Mike Milbury selects a lineup of goons to go after Ulf Samuelsson

In game 3 of the 1991 Wales Conference Finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins, Ulf Samuelsson delivers a knee-seeking hit on Cam Neely. Neely was forced to leave the game. Seeking revenge, Mike Milbury responds by putting forth his most physical lineup for game 4, in order to counter the Penguins tactics. Allen Pedersen, Bob Beers, Lyndon Byers, and Nevin Markwart are inserted into the lineup, despite only tallying 7 goals between them, in addition to regular pugilist Chris Nilan.

  1. I miss these days as well as the classic divisions names: Patrick, Adams, etc. Why did Bettman have to fuck it up? Why did he change the home whites to the home darks? I hate when people re-invent the wheel.

  2. so in a close series against one of the best O teams of all time..you " goon it up"…
yup..seems to me he was just looking for any answer to save face..crying about dirty hits
always plays with the local media…when you are clearly over matched..you need an excuse..
and to this day..the bruins will always cry and moan about a bruise above the knee….
and fail to mention the coach..who inserted the word players he had..in the playoffs!!
someone tell MM the payback is done in the reg season…

  3. Crybabies .. if Neely woudn't have chickened out and instead take the hit .. he would not have been injured at all .. maybe got the wind knocked out of him but no more. Ulf was headed for the body as you can clearly see ..

  4. This dirty hit ended a great career prematurely. Neely returned few years later and averaged a goal a game one year, but couldn’t play back to backs, and had to retire. Imagine this happened to your beloved MARIO.

  5. Al Pederson, not a fighter. Bob Beers, not a fighter. Nevin Markwart, he would fight but certainly not a heavyweight. Lyndon Byers was the only legit heavyweight so to call this a lineup of goons is just false.

  6. Did Milbury ever think he should have worried about scoring in the next game instead of putting goons in the lineup.

  7. Going into the game the Bruins were up 2-0 having won the first two in Boston. Not having Neely at 100% def hurt but the big loss was Dave Poulin completely shutting down Mario. Needless to say Milbury's line up didn't work and Pittsburgh won the series and won the Cup.

  8. One of the most overblown hits in history. It was neutral zone, on a fast break. Speed is a factor in the decision making, or lack thereof. Ulf goes for the body, and Neely tries to ditch the puck and evade. Both natural. Ulf, as you can clearly see, when he begins to realize he is missing his check, steers is body more toward Cam for a flush impact. SURE he should have, or could have, brought his leg in a bit. Yet Neely should know better and not try to squeek his 200 plus frame out of the trolley tracks so quickly. He lest his own leg in the lurch. Both at fault. Neely was one of my fave's, and I patterned my game after his and others when I was playing, yet he was made of glass, and hurt often. One of those guys. Ulf was a tank, and I was always more upset at his work on Lemieux than I was on Neely.
