Avs Trade Johansen to Flyers for Walker, Trade Byram to Sabres for Mittelstadt
Welcome back all right so as promised we’re going to discuss the two count of two trades made thus far today by the Colorado Avalanche uh the ABS making a pretty major shift here and it’ll be interesting to see how this all pans out I I like the deals for Colorado thus the
Avalanche Jersey so Shawn Walker is now a member of the Colorado Avalanche this year for Philadelphia 63 games six goals 16 assists 22 points he’s been very effective uh 29 years of age he’s an unrestricted free agent this summer I think ABS fans will like him if he fits
In as well in Colorado as he was in Philadelphia I think he’s going to be a popular player going the other way Ryan Johansson who may never play a game for Philadelphia uh he’s been placed on waivers yeah they’ve waved him already uh 63 games 13 goals 10 assist 23 points
For Johansson it has not been a secret that the ABS have not been happy with the production from Johansson uh he has a $4 million cap hit until next year and uh I’m I’m sure PR’s fans watching this are going to say well yeah we tried to
Say that when he went to Colorado so Johansson goes in that trade and just seeing that on its own I thought Colorado has to have something else going on they’re not just going to trade away a forward to bring in a defenseman right yeah they they they actually made
A pretty major deal as well with Buffalo and that bow and Byrum has gone to Buffalo I’m surprised by this because I still think bym has a ton of potential I think that this year’s been a down year for him 55 games eight goals 12 assists
20 points lately he’s been better uh his stats were trending in the right direction over last month so I think Buffalo did all right here uh number four pick in 2019 now you’ve got power you’ve got Dalene and you’ve got Byrum Byrum’s cap hits $3.85 million he’s a
Restricted free agent next year so they have another year of that certainty that he makes $3.85 million it’s not too bad now going to Colorado Casey midad middlest stads in the midst of another very good season last year and this year he’s really taken that next step he’s 25
Years of age 62 Gam games 14 goals 33 assists 47 points I would expect those points totals to go up in Colorado mildly um he was a number eight pick in 2017 he was written off as a bust a few years ago but by some but he is really
Developed he has been one of Buffalo’s best forwards he’s a restricted free agent this summer so we’ll see how long it takes for the ABS to work out an extension with him uh but I I do think middle stat is a pretty solid addition up front and SO trading out Johansson
And trading in middlest stad trading out Byam trading in Shawn Walker you’re getting a little bit more of a veteran on the blue line a different look than you’re going to get with Byrum and with middle stad you’re getting a younger forward who’s scoring more already than
Johansson was this season and I think definitely has more upside at this point in his career than Johansson I don’t think anybody’s going to argue the other direction on that uh so yeah these are a couple of smart moves made by the ABS let me know your thoughts in the
Comments section below as always don’t forget to hit like And subscribe in the event you have not done so already and hey thank you guys so much for watching uh we’ll see if there’s any trades left to be made on Friday or if they just close up shop and say forget it
Everybody’s already traded uh lots of rumors of other guys on the move so this is probably not my last trade video for today so stay tuned and I will talk to you again soon enough
We will see if the details on the Johansen deal change, have just seen it as a straight one for one so far.

The remainder of the season and playoffs are gonna get very interesting.
The Oilers, Stars, Avalanche, Jets, Golden Knights and Canucks have all made trades to get better.
Ha! THG, I just made you interrupt yourself. Was nearing the end of the Tarasenko etc. trade video but needed to skip ahead for your take on what the Avs are doing.
Hey look at the Avs do some hockey trades again. Bo gets to be reunited with EJ and Buffalo. As an Avs fan hate to see another young d getting delt at the deadline, but this should hopefully fix 2c for a few years.
The fact that the Avs addressed the issues they had AND gained cap space is fantastic. Love Byram but he just hasn’t taken that massive step I think Avs wanted from him. He should be on the top pairing and not the 2nd or 3rd he’s been on in Colorado. Expect the Avs are not done
it's sad to lose Byram, but Toews and Makar are locked up for years, same with Manson and Girard, so the Avs are pretty ok defensively and if the can extended Mittelstadt for 3 to 5 years, they'll have quite a decent 2C
can someone explain to me why philly would trade their guy 1to1 for a player they immediately wave? im I missing a part of this trade or did philly really just donate a player to colorado?
I like the trade for the Sabres. Too many forward prospects that have to come up like Savoie or Kulich. Needed a solid defenseman like Byram
Briere doing a good job
Byram for Middlstadt – finally a hockey trade!
could someone explain to me how are the flyers benefitting from that deal?
Any gamblers out there, it is time to put your money on the Avs to win the Stanley Cup. Every time Buffalo trades someone they win the Cup or get to the finals immediately (Bogosian, Eichel, O'Reilly, Reinhart, etc.). It is Mittelstadt's turn…
Good work Philly and Colorado. For Buffalo it's a bit sus but I guess they didnt want to keep Mittelstadt so they had to take a chance on a different young player.
Casey will love playing for the Avs. He a very good player finding his stride. Buffalo is loaded with centers that are waiting for their chance in the NHL. The Sabres are thin at d, this is a trade that will help both clubs.
