to coach last night’s game and um probably thankful he wasn’t on the bench because it was not a good showing at all but uh no hope hopefully MOJ feels better he’s a really really good guy
Always a pleasure to talk to after games um so yeah Provence did anybody catch that that action last night besides the uh awesome videos from uh Peter tenr and and Robert Char um boy did did did uh Trevor countar go after and beat the bag out of
Somebody did you see that I was gonna I was gonna watch it this morning cuz I went to the Knights game last night and uh when I saw the score I thought I’m not wasting my time yeah like yeah it wasn’t a good showing but um no I
Mean uh Trevor he’s just a oh man he’s a buzs saww to be honest with you every time that kid steps on the ice that motor is constantly rolling great on the four check hits follows through with this hits um you know him and Joey abati just they’re they’re they’re good siiz
Players and everything but you just don’t think that they have that much aggression in them but once they get on the ice it’s a it’s it’s uh it’s interesting and and there’s a guy we there’s a guy we would should talk about because uh the Bruin signed him yesterday as well is
Jo yeah and there’s another one Dom that I was looking at because because you put this information in my head all the time is that’s another contract closer to 50 which I didn’t and listen I understand the role that aate plays and it’s important in any National Hockey League
Team or or AHL team or or Co team there’s that [ __ ] stirring you know player that every team needs but I just didn’t see the immediate like we need to sign him right now to get a contract for this the remainder of this season and take a step back on
Looking at the landscape of what the NCAA might offer in free agencies because now we’re at 4 yeah I don’t I don’t get it but that’s why I’m asking you like Jason do you cover Providence as well or do you just uh do do the big
Club like are you there talking to Ryan Mel as well um I’m curious I’m curious to what you guys think because you’re there you’re talk you’re talking to to the coaches and so on so be before you do that Jason Dom Jason’s the one that got the viral video
Of um okay that’s that’s the guy I kind of started the Firestorm there so okay then um tell me what’s going on what’s the thought process within the team and the organization so that that’s the only game I’ve covered um but in terms of abate is that how you say it Abate yeah
Yep I think they just like that he can go out there and make stuff happen not necessarily on the score sheet um but like Mark said he’s a buz saww um the few the few games I have seen um that one in person and kind of checking in on
The highlights and stuff he just buzzes around and I think mu Janelle is really trying to get his players to play structured in disciplined um and he mentioned that’s what the jimm Montgomery looks for the gim Mont gomy Bruins looks for is players that aren’t
Going to go up there and run around and that’s what he mentioned on lysel is that he was in his second year of the AHL and he’s still trying to be individual at times um which I think now I I’m I want to go back down there and
And and ask him again how since then how he thinks he’s progressed because I think he’s really took those comments to heart and played a more 200 foot game for sure 180 um 180 yeah but I think that’s really what muel is trying to do with these prospects is really ready them
For the NHL and more specifically Jim Montgomery’s NHL where like Parker was hinting at it’s all about structure it’s all about staying between the lines staying between the dots um and really flourishing your offensive game from there so that’s what I would say yep par
You got thoughts on it uh not really no I’m not I’m not too familiar with this game to be honest yeah um it caught it caught me off guard like I I that one came right out of the blue I mean he’s he’s a good locker room
Guy that’s all I hear a lot about that and and those guys typically are you know um but does it does it really address the need to sign that contract for NHL time this year that’s the one thing that I was really I mean are they afraid about
Losing him because if you’re if you’re afraid about losing a player like that those are a dime a dozen those are bottom six players Grinders that that that’s just it though Mark and I you know I want to credit I think it was Mark diver that put put it out there
Yesterday um if I’m wrong I apologize to whoever it was that did but I’m pretty sure it was Mark dver who as we all know is well connected in in Providence oh yeah uh that there was another NHL team that was after a and that’s why the
Bruins signed him to to his deal yeah oh and also speaking of signing deals Luke toporowski who we talked about earlier um word is and it might be from diver too and I I can’t give appropriate credit I’m sorry um but word is that when Luke taparowsky was with the Boston
Bruins organization and playing in Providence that there was a time that the Minnesota Wild approached about signing him and I think that the Bruins negated that but there was interest there the whole time so it’s no shock that that um you know they they work together on um getting uh maroon here
And having uh tops go the other way so you know good luck on him I think he’s going to be a little closer to home I know that he’s in the Iowa area I believe um so see what happens um you guys got anything else also please hit up the oh wait a
Minute uh Jason has Ryan Mass improved um I don’t me personally I think he’s been doing really good for Maine he’s getting ice time stretching his legs being competitive being a good Pro going to the coast isn’t easy um but you know that’s what a lot of players need to do
To to fight their way through show uh your your your parent club that you you want to be in the mix you know and this and that and he’s doing what he’s he’s a good Pro but um hopefully next year he takes a bigger step in my opinion uh
Works hard with uh with um oh Adam McQuade you know and tries to get in the Providence mix more next year I think that that’s going to be in the goal over this offseason is stay in Boston work with the pros that are that live locally
Um you know absorb all that stuff and then come into training camp uh ready to to at least be a consistent player in the American Hockey League and I think that would be a huge step for him in his development and it’s not a knock it’s
