In 2004, the Tampa Bay Lightning went through a tough battle with the Flyers in the Eastern Conference finals and wound up becoming Stanley Cup Champions after beating the Flames. They were lead by head coach John Tortorella in a year he won the Jack Adams. So Tonight, as the Philadelphia Flyers came into Tampa, it was a special one.
Not only did the Lightning celebrate the 20 year anniversary of that 2004 Stanley Cup Championship, with Torts in town, it was also a bit of a reunion. So with guys like Lecavalier, Boyle, Richards and Andreychuk in the building, it was only right that we got a classic, all timer from John Tortorella on the bench. After a terrible start to the Bolts, giving up an early goal, getting a few bad penalties including a 10 minute misconduct from Hathaway, he let the referee Wes McCauley hear it. Sure enough, the trigger happy McCauley then ejected him from the game just 10 minutes into the first period. Needless to say, he completely lost his mind. He refused to leave the bench and cussed like a sailor in the process. It was an instant classic. As for the game, it was one to forget for the Flyers but I cover it all in todays NHL video!

mccauley is a clown at this point, guy makes it about himself and ruins games….fact was responsible for 2 FL goals against NYR when they played…a bad call and non call cost them a lot, but no discipline for him by the league, Bettman is a useless POS as always, and Campbell is garbage

Wow! I don't normally pick at the refs because they have difficult jobs and do them well, for the most part! This rat salad, however, was a hot mess! I guess the refs must of had a few pints with the alumni before the game! No excuse for this, Torts (who I really can't stand) deserves an apology from the NHL, not a fine!!

That shove gets a 10 minute but then you have boarding penalties uncalled??? The fuck were the refs looking at
Basically, it all started when Cirelli was hit during a downtime of play by Garnet Hathaway… dude, Hathaway gets a 10 minute misconduct which gets no explanation to Torts. So that got him going … Then to boot, the Lightning score on a power play that they were already on to make it 3-0.
The next series of play that happens is Eyssimont is tripped by Attard, but the refs make the wrong call initially and call a penalty on the Lightning. A few moments later, the refs overturn themselves and instead it's a penalty on the Flyers, the right call! So then the Lightning score on a standard rebound in front of the net put in by Point, soft goal, easy #1 power play versus #1 pk goal. Important to note here that AGAIN Torts is not given an explanation as to what happened or why it was turned over. 4-0
Immediately following the goal by Point, Torts is blowing up on the refs from the bench as he's been left in the dark for two calls within the span of 5 minutes. Torts demands an explanation. Gets ejected, it gets announced that he's ejected. Torts refuses to leave. The other 3 refs who aren't Wes McCauley go over to Torts and tell him it's time to go. Torts continues to stand his ground for what feels like 10 minutes before walking down the tunnel.
I actually feel bad for Tortorella on this one because the refs have excluded him from all judgment seemingly from the time the puck dropped. He got no explanation on some weird calls, and he starts losing players early due to that bully-tryhard mindset… Shit only gets you so deep against a skilled team though, and the Lightning are on fire tonight.
This game will be remembered as Tortorella's Nightmare. It's a master craft in humiliation. I called my dad right after it happened and we had a real good laugh, they kept showing the team from 2004 up in the box seats laughing at Torts.

as a bolts fan, torts is totally justified in his anger. i like winning but id rather the win be from a good game not refs deciding before the puck even drops. Wes Macauley literally ruins the game as a whole, bad reffing is killing the game as there is ZERO accountability yet players and coaches get fined for even mentioning an inkling of an opinion. its ridiculous how much power refs and linesman are given with no repercussions for their shit calls and literally nobody can say or do anything about it.
