Caring For the B’s Pt. 6
Hi this is St wall from the Boston Bruins and Mell bam uh today’s episode of caring for the boties I’m here with longtime equipment manager Matty fuler and we his get his thoughts on um the importance of proper uh helmet fitting and um the durability of helmets hey
Guys thanks for having me obviously helmets are a big piece of equipment important piece of equipment protecting the head um just really quick over the years uh the evolution of them this is an older helmet really thin padding kind of stiff you know this was the technology probably 10 years ago where
Now most guys are getting custom padding inside to absorb the hit um absorb your head from jogging around too much when you get hit uh reduce the impact so every company’s kind of got their own version it’s more of a spongy material um just so you don’t feel the the impact
Of the hit um to the head so uh as far as fitting you want your helmet to fit properly you want want it uh snug on your head uh you don’t want it too loose um chin straps we recommend uh when you when it’s strapped to be able to just
Only fit two fingers underneath uh really important to make sure they fit properly so they’re not falling off your head when you get hit and uh really just make sure that it’s comfortable for your fit and and protective Maddie your thoughts on I mean a lot of um parents
Um have multiple kids that play hockey um and they will um you know take the older brother’s helmet and give it to the younger brother and you may find that you know a helmet’s in the family for a lot of years I what’s your thoughts on the durability um of the
Helmets and how often you should um you should buy a new helmet um for us specifically I mean we’re new helmets every year uh Road helmets uh sometimes twice a year just because of the travel going under planes the you know compressing of the air um just getting
Jogged around in the equipment bags crushed so definitely don’t want to pass down helmets there’s definitely a a expiration date on them um you know you know it’s important that the kids have the helmets like I said fit properly and the other thing is especially you know
Kids I know they don’t like to air out their equipment they’re playing throwing their sweaty helmets in their bags they’re staying in there they do grow mold bacteria um causes you know skin infections and everything like that so it’s important that you know you replace the helmets often um you’re not you know
Handing them down to your younger brother younger sister you want to make sure that you know the kids are protected you know the more you use it they do break down the materials break down the plastic breaks down and like I said the importance of your head obviously one of the most important
Pieces of equipment I think it’s very important that uh you’re you’re taking good care of your helmets replacing them often and um making sure that you’re always protected you know man you make a good point there I mean these materials the evolution of these materials has been really incredible um but they are
Materials and um the materials compressed down overtie um both from wear and from temperature changes um so they do uh over the course of the years become less protective so just keep that in mind when it’s time to um freshen up the equipment for your for your kids thanks
Babby yeah thanks for having Me
Manager of Player Rehabilitation, Scott Waugh, and Equipment Manager, Matt Falconer, go over the importance of proper helmet fitting.