Not a knock we just really have to all come together and realize we need to be patient on prospects the shiny new toy mentality and the shiny new toy Brigade needs to Halt because you know it’s just uh something that we all have to absorb and
And I think people need to curb their expectations on Ryan Mast and I’ve said this through two years now that um the offensive game he displayed with the staring staring his sting in the OHL uh is not very translatable to the Pro game uh it just isn’t um what you
Can expect it from him is to be a very good to excellent shutdown defender in the mold of Brandon Carlo and I can tell you uh because I’ve spoken to the kid he watched a ton of video on Brandon Carlo he models his game exactly after Brandon
Carlo to the point of when to be physical so um let’s not ex expect that because he’s 6.5 or whatever he is now that he’s going to be a physical Beast he’s not he’s probably going to end up being a little bit more physical than Carlo but that’s what you can expect from
Him yeah still good to have the defensive depth regardless something to work on um she uh actually Providence is playing tonight am I right yep all right so we got Providence tonight got the uh Pittsburgh Penguins coming to town and I believe our company colleague
Andrew blin is is gonna be at that game so give him a follow um Good Kid hard worker um what do you think about um what Pittsburgh did let’s just looking at this game this afternoon do you think Pittsburgh did anything to better their team and can the Bruins uh make it two
In a row uh this afternoon I think they can I I I think Crosby’s not happy with um with them deciding to move on from gensel so I I think I think that locker room is a little discombobulated right now I think they’re frustrated um I I I heard
Crosby’s presser the other day as um they were asking kind of how he felt about it and he seemed pretty upset they were just coming off a pretty tough loss as well I think they played yesterday um so I think this is a perfect opportunity
For the Bruins to kind of get rolling on a team that is pretty frustrated after losing one of their one of their top guys yeah for sure and I think when we look at who they lost just the level of talent today today’s game for Pittsburgh
Is a statement game right it’s what are we going to be moving forward after even the comments anybody in that locker room made whether that be Malin lat Tang or Cosby you know those are the three guys you look to in times where your team’s a little bit rattled right after losing I
Might add a six nothing game to their C to their division Rivals with the Washington Capitals so today’s game I I I believe at least is their first game post that six nothing loss post Kel trade today is the statement game for them and did you find the return on
Gensel underwhelming guys because I think it was I I think they could have done much better yeah I think we’ve found at this deadline like the Penguins through all these reports made it pretty obvious that they were going to move on from gensel I think you saw the same thing with
Um who’s the guy the the Flames parted ways with um not the Flames tereno um when you make it known that these guys are going to get traded um some of them have no trade Clauses it really puts a lot of Leverage to the team you’re trading them to um so I
Think when you look at Carolina getting gel it’s like they know that the Penguins want to move on from gensel and I think that makes it a lot easier to get like you said an underwhelming package in order to get him but yeah I I did think they could have got way more
For sure I love that do his crunch the wrong numbers yeah yeah uh should should be a a decent game this afternoon hopefully with the day off that the Boston BRS are well arrested and feeling a little better you know um a post- trade deadline could
Inspire a team to say hey look around the room nothing changed you know there’s no there’s no emotional ties that have to be done now it’s just now we’re moving on to you know secure a playoff spot maybe make a second third or even a Stanley Cup run who knows
Anything could happen even though that I’m not like I just don’t see a long run in this team but I really hope it does happen um I did I did put some cash on the Boston Bruins winning the Stanley Cup you know you have to but um I just
Think that this you don’t no I know I know but uh I just think this is a an experience uh for everybody that is over I know that this can be very trying and very you know you don’t know what you’re going to do when you have to you know up
Plant your family friends community that you’ve been around for a while it’s an emotional toll you really don’t know it’s a it’s just a one of those things that happens and um I’m just glad that this group is together and and now I just want to see how they recover from
What we saw past Allstar break and that is just you gotta Play 60 Minutes you gotta be prepared at the very last moment I know that you might be tired and so on but it just got you got to put it in you to like not give up
Those in uh important possession moments late in games that are coming back to bite this team in the ass and if that continues in the playoffs I don’t see him being successful in the first round the the faceoffs have got to get better and I know John Brown was in here
Earlier uh he said the same thing um gotta get a guy that wins a Faceoff well we didn’t get a guy that wins faceoffs in the trade deadline so now it has to be done internally so um we’ll see what happens with that with this afternoon when you go up
Against a pretty damn good Faceoff guy and Sydney Crosby that continues to you know have a decent career for himself and you know how oh my God how about the rumors that um Sydney Crosby was pissed off at the gensel talk and was willing to be traded to Boston it’s like come
On and I I can already hear I can already hear Dom going it wouldn’t work in the salary cap world that’s PlayStation I’m not even I’m not even thinking about that but my God I do want to ask these guys a couple of questions because I already uh I already know you’re answers
To this Mark but yep um so Parker Jason whoever wants to hit it up first have we seen the last of Derek forbert and Matt grizzli in Boston I I find it very difficult to believe that they’d even want to come back like you even look at what they
Have to deal with on the dayto day right it’s constant scrutiny from their fans you know they look on online and sure enough it’s just stuff upon stuff about why they need to go why they need to be traded I don’t see why they’d want to go
