As a Vegas fan living in DC, I am soooo excited. Watching Mantha has been awesome, he will be great in Vegas and the Caps realizing its time to re-tool to re-build is great. Also, can we stop saying Vegas is going around the cap??? Didn't we beat this dead horse when Tampa did it? Shouldn't it just be recognized as a common practice? I just feel we need to adopt an F-1 mentality; any way to bend rules wins you races? IDK gonna get some Vegas hate for sure lol
Capitals's books look kinda good, someone musta had some kinda plan when they were signing all these guys.
If you forget about what we paid to get him it's not a bad return. Can get solid players in the 2nd round and we weren't re-signing him so we had to get something
Caps fan here;
This is a good trade. I'm guessing the 50% retention was to make the money work and it's only the next 20 games they have to eat that. They get draft capital that can be used in other trades or hey draft ankther player in the 2nd round. Nothing wrong with that. Mantha has not at all been what Washington expected him to be and aside from this season has been a fringe player in the NHL at best. Mantha was playing well this year and had a lot of chemistry with McMichael (which I think was a big boost to McMichaels confidence) but this was a great return for a player that was definitely not being resigned by the caps after this year.
Feel like the caps got a decent return but why mantha was a perfect fit there, hope he re signs with the caps
I am happy to see the Caps making changes. Long overdue. The quicker the rebuild starts, the quicker it's over.
Good riddance.
I’m so glad we finally got dropped him. Red Wings stole Vrana from us for him.
Reminds me of vgk grabbing barbs last year
Could this move be a precursor to a deal to get a centre for washington?
I like this deal for Washington. I'll be honest I'm not a fan of Mantha and his inconsistency, plus Mantha looked completely unmovable last year.
VGK are not playing like last season, at this point anyway.
In exchange for Mantha, Detroit got back Vrana, Panik, a 1st and a 2nd round picks. Washington trades Mantha, has to retain 50% salary and only gets back a 2nd and a 4th. Panik (and a 2nd) was immediately flipped for Nick Leddy, who Detroit traded the next season for another 2nd, Sundqvist, and Jake Walman. Sundqvist was traded the next season for a 4th to Minnesota. Walman is a first pairing defender next to Mo Seider. Even though Vrana didn't work out and was lost on waivers (and currently playing for St. Louis's AHL affiliate) I love how this trade tree worked out for Detroit. Good luck in Vegas, Mantha.
Poor ovi
Going back to the deal that sent Mantha to Washington from Detroit, the best player (going by the stats) the Red Wings received was RD-1 choice Wyatt Johnston.
Except they dealt the pick (that Dallas used to select Johnston) just a few months after the Mantha deal. Oh well…meanwhile Mantha gives Vegas size on the wing-side, but he isn’t very physical for a 6’ 5” player.
I always thought Mantha was to be the bees knees and just has been very underwhelming in his career
Couldn’t Vegas give the Caps a bag of pucks as well?!?
As a caps fan hate it right now just because Mantha was a bad trade when it was made and you could potentially be getting back nothing if those picks don't pan out which would just sting for how much we liked Vrana in DC.
Caps would’ve gotten nothing for Mantha last season. Now able to get some young, hungry players in the lineup while getting a decent return. I like this trade a lot
Excellent return for the Caps.
They win the deal easily.
Wish Mantha all the best.
To all those screaming "they're cheating! They're above the cap!" where is your rage towards Ottawa, MN, MTL for being "above" the cap😂
0:20 As a Caps fan, I am glad Florida is somehow retaining 50% of the contract…
Jk, keep up the great work, Shannon!
I've been happy that Mantha has finally turned a corner for the better in his career this past year. He's been a Cap highlight in a season where we don't have a lot to cheer about. He does have some elite skills. Here's hoping he continues to play well.
I need to see Mark Stones Spleen
Next time that red jersey goes on sail I gotta pick it up
Good trade for both teams. Vegas doesn’t have to give up crazy value, but the Caps get a 2nd rounder for a guy they needed to trade to rebuild anyway. Mantha could be a decent pickup for another Cup run. Seems like Mantha is purely a rental to use up the rest of their cap space for this year. As long as Vegas makes a deep run it should be worth it.