Buffalo gonna end up with the Leafs/ Sens problem where they dont have any good right handed D men
Did the Sabres not learn from the Sens getting Chychrun Sabres and Sens shojld just work together to try and get out of their respective dumpsters
If Byram can stay healthy, he’s gonna be a lot of fun next to Dahlin
Woah that sabres trade is crazy
Impressive moves imo
As an Avs fan, Buffalo got a solid deal for byram. I’m glad he’ll get to be back with Eric Johnson. Seems like those two had great chemistry the year the Avs won the cup. I think a ton of Bo’s growth as a player can be attributed to Johnson.
Sorry to see Byram go. I liked that kid. He needs to bulk up though. Especially in to play in the east.
I’m happy for Casey! He’s been in Buffalo a while now, so it might be hard for him to leave. He grew up in the Eden Prairie school district here in the Twin Cities. He absolutely dominated on his HS team and they won the state tourney. He has 2 younger brothers on the way up, one is a star with the U of M gophers now. I’d love to see them all succeed in the NHL. I can’t wait to watch his 1st game with the Avs!
im kind of mixed on the trade with buffalo. bo has the potential to be a top pairing guy, it sucks to lose him. but mittelstadt is basically exactly what the avs need, which is a solid 2c. plus he is an rfa which is nice. not sure if walker is gonna be anything more than a rental.
ryjo seems like a solid guy but the performance on the ice just wasn't there. the avs are right in the middle of their cup window, they cant afford to have a 4m guy who inst pulling his weight. I think if the flyers retain another 50% on him they can probably get something back for it. he is still solid on the draw and can potentially pot 20 goals 40 points which isn't nothing.
The trade for Byram does not impress me at all. Plus, we still have Olafsson and Okposo. Sigh, we still suck.
Wow, I’m kinda dumbfounded by this. It makes a lot of sense but man is it hard to see Byram go
Avs fan, first off I really love your channel, its a daily watch during the season! I'm sad to see Byram go, but happy overall with the trade since I was never happy with RJ from the beginning, even with the hot start he had. We get more physical on the blue line and add secondary scoring, win win!
You forgot mention the #1 pick the Flyers get in 2025.
Adding Byram to the Sabres Blueline sounds like a good idea, until you realize there is no room for him there…yet. Stay tuned Sabres fans.
Not unexpected, but sad to see Byram go. An extension soon would be great as Byram for a rental would be catastrophic levels of bad
learned about the Mittelstadt trade on buffalo radio talk show. People here are already congratulating Mittelstadt on the conn smythe trophy.
You really had me going with Johansen to the Flyers as Torts is the person who forced out Johansen out of Columbus. Then I opened the video and saw he was waived and ahh that makes sense.
Ryan Johansen traded from CBJ to Preds in 2016 two months after Torts became coach there. Not surprised he is on waivers in Philly.
I like Mittelstadt first Avs! His game has matured a lot in Buffalo..really one the guy who has immeasurably improved 200 foot game under Coach Granato. All the best, Casey! ✅
Byram traded to the Sabres is surprising BOTH ways. Why would the Sabre add another top 4 left defenceman when they already have Power and Dahlin? I'm surprised that the Avs also gave up on Byram that fast but I think the guy has attitude problems and I think the effort is not always there. Puzzling trade for sure.
Avs needed a 2C much more than a 3D, simple as that.
THG — the frustration I am going thru right now waiting for the Devils to trade for a goalie is maddening. I don't think it will matter for a second this season, but come on! This goalie issue has been going on a lot longer than just this season — everyone has forgotten already the team used seven of them two seasons ago — and I just need something to believe it will get better. That it is taking this damn long … incomprehensible. Thank you for letting me vent and for all you do. No one does it better — absolutely no one.
Danny B is on fire!
Flyers got a 2026 1st and the Avs got a 2026 5th in the trade as well.
When Byram was drafted he was given more hype than Makar, if I remember correctly. I know he's been slowed by injuries, but he's just at the age when defensemen start getting really good. For instance, he's a year younger than Dobson and compare Dobson this year to Dobson last year. So could be a great pick up for Buffalo if he can stay healthy.
The Avs should be better now.
Byram a power d guy..but did he not have concussion history already..
Avs 0:00
Had to come right to the Hockey Guy for the analysis
Buffalo wins…nice forward-looking maneuver
Byram is definitely a promising young player, but we had a logjam on the left side of our defense. One of Toews, Girard, or Byram had to play on the bottom pair, which is kind of a waste of potential for any of them.
I think the contract certainty of Girard won out over Byram in the end. G is signed at a fair deal long term, and Byram was coming up as an RFA soon. I'm glad we were able to get good value in a hockey trade for Byram.
I wish Byram all the best of luck in the rest of his career, and I will continue to cheer for him wherever he goes. Too bad he couldn't stay but it was the correct call IMO.
Mittelstadt will be missed in Buffalo, but he showed promise as a #2 forward and we all ready had one in Dylan Cozens. He probably couldn't have gone to a better team and I wish him all the best. I know nothing about Byram, so it will be interesting to see what he can do for us.