Back sure there’s a pretty good culture in Boston so that might be one redeeming factor for the Bruins in that sense but I find it very difficult at least for me to believe that they’ they’d want to go back assuming that there are other suitors um that they could go
To yeah um it’s funny you brought that up D I’m actually I’m very low on Matt grizzli this year I I don’t think he’s had a great season at all um I think with forbort obviously he was the one that missed that team meeting right on
That on that road trip um obviously he’s been dealing with injuries I think it might be good for him to just kind of get a reset for him personally somewhere else but a guy like grizzli I just I think when you talk about a lot of the defensive Zone lapses and turnovers and
Uncharacteristic turnovers and Mis coverage in the defensive Zone I think he’s kind of been at the center of that a lot um honestly i’ I’d rather see a guy like Loray eat his minutes and I know he still is a work in progress in the defensive Zone but I think what
Lowai brings on the offensive zone is just I mean those moves he were making in that last game in Toronto I mean he’s skilled and that kid can play but I I’m not I’m not too high on grizzli so I I definitely do think the Bruins should
Probably move on from him I don’t think he his style of play really fits in um kind of like how Parker was alluding to of their style of disciplined defensive hockey and also to your point maybe they could use a coach back there to coach up a guy like grizzli who’s
Maybe struggling in that area of the game um yeah no so I I I agree I would be surprised if any of them were on the team next year I got I got one more well actually I got a couple more but Jake debrusk uh would you bring him back and what’s the
Most what’s the top end that you would pay him I I I think it might depend on the term I think that’s an important aspect of it say it’s a short deal it’ll probably be a little bit more I’d say you’re topping out at maybe for a
Short-term deal maybe anywhere from 3 to five I’d say um but if you’re going longterm i’ say it’s definitely on the lower end I’d say anywhere from two to four um other because then you get into the area where it’s you might not want to keep him
Around um from what I’ve seen from him especially lately ever since the coaching change he seemed to found his way a little bit better at least for my view like we’ve seen him sort of settle in a little bit more than what he used to do remember back under Cassidy he was
To put it nicely a mess um and he just didn’t seem like his normal self he wasn’t playing his standard of game but then as soon as that coaching change hit he seemed to sort of pick his game back up and so so I think definitely we’re
Definitely try to keep him around if you can um and then it just becomes a matter of how long and how much yeah I I I kind of agree along those lines I think this was an interesting year for debrus coming into the contract year after pretty I don’t
Know if it was a career-high year last year but he kind of exploded last year after kind of being scrutinized under Cassidy I think Montgomery kind of let him loose a little last year um and he’s really just underperformed I mean what is he on a$8 million a year
Cap hit right now I if he’s going to want anywhere near that I I think that’s a hard no um and I think he he’s GNA be his Camp’s goingon to be pretty high um but like yeah if you can get him in that four five range I’m not completely
There’s a lot of people out there that are completely out on Jake debrus that that’s not me I I still believe in this kid I think this kid can still bring some fire to the offense but I’m not willing to if Jake de bruss is goingon to want anywhere near eight million I
Think that’s a hard pass and also just to add on to that last part he plays the style that Boston plays right he is a guy that he he’s going to block a shot capitalize on a mistake and he’s going to beat you on a breakaway that’s what
Boston does right that’s their that’s the majority of their what their offense comes off of his mistakes so whether that be a turnover in the neutral zone then that they can capitalize on most of the time especially with the the Finish ability that Jake de Brusque has has
That’s what you’re looking for out of a player so I think Jake debras is the perfect fit in Boston yeah so two more two more guys Mark I’m going to start with you because I honestly don’t know what your thoughts are on on these two guys and then uh
Jason and Parker can chime in would you bring Danton Heinen and James van reik back next season I would do one can you guess which one I’m thinking hen hen yep yeah I I find I find Danton to be a little more of a better versatile
Forward than uh van rdik to me James seems to be the type of guy that wants to be in a tri in a uh in a click Trio you know what I mean he wants to be consistently with somebody and and I don’t think he performs his best and
This is not a knock against jvr at all but I don’t think if he’s I don’t think he’s happy not getting consistent time with with um um his Lin mates and if he’s jumping around you’re seeing him kind of struggled offensively to put it together um where hinan in my opinion is
And has been throughout his career accustomed to travel up and down the lineup no matter where he needs to go uh and fit right in immediately uh with some really good chemistry um that could be wrong and so on I’ll take the heat
For it but and you know but if it was if it came down to not having a two choices I would take jvr at back as well but I would coach him to a point where he can stay with certain Lin mates all the time and not in a system that’s constantly in
Shuffle yeah I’ll talk about jvr here because I I agree with hinen I think H is a great player and really fits within the Brun system as well but for me jvr I’ve watched him play since I was a little kid you know the Leafs game was always
On I’m from Toronto and leafs gam was always on you can’t escape them and especially when he plays the Bruins it always seemed like the puck was on a stick in the back of the net and I from what I’ve seen so far this year as well
From him he hasn’t really changed that much as a player you know he’s he’s a player that’s going to stand in front of the net and a lot of problems right that’s what he’s known for that’s what he does and he plays a two-way game for
