Reasons for isles win? One, isles were playing a bad team in quacks helps against another b league goalie i never heard of. Good win. Isles domination. 13, 14, 29 remain hot including pp goal. Isles now tied with now cold wings for eighth yet don't win tie breaker thanks to nhl high bettman loser points. The lame-o gift that keeps giving. Isles have a favourable sked remaining compared to wings and flyers/tb just 2 pts. up.
On to tdl-can't give louzer an 'F' since he didn't participate in tdl. More like a 0 or 'I' for incomplete since there was no way louzer could make moves this tdl. And look at what vgk gave up (+ltir) to get hertl. Two future firsts (none this draft) plus a top prospect. No way isles could offer a package like that to get a scorer. Good news is isles kept their first-for now. June draft isn't considered great and is d loaded top 10 and isles have played their way out of top 10 so no guarantee louzer doesn't deal first in june. So this tdl inactivity means isles swim or sink with this roster two more seasons until some of those overpays up front run out. 21, 29 have one year left. Could be good trade bait by next tdl. 27, 44 two more years left. $23 mill right there. Plus 53, 30 three more years at $5.2 mill. per. And 8, 28 need new deals after next season. That's why isles need to keep those firsts and seconds. To get some good prospects into system and hope louzer doesn't blow them by going off the board to take a projected 3rd rounder with first. And look at pens now-reality set in that they had no choice but to sell-off and re-build and have given up on season meaning pens are 'tanking' once again looking to get bettman lottery 'luck' once again.
Nice win, back in the playoffs. And a very winnable the next 3 games, LA won't be easy but will be a good test. Roy sat his top 2 lines a lot in the third, so they should come out quickly against LA.
The key is if they could hang on to the last playoff spot till the end of this month as they have some tough road games left on their schedule. After April 1st, they only have three road games, and one of those against the Jackets, so it will be a lot easier to secure a playoff spot and even overtake the Flyers for the third spot in their division.
One thing to keep in mind about whether islanders are an elite team or not is the fact that over the last 5 years the east has a rich history of teams imploding in the playoffs: Rangers, Toronto, Bruins and Carolina