Edit: it’s also yet another move that makes the Jeannot trade look like a joke…
You are right. Knights have major flaws. The Knights defense turns over the puck multiple times on almost every powerplay. The last 2 games it led to 2 breakaway shorthanded goals. Almost all the defenseman are struggling with playing smart and there is not enough offense skill to compensate for all the mistakes. #27 and #23 are having many of their passes picked off by the other teams as of late leading to the other teams scoring goals.
This isn’t going to help Vegas get out of their funk. Giving up those pieces for nothing
Great trade for Washington.
Florida?!
VGK fan here, yeah not flattered by this trade. Mantha is Dubois 2.0, big, strong, but lacks the will to compete on a nightly basis. I guess for a 2nd and 4th rounder it's not terrible but he won't move the needle for Vegas. We won a cup on hard work, grit, etc and I don't see Mantha ever assimilating to that type of environment. He'll be a rental, don't expect him to be here next year.
Good pickup for Vegas with Mantha set to be a ufa. He has a much better effort when he's looking to cash in.
I see malkin will be traded for younger centers.
Washington has 14 out of the remaining 22 games against playoff teams. With a -33 goal difference, it’s going to be an uphill struggle. They’re doing the right thing.
My deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to Mantha and his family at this difficult time.
Why do other clubs help Vegas, that is yet again using the LTIR loophole ? Stone's 9.5 mil helps quite a bit when making these arrangements, yet in the 1st round he will be playing at a point-per-game rate 😂…hated this when Tampa did this with Kuch, now it's every year occurrence with Stone. Maybe other clubs are happy that Vegas always wins or smth 😮…
Despite caps being in the “mix” of playoff hunt, they know they need to sell and gain assets for the future. The caps are going to be back up in a few years, especially when that Ryan Leonard guy comes up (he looks like he could be the real deal). Bright future for the caps, which I’m sure ppl won’t be happy about lol
People still think its circumventing as the Knights just slipped into 4th place and might not even make the playoffs. Why rest Stone for the playoffs right in the middle of being in danger of missing the playoffs?
I'm torn on the idea of being able to retain salary on 1/4 season of a contract. You start the year a half million under the cap, it's possible to get 20 games plus the playoffs of a $8 million guy. I wouldn't mind a rule where you can't retain salary on an expiring contract after Dec 31st.
On the one hand this would hurt teams in a rebuild mode a little bit, but really only the ones who harbor playoff hopes til late in the season.
The other thing it would do is lengthen contending windows. Think of all the 1st round picks that Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Washington gave up over the years on rentals. Some of those picks are stars in their late 20s now.
I like the deal. Excited to see what Mantha can do . Dudes a fuckin beast. 6’5” 240. Nuts . We need it right now because this is the worst I’ve ever seen this team play. And I mean ever . Only time closest was during 2 seasons ago when we missed the playoffs but think this is even worse. They’re just lazy , don’t play defense, and can’t keep the puck out of their net. It’s brutal to watch. Part of me feels like “eh fuck it we won a cup oh well”. But that being said I truly think if this team plays their game and gets healthy they can repeat. Would be so cool to see. Either way though excited to see what Mantha brings and hopefully we can bring in another piece. Starting to think we need a defensive piece. As much as I love Martinez he’s getting old and making a lot of mistakes lately. Thing is he’s a shot blocking machine. Not sure. But maybe a trade with him involved might better us. Get a younger defensemen . Not sure who though. We’ll see . Regardless been tough to watch this team lately . Been doing a lot of rewatching highlights of the cup run lately lol.
Good on Caps management for being realistic – this team is in re-tool/rebuild mode while also making SURE that Ovie gets the record in the next coupla years. I don't think their lean years will last as long as the Pens, who are in for a decade plus of pain and suffering.
Mantha is a player I really wanted to see play for the Canucks, after watching him in the World Juniors, but he never quite lived up to expectations in the NHL. He has a size that could dominate the game as a power forward, but he plays like an undersized winger. I don't know if he turns things around at 29 in Vegas, but Washington didn't seem to know what to do with him.
Go knights 🐸🐗🐰