The most part I I like jvr I always have but for me I I would take jvr I think over Dan and Heinen if that was an option just because of the player that jvr like the role he plays and Boston kind of lacks that that that net front
Presence um and and they always sort of have in that respect but the that’s one of their biggest problems right now you look at it it might be a de Bros who’s in front of the net but you don’t really get guy like jvr who is a massive human
Being I might add in front of the net screening the goalie and who has the hands to back it up yeah I I would have to I I think jvr was perfect for what Sweeny was trying to accomplish this year and that little bargain Bing spree he did last summer I
Think it was a perfect pickup um I also think he’s pretty good on the power play in front of the net but if he’s GNA like that comment just said if if he’s going to want anything more than a million next year I I don’t really see a fit for
Him in the Bruin’s long-term plan whereas a guy like Heinen I could see him plugging in to the middle six yeah for sure I also just so I just want to touch on that I I don’t want him to be overpaid either that if he’s overpaid
Then then it then it doesn’t it’s not worth the cost he’s not a you know he’s not a 30 goal he’s not 30 goal scorer so there’s no point uh you know adding him on top of that um I was thinking about this during the offseason when he was signed jvr that is
Um yes he could be a a solid veteran in the room on the line with anybody totally get that uh good on Boston for identifying character and so on um but I also saw him as he signed a one-year deal okay so he’s gonna want to go out
There and and show the rest of the League what he can do for uh an upcoming contract as a GM I bet you don’t s was like this kid’s B betting on himself right now to have a good year to Showcase himself now is that a flippable asset at
This time of the year when you need to get maybe draft Capital I’m not saying at first round or a second round Kevin Kevin if you were still in the room because you said that jvr could fetch a first round pick I’m sorry sir I had to
Disagree with that one my man um you know but you know as a GM you got to think about that some of these guys are betting the like kind of like what Buffalo did with Taylor Hall before we got him to Boston the same kind of mentality you know just you’re betting
On yourself and so on but at that point he’s not a martian he’s not a um berson he’s not a pinac and so on where you automatically look at somebody and go oh that’s a tradable freaking asset you know he was a tradable asset at this
Time but we still have him and hopefully a guy like jvr can really bring a playoff mentality he’s got a decent sized body he’s good on on you know on Puck he’s good at the key so why not all right so here here I look I look at it like
This video games have ruined trade deadline because you can go on Xbox and PlayStation and make anything happen but the reality is that a team in the Brewing situation uh one point out of first place in the conference uh a playoff spot all but virtually locked up do not sell simple as that
Yeah um yeah Kevin your boat no no no no he was just saying he was just saying what he was what he was meant because because of what the price was paid for Felino Felino fetched the first round I think that’s what he was saying this is this is what he said right
Here yeah I think he’s talking about that one leaf steel where the Blue Jackets sent him over to the LEF how many years ago was that Jesus oh my here we go the chat’s gonna just blow up oh my God if I could smack him I would too
Funny uh like it was two years ago if that um all right um Jesus we’re going on did Peak made it to Boston last night right like he was supposed to play um when do you guys I think we see him um I’m looking at the at the
Schedule right now and they have the St Louis Blues on the 11th at 7 pm that’s a home game and I think our boy Tom Cudi is g to be covering that game um stoked to keep this freaking streak going it’s guys like Jason and and Tom and and
Andrew and myself that you know we work together really good on a schedule and oh I’m so proud of you guys um then there two days off and then there’s Montreal on Thursday the 14th uh in Montreal and then back home on Saturday for an evening matchup against the
Philadelphia Flyers so I’m sure they want to get him into a couple of practices before throwing him into a game he might see the he might I mean if you if you’re looking at that Dom and thinking on that track the 14th in Montreal would probably be the game I I don’t know
About the St Louis game right now like do you want then yeah would be the one like you you you probably for your first game want them want the matchups to be in your favor Kevin Jesus the hut the hot takery Kevin is so bad I love
It kind of on that um conversation with Peak though I’m interested to hear your guys thoughts where um maroon fits into the lineup when he comes back from his injury do do you think he he bumps brazzo off the fourth line because I I really have liked brazzo what he’s
Brought but he’s he’s gonna have to bump someone off so I’m interested to see where you guys think he fits I don’t know I think it’s gonna have to be matchup based I because I can’t see maroon and Brazil in the lineup at the same time
Right on the same line yeah just can’t see it no completely different players entirely yeah slow yeah real slow that line would be skating in quicksand yeah you know but it there’d be a heavy line to play against and if they can up with you and NAIA that’s what they’re going
To do but when it comes down to you know a playoff lineup where sometimes certain teams don’t have the big heavy beef like the Bruins do now they’re running more a playoff line lineup like it’s more offensively you know those those players those fourth liners that are you know
That weren’t generally fourth liners are going to skate right around around you so they’ll find weak sides they they’ll poke areas that where you know you’ll get exposed so bad that you you know spinning in circles so yeah and I think brazo has found success because he’s
Playing with two speedsters and Loco and and bis that can together can cover up or mask his lack of speed and and uh get into the de defensive situations that brazo doesn’t get himself into because of that lack of speed what up Robbie my boy Robbie
