I just had a thought that came into my head regarding our current situation around the deadline and Barclay Goodrow. My proposal would be, 2024 1st, Zac Jones, (1 of Sykora, Berard, or Edstrom) and Barclay Goodrow at 50% retained, for Alex Wennberg and Jordan Eberle both 50% retained. Hear me out, buying out Barclay Goodrow would leave us paying around 1.6M for the next SIX years…. Retaining him in a trade by 50% leaves us paying 1.6M for the next 3 years which is a much more manageable cap hit for both sides. The only reason Goodrow pops into my head as a small possibility for Seattle is his prior relationship with Yanni Gourde and his leadership abilities that could be great appreciated on a younger team like Seattle. What are your thoughts?

I’m curious if we’ve even asked Goodrow for his 15-team NTC list. The Canadian teams are typically an auto-include but I’ve honestly got no idea if he would prioritize blocking the bad teams or high tax states.
As for the trade itself, it’d obviously be pretty great for us. Maybe a slight overpay if we’re fully retaining on Goodrow. Only thing that would make me hesitant would be Berard as the prospect. He’s a lot closer in potential to Othmann than people give him credit for (including me, until I really took a look at his play in HFD). He’s been producing at a really solid clip at 5v5 especially; Othmann’s done a lot of his damage on the PP.
It also seems like Seattle wants to hold on to Eberle, which sucks because I think he’s our best rental option for 1RW.
The real buyout numbers for Goodrow are the following year 1 gain 247,222 of cap space. Year 2 through 6 are all penalties 2 is 1,002,78, year 3 is the tough year at 3,502,778, years 4-6 are all 1,111,111.
Year 3 is 26-27 and at the end of of the 25-26 season Trouba/Panarins 20m is off the books. They may be resigned but at cheaper so its not as terrible.
Paying half of Goodrow’s salary and paying for another capable 4C is basically the same thing as paying Goodrow’s full salary. Goodrow at 1.8M x 3 would be a positive asset for most teams. With that in mind, that deal would be giving the Kraken a *haul* for two 3rd line rentals.
Wennberg and Eberle can probably be had for 2 2nds, probably with another pick or prospect if we need them to retain some salary. Chytil and Wheeler being on LTIR means that we probably won’t need 50% on both though (unless we have other moves to make). Wennberg and Eberle are quality 3rd liners but would be our budget options.
if we get rid of Jones who is out backup D-man? Need 1 with some experience for playoffs no?
like it or not, Goodrow is not going anywhere. *MAYBE* he goes in the offseason but at this point i think even that is a stretch.
More to the point, all signs point to SEA wanting to keep Eberle. if SEA was also willing to trade Eberle, dont you think they would have held him out of practice the same way they did Wennberg?