Shanet in the house hey by the way thank thanks everybody for tuning in to the stream today totally appreciate it we’re getting M uh some really good numbers same thing as last last time so really appreciate you guys also appreciate Parker for joining us and Jason guys if
You are on Twitter or X give these guys a follow um and uh yeah keep the hockey talk coming I mean Parker YouTube yes yes uh that is the on the Fly just go to YouTube and uh search on the Fly um I I forgot to post a picture of your uh your
Account so uh but I’ll I’ll I’ll get it out there and we’ll get you some more followers and and subscribers so guys have been great Dom as always thank you so much um I don’t know where we go from here um do we wrap it up and get ready
For the Bruins uh afternoon game against the Pittsburgh Penguins or do you guys want to keep going on I mean I could do anything I I got I got till one o’clock I got till one o’clock I have till 3 I’m heading to the nights game uh so I am
Recording the Bruins game and watching it after so you guys don’t post anything on Twitter about the Bruins game cuz I don’t want to know about it I’m not going to promise anything Dom you know me okay then I’ll stay off Twitter for what’s up with you gentlemen do you
Guys want to call it a day or you guys want to keep talking we can talk about Vegas too I’m good with whatever yeah yeah there’s gotta talk about Vegas yeah yeah um and this is what the the capser convention well I I mean let’s let’s not go there
Because Mark stone is a legitimate injury right right you know very legitimate and people that bitched and whined for the last two days about Vegas being allowed to do this um let’s look at your Boston Bruins who now have $5.6 million in long-term injury reserve and
If it wasn’t for that uh they wouldn’t be able to ice a full uh 23 man roster so what’s good for the goose is good for the gander they’re not circumventing anything they’re playing within the rules the way they are yeah I was just I was just messing
Around trying to be that guy oh I know I know I know you you’re just messing around but there are people that actually think that oh yeah they just put Mark Stone on L TI and all of a sudden he’ll be healed come playoff time
Well the guy the guy has a torn spleen for crying out loud like come on hey keep the conversation going guys I’m probably gonna lose you because I got a terrible connection oh we can hear you great yeah I know but everything everything is frozen you all four of our screens are
Frozen so I’m probably gonna end up losing you pretty soon but the Stream the stream will go on so um keep it going for at least a little while till I get back yep so Parker you brought them up the kns do you think they won trade I
Don’t want to call it trade deadline because it really starts a couple weeks before but do you think they won trade deadline it it it’s hard to say they didn’t right you think about all the names I brought they brought in hurdle they brought in uh Mana was one of the
Big ones hannahan was another one those three guys guys are going to help them like pretty tremendously especially as a team that is skilled and don’t forget they also have uh Bruce Cassidy as a coach who’s LED teams and who and who’s won the cup and it’s like you know it’s
He he’s up there right and when you look at a team like Vegas who already has the skill you think about all the names they’ve got to add another three guys on top of that for although they did trade their future for a win now mentality it it’s really hard
A match and they don’t have a good shot this year Jason yeah no I I think they’re kind of in that win now mode um and I I think they kind of modeled what the Bruins did last year in a way they they even went above and
Beyond um so I I definitely do think they won the deadline I think the close second in my opinion would be the Hurricanes um obviously Landing gel interested to see what you guys think on that whole ketov situation about how him being sent down and then traded um from
The capitals right I I think he’s still a pretty good player and has a lot left so I was I was surprised to how that kind of all unfolded yeah I think the goal of that was for a cap dump right because you think about it it’s an 8 million deal
And then the only reason why I sent him down was in hopes that a team would claim him off wavers and pick up that large contract so the washing capos to do something else with them the reason why was the third round pick in exchange was they’re picking up the player plus I
Think it was 50% retained as well right so you get you get the best of both worlds you get the player and you get the retained salary and so for me I absolutely love the move from the Caroline Hurrican yeah me too like I I I I think
You’re right they’re probably a very close second um something we haven’t really seen from the canes over the last few years is them really going all in a trade deadline to to go for it it it’s new territory when they it comes to them Vegas on the other hand we see it every
Year every year that these guys are all in and they do whatever they’re not afraid of trading first round picks I think since they’ve joined the league there’s only one player that they’ve kept it was a first round pick uh now they’ve got next years’s but they
Don’t have 25 and 20 sorry they’ve got this years but don’t have 25 and 26 like they’re probably the model of going for it yeah and and but it’s definitely gonna bite him eventually like like it is the Bruins like I think they see this window obviously they already won one
They see this window in the next couple years and they’re going Full Throttle so it’s interesting to see how it folds out and how they’re able to recover from it um because they’re going to be in the same spot as the Bruins where they’re not they’re not going to be able to pay
All these guys um so I’m I’m interested to see kind of what happens there yeah and you see it sort of now with the Tamp Bay Lightning as well where they went they went pretty hard in I guess it was 2017 or 18 where they went full out to
Go to go win the cup and they and they fell short and then from there on out you know they they’ve been struggling ever since right they haven’t quite been the same team because there’s no one behind them right they have their top guys and then from down there they have
No large Prospect pools they don’t have too much to back it up and that’s one of their biggest problems and that’s why they’re so low in the standings as well because they they just don’t have the full around team that they once did so Parker with that in mind and Mark Jason
You can Chim chime in um how much credit then does Don Sweeney get for being able to go from going all in last year falling short they really should have won the Stanley Cup to this transition year where they are nowhere where they’re way above where everybody expected them to be to next
Year when they’re trans positioning into their next core with a whole lot of money to play with uh to to get even better is Don sede not getting a lot of flak for what he has actually done uh and could you just repeat the first part of that question I think my
Internet might have cut out on me okay so with with um you talk about Tampa and and how they they fell off and the same thing is going to happen to Vegas going forward trying to keep all these guys how much credit does Don Sweeney actually deserve
Because he’s getting a lot of flak from going to a team that should have won the Stanley Cup last year in a transition year being way above where everybody expected to next year where they’ve got a whole lot of money uh to start that next win I think I think from what I’m
Seeing is Sweeney’s getting a lot of flock for for doing what he has done and when you compare them to Tamp what Tamp is going through and what bigas will be going through that Sween deserves a lot more credit than uh he’s being given for
Sure and and I think part of that also uh part of that credit should also go to the coach with J Montgomery because when you look at it right their team isn’t on paper comparable to other teams in the East or for that matter the league but their biggest their biggest asset right
Now is their team by and every single one of the guys in there exception of maybe Pac on the odd night are all committed to that structure and that’s why they’ve been you know as consistent as they have been I think we have the most overtime overtime l or overtime
Games this year so far because they play the same game every single night doesn’t matter who they’re playing sure there’s night where you know they might have a little bit more Buzz under their Bonnet but at the end of the day you know they they play a structured game because the
Entire team is bought into that into that sort of role that they need to play in order to compete with other teams so I think part of it follows to answer your question part of it is Sweeny for bringing in the right guys but also part of it is under Jim Montgomery for
Combining that structure and figuring out a way for the entire team to go with it plus you know you didn’t give up anything that you want to build on for the next season that’s that’s accommod B right there you know that’s like like Dom you alluded to they this
Is like the start of a new window and and by starting a new window I don’t think you go all in because in I I don’t want to go in anybody’s head or say that I’m you know know what people are thinking but maybe the organiz ation looked at it like this
Like we can’t do what we did last year because we don’t have those tradable assets that we had so we have to be dealt with the cards that we have now so and that is not punting this year and forgetting about it and just you know setting low expectations in the locker
Room is never a good idea you know Andrew raycroft has has said that several times in the past morning brew that you know this this team shouldn’t be quitting it should be just keep going and so on regardless of the moves so um sending a message like that isn’t good
But in reality they’re probably saying that they’re probably outside of a cup window right now but the next year is the one we should really be focused on because we have Capital to spend there’s going to be some parches there’s going to be a lot more youth involved in the
Next year’s roster I believe which is going to be impactful and I think that the organization and the way they breed and and develop players is they they’ll be quick Learners and then next year’s team you probably see a better team than they did had this year just my
Opinion yeah I I think he deserves a ton of credit I mean all those signings he did in the summer um shaton Kirk van Reams guy geeky like Morgan geeky especially I mean that’s a steal what what what what he was able to get them
For and then two Parker’s credit too I I think Montgomery elevated a lot of these guys games I think you’re seeing a lot of these best guys games that they’ve played in their career so I think that is a credit to Montgomery but I mean this was supposed to be a bridge year
For for the Bruins and Don Sweeney and for them to for him to pick up those guys and kind of fill the gaps and for them to excel in those roles I like you said you don’t see that around the league I mean the Bruins still have low
Ry ptra they have some pretty good prospects down in the pool and for them to have that one year removed from going all in so to say I think that’s just so rare in today’s NHL and yeah go ahead Mark I do want to say something that that Dom said uh in a
Previous podcast not long ago that if there was one signing and I refuse to say his name that will never happen on this podcast at all last year there was a signing that was made of piece of [ __ ] and if that didn’t happen that whole thing didn’t happen last year Don
Sweeney was possibly going to win GM of the year is that you you mentioned that right Dom yeah so that’s how I mean that’s how respected he is as a GM in the league and everything I mean he people hate him because he’s he’s just that’s how the
Organization works this is how this is a this is not just a Sweeny thing it’s how the organization works and how it’s been working so you know he’s putting the pieces together yes he’s a little heavy on the NCAA free agents and so on that’s not a bad idea changed though Mark
That’s changed I know absolutely it’s but if you if you loseing first round picks second round picks for a multiple part of the years you need to have that as your as your backup you know to get more people into the prospect pool but Sweeney gets knocked
For for signing NCAA free agents and ignoring the rest of the world well he went out and he got Ethan Richie last year signed to an AHL deal he signed Adam matura to an AHL deal after inviting them to Camp uh he did the same thing the year before with toosi was a
WHL guy so this this tag that or this thing that he’s being tagged with that you know he’s an NCAA guy has just gone out the window for me um but I I want to ask both Parker and Jason because Jason brought him up about Matthew ptra I know he
Everybody knows he’s out injured but what you guys saw early in the season of him from him what do you expect going forward I expect expect him to be an impact player for this team for a long time I I think when he first brought in
I think his raw just his raw skating ability his raw Puck handling ability was so evident obviously his skills were NHL ready um and I think a big part of why he got injured as well I think he needs to get used to that physicality um plenty of games I think
These other teams bruisers kind of made it their goal to rough him up a little bit take them out of the game I think that kind of built up on him I mean he’s a young kid he’s really my age um he’s 19 I just turned 20 put that into
Perspective makes it kind of crazy how young he is um but I think having this year under his belt where he kind of okay got his feet wet understood what it takes to be an nhlr on a day-to-day basis I I I really do have high hopes
For him down the line I I don’t know about you Parker yeah for sure and I mean like so I I had covered a little bit of the World Junior stuff and one of the big things I saw from him was to be honest he just seemed unconfident especially
Towards the end of that like towards the Christmas period towards December and January the whole goal of him going to the Juniors was to boost his confidence and for me from what I could see at least from him it looked like he was slowly but surely losing his confidence
Playing against younger guys and to me that was a little bit of a worrying sight uh obviously he was he was he was hurt and not like that that was part of the reason why but to me he just didn’t quite seem there to what he should be
Playing like especially as an NHL loan you know that was Canada’s really only NHL player there and most of the time you look to that kind those kind of players to really pick up pick up the pace and see where it’s going he just didn’t seem to have that with him so I
Think from what I’m hoping to see from him is a lot more confidence especially as he sort of transforms this game into the NHL style but until then you know I think he still has to boost his confidence and Parker what did you think
Of block melis at the at the uh at the world juniors I think he was amazing personally like he obviously a team like lafer right not expected to do very much but in captain of the team you look to him to do something and he really
Performed there I mean i’ it’s been you know it’s been a it’s been a road for him obviously he’s played the last couple World Juniors but every year I’ve seen him he just keeps getting better and better and he finally in my opinion looked the part of a future NHL player
At that World Juniors basically putting the team on his back and I think you know when we look at what laia and obviously they aren’t expected to do much at these tournaments but at the same time that he put them on their back and almost almost gave uh some of the
Teams a run for their money and he was really good at the World Championships last May where he came in out of the blue one of the youngest players in the tournament and performed against men so I know people are looking at his NCAA stats this year and aren’t too thrilled
By the numbers but I I never worry about a player’s numbers uh their first year in college never do Oscar yelick is is a perfect example where so I’m not worried about uh his numbers the first year I’m worried about him getting acclimated to North America and look what he’s doing
This year Fabian lysel was the same way went to the WHL got acclimated to North America um had a pretty decent first year in in Providence and you know this year didn’t start off great but he’s doing excellent now yep um I gotta get to one question
Here and this is from my good friend sassy blon uh and again I I know she she was wanted to us to talk about Morgan geeki previously so I want to get to this now um how about his contributions um as of late and um uh
Can we all talk about the the comparison he’s leaving with um New Jersey Devils forward that was traded for Pavo zaka I can’t remember his name Derek holla Derek holla yes Eric Holla um he is almost playing like that Eric Holla role in my opinion because Eric holler did
The same thing he was a um you know a bottom six forward that occasionally one season got a lot of time in in the second line um you know with C being out and so on and he rose to that occasion this is kind of like the same path that
Morgan geeki is playing Morgan’s always been that that that bottom you know offensive line forward uh you know that plays that kind of a grinder line type of mentality but has a skill set and and decent IQ to play higher in the lineup and obviously he’s getting his chance
Now and and and showing it to fans that you know another thing you know Seattle just didn’t give this guy a chance or an opportunity in my opinion to really Thrive and Boston signing him shows that Don Sweeney has a good eye on Talent like that and had a cheap value too so
It’s an all wind to be honest with you and and he’s been really a surprising forward for me yeah we we have to really credit Dennis bony uh the the um head pro Scout for the for the Bruins um I I watch geeki like everybody talks about his brother
Connor who plays uh with free dick on the Swift Current Broncos in the WHL uh that you know he’s the geeky we should we should have well yeah it would be nice but in a lot of ways they’re similar what I like about geeki is he can move he’s a big
Body he’s not afraid to battle along the boards I think he has a very underrated shot I I really do it’s not so much that he can whip it past a goalie but um he disguises his release point and it it just seems to me that every shot that he
Puts on net is with a purpose whether it’s to be deflected or whether it’s to create a rebound so um you know Freddy or jvr or whoever he’s playing with can can be there in front of the net for for the tapin and I’m impressed I’m somewhat
Surprised um but I wouldn’t say I’m totally surprised uh but that’s my opinion the geeky yeah and Jason had mentioned it earlier too about just the the contract that he’s on and the absolute steal that Don Sweeney did he has to be credited as well Don Sweeney for this this uh this
Acquisition you know coming in you probably weren’t expecting too much from him but yet we’ve seen it time and time again how well he’s fit the structure that Boston plays and you know it’s he he’s he’s performed well for them to say the least yeah yeah and like you were saying
Too Dom I mean his release is I think it’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough um he can rip the puck he I think it was the game against Vegas he came down on a breakaway um and just ripped one past Aiden Hill I mean the yes the puck was
Just it was on a stick and it was off a stick and when you’re a goalie and that you just can’t stop that not even just where he placed it perfectly in the top corner but he was in stride the puck was on his stick and he just flung it off
His stick into the net such an underrated release and I think that’s why he scores most of the goals he does the goalie just can’t save it um at times not 100% all the time and I know Dom’s not a big comparison guy but I see
A lot of and I was a goal tender not a very good one but I hated shots when people took and stride trying to find a hole in a defenseman where you it’s a natural screen and you know who did that famously in Boston Bill kessle Phil kessle was one
That could just absolutely snipe a freaking shot and find like like seriously he could like take hairs off the sack as the pucks going through he used to get so many goals like that um and I see a lot of that in geeky trying to use
That Defender as a natural screen to get it by yeah and I like that can he work on his speed a absolutely everybody can you know what I mean but it’s it’s that’s one of his more solid attributes that I like about Morgan and I like the
Way that he adjusts the game and Pace with every level that he goes at when he’s dropping down and he was playing right side with with uh with Chie Coyle he played a a slower game more possessive and so on but when he gets the higher Advantage up at the higher
Lines he’s playing with pace and and you know and can shoot I like that I I’ll tell you the one thing that I’d really like to see geeky work on is face offs because he’s such a big St like you’ve heard me talk about this many of times Mark that that
Matthew ptra technically is an excellent face off person I mean you don’t win 58% of your draws in the OHL without being technically sound and what is lacking is the strength well Morgan geeki has the strength but he’s not technically sound in in the face off so in the face off
Dot so whether you’re trying to win uh the puck back on on your forehand or on your backhand you have to get over the puck so you’re attacking it from the top and while you’re doing that you’re blocking your opponent’s stick from getting to the puck geeky is more left
Right if he can get down over the puck he’s got the strength to prevent the the opposition centerman from getting down over top of the puck and winning the draw and and when you talk about technically sound in the face off dot those are the little things that you’ve got to work on
Technically yeah um yeah sorry goad no say um struggles on the dot is kind of been talked about a lot and people have been bringing up the fact maybe bringing up John beer to take care of that do you think it’s worth it to bring him up
Solely for face Mark Mark and I talked about it the other day so so Beer’s at 53% Charlie coil’s at 52% that’s one win out of every 100 face offs right yeah basically we talk you’re talking guy that’s 57% different story but a one percentage difference is one face off
Out of a hundred yeah we were talking about on Thursday night a lot of the fans were saying bring up John beer and and rightfully so you know they but what they also have to do is they have to temper expectations on be him being a very good all
Situational um face off guy right that’s he’s not going to be a savior now we have to do internally the the trade deadline’s over we didn’t really address that need at all so now it needs to be done internally like we talked about earlier moving forward we just have to
Be more protective of you know you hate to lose any face off but especially in the defensive Zone where you’re changing the momentum of a game and in in a second you know especially late in games when you need to capitalize and finalize on two points so I I asked you guys earlier
What you thought about the uh the lack of a defensive coach uh on the team is is affecting uh the defenseman so let me ask you this with Chris Kelly uh who was a very good Faceoff man in the in the NHL on the bench why are they struggling so
Much that’s a valid valid valid valid question now is it is it here is it the players and in here and not the message I mean I don’t know you could bring those CS to the table too well it doesn’t matter who whether it’s Coy or whether it’s zaka or whether it’s it’s
Uh geeky or Frederick they’re big strong guys they should be overpowering at least in the strength Department in the face off circle and a lot of times it it’s more that te like I mentioned with ptra it’s more that technical side of the face off than than
Anything I agree I think a lot of times you see pivotal parts of the game just losing faceoffs cleanly not even just kind of losing it off like cleanly just straight back and that to me is kind of just like a will thing like when you’re
When you step into the dot in in that part of the game like you need to tell yourself like I’m just I’m not gonna let this guy beat me in this face off and for him to just snap it quick back clean I I I it could be a technical
Thing I think that’s more of a kind of like a will thing I think these centers need to Bear down a little bit more on these draws that’s just my opinion yeah 100% I think part of it also is just the timing part right so I know for me I
Learned because my coach would drop me pucks non-stop until I won one against my buddy who was a penguins fan unfortunately they’re gonna lose today but I mean the truth is right is a part of it is is just consistent consistent reps so whether they’re focusing on that
In practice it takes time right because at the end of the day you’re not going to pick it up one like once like out of out of the blue it’s not something you just inherit it’s something that you have to work on time after time that’s
Why berson got so good at and Crosby especially I don’t know if you guys have ever seen the videos of Crosby but he will legit be working on his faceoffs after practice with somebody else just because you know that’s that’s what the best face off guys do you know they they
Put the time in they put the work in and that’s what you have to do to get really good at face offs absolutely all right guys uh we’re approaching two hours and that’s when I was going to cut it off because uh I’m a babysitting a a very needy
